Because the Peabody Institute Library was a separate institution from the City of Peabody the Library was required to publish an annual report. The report, usually, included the names of the Trustees; names and titles of library staff; a letter from the Library Director; statistics from the previous year and the operating budget of the Library.

This annual report includes Mrs. Eliza Sutton's donation of $20,000 for the Eben Dale Sutton Reference Room and George Peabody's letter saying he is for this.

This report is the 15th annual report for the year 1867.
