A failed, alcoholic writer tries desperately to save his son, wrongly sentenced to hang for murder. Leo McKern channels his inner Rod Steiger as a thuggish tycoon and Michael Redgrave is a jittery, gin soaked wreck in this uncharacteristically histrionic British whodunit, which was directed by blacklisted American expatriate Joseph Losey. Lois Maxwell (aka Miss Moneypenney from the later Bond films) has a small part.
