This aircheck of WCGY-FM 93.7 licensed to Lawrence, Massachusetts served the northern Boston Radio Market.
Recorded Friday, May 1, 1981 (7:59pm-9:22pm) off air onto 2 sides of a cassette tape with a brief gap between the tape side change. This is a historical snapshot of radio, music, local commercials and short bits from broadcast personality Dan Justin.
To my amateur ear, WCGY seems searching for it's identity. There is an odd mix of ballads, disco, classic rock, Motown and current songs all mixed together. Dan Justin has minimal time to chatter, many times just brief intros & outtros spoken over songs. There are no liners or jingles IDing the station, even though Dan does say "FM 94, Playing the Greatest Hits" a few times.
It's not that the songs were bad, but to me, they just seemed to not fit together. For instance, maybe just coincidentally, the first full song and final song of this aircheck are both Carpenter songs, played within 75 minutes of each other on-air, seems to me a bit odd. Each stretch of music is then followed by a long string of commercials and promos before repeating the process over again.
In the end I actually found the local commercials and especially the Nightclub report to be more interesting than the music mix.
The aircheck starts off with a few seconds of searching the radio dial before settling into 93.7 FM, the first voice heard are the brief parting words of the previous personality Chris O'Neil.
I do not own the copyright on this material but present this historic audio exhibit as a living museum piece for everyone to enjoy.
