Dialogue(s): theaetetus Stephanus Pages: 151d-160a
Tape begins with a discussion about three levels of problems in Philosophical Midwifery and Pierre explains that Theaetetus' problem is a Supra-problem - a higher problem for which the origin can be known.
Rather than read the section given as homework last time, they read from 151d to 160 (which begins at 21 minutes in).
Goal of the session is to see what it takes to bring enough material to the surface to say that ..“a child of your soul has been delivered” (PG).
Socrates' questioning takes Theaetetus through the history of his general belief that perception is knowledge and also expands the exploration to elevate the principle by bringing in religion and widening the scope. However, Theaetetus is led to see that his theory is defective, does not include all cases and ends up with nothing ever being the same from one minute to the next and he is left to wonder at the conclusion that he and only he perceives something and that nothing exists unless it is perceiving.
(Next time's reading will be from 160-172)
