Synopsis
Another fun Wednesday afternoon with Pierre and the gang. Topic highlights are below. Two or three mid-wifings and an attempt at reading part of Thomas Taylor's Book 7, Chapter 40, thanks to Barbara's search for today's discussion.
Topic Highlights and Questions from Pierre
- Eric's has shared a 3-page paper he has written about some insights he has had into PMW, regarding the place of ‘terror’ and ‘anger’ in PMW. The video starts with his discussion with Pierre, since they started before 2pm and I was not there yet. This leads into a PMW with PG and Eric.
- PMW with Rob
- Barbara' s question clarifying the anagogic process discussed last time, and Xenophanes, seeing, and the Whole of Wholes, a State of Wonder (with Bradley)
- Parmenides 1st hypothesis (with Bradley). 100 interchanges. Close to 1/3 deal with the word, Self, in many cases, coming as a conclusion to an argument. How many? Then take each of those conclusions and bring them into a unity and tell PG about the nature of the Self
- Barbara and clarification on the anagogic practice referred to last time
- How does the 1st hypothesis begin? Which line? I must begin with my self..
- All the other hypotheses (2-9) with other ideas of the Self or One end up in contradictions. The 1st hypothesis (the One-Self) does not.
- Pierre's question to us: How does the daemon relate to the Self?
- Book 7, Ch 40, p 598, in TOP(*) which Barbara had found: “In like manner every amatory order is the cause to all things of conversion to divine beauty, leading back, conjoining, and establishing all secondary natures in the beautiful, replenishing them from thence, and irradiating all things with the gifts of its light.”
- JeffS's problem with this sentence
- Pierre suggests that JeffS work with Proclus’ Elements of Theology first, and specifically, Juan Balboa's translation, which includes crucial additional notes relating to the Parmenides not in the Dodds or other translations
- Regina and Pierre on what “all” means as used in the amatory sentence above
- Eric will re-write his paper after today' s talk with PG
- Rob and Pierre about suffering and pain and the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism
- DonB asks Pierre about the triads (Book 7, Ch 22) and the soul
