Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session. Today we read
Today we discuss whether Philosophical Midwifery (PMW) can reach the same heights as any religion – or higher. We focus on Buddhism. At the end, Bradley explores a dream with Pierre which deals precisely with this subject. Synchronicity, baby.
Pierre asks folks if they have an idea for what to talk about today. He picks David.
David suggests topic: An explanation of the dynamics, metaphysics, and philosophy of midwifery. And what is most akin to the Self and the soul?
JulieH: How do we discern our own being, as Proclus recommends in his Commentary on the Alcibiades?
JeffL: Reads from 517e in Book 7 of the Republic. What does it mean? What is the effect of the guy who came out of the Brilliant Light of Being, and comes back into the Cave?
Midwifery is only trying to convince someone that from their own experience, what they have taken to be Enlightenment is actually ignorance. And they don’t know it.
What does that mean? That the process of Enlightenment is the same as the process of PMW (Philosophical Midwifery).
Only, in PMW, we are looking for the false image of reality, that the person has assumed is true, without ever once questioning it.
What is the difference between the spiritual life and the life of midwifery?
What issue is important in metaphysics?
Then how can you see something similar (to your answer) in PMW?
What is it like coming to a meaningful conclusion in both realms: PMW and a pure spiritual path?
How are they similar? Different?
Is there something parallel to the 9 hypotheses (of Plato’s Parmenides) in PMW?
Is there a parallel to the ‘causes’ in PMW?
Can we compare what Plato and Proclus are doing, to PMW?
David: How ‘pregnant’ do you have to be to engage in various spiritual practices, or in PMW?
Is the idea of ‘ignorance’ the same in Plato/PMW and Buddhism, or different?
Accomplishing the same thing in PMW as with Buddhism, but without all the complexity/ritual
Comparing PMW talks with the ideals of Buddhism (enlightenment experiences)
Regina: PMW superior to her kensho
There may be higher states in Buddhism that cannot have parallels in PMW, or there may not be. Which?
Can we compare the stages of enlightenment detailed in the famous Ox-herding pictures (found in Roshi Philip Kapleau’s work, Three Pillars of Zen) to PMW?
What if you went to a zendo and asked the roshi: What do you see? I’d like to have you judge me. Because I don’t know if we’re the same or different and I need your help. What would they say?
Dream exploration with Bradley (starting around 4:33pm)
Bradley’s Dream – Fri 11 Sept 2020
I was in front of front of thousands of Indian people and I was to give a talk.
I walked out, and instead of not facing them I turned around quickly and I did.
And then I started asking them questions, or I opened it up, I said, “does anyone have a question?”
Very quickly some said, does it have an, “I/eye?”
I said, “if it does I don’t want to know it.”
I said, “is there anymore questions?”
And someone said, “what does it know?”
And I said, “what doesn’t it know?”
I just kept looking at everyone.
And then everyone ended up sitting down, I was talking about meditation and keeping your question, if they had one or whatever kind of meditation they were doing.
And keeping it whatever your doing.
And then it moved to….
A gentleman came forward and I was going to give a talk on Philosophical Midwifery.
