The Growler Story is a Department of Defense film from 1958. This story
highlights one of the most famous individual acts of heroism during
WWII. When fatally wounded Commander Gilmore, from the bridge of the USS
Growler, gave the final command to "take er down" which is now one of
the most famous of Naval Commands for Submarine Commanders. Gilmore
became one of the seven World War II submariners to earn the Medal of
Honor.
