This historic silent film is presented by Official Films and is from the Dudley Pictures Corporation (:10) "This World of Ours" series of educational films. Costa Rica is 23,000 square miles and its population around 1947 was about 750,000 (:36). The opening images are of houses and rolling green hills with cows grazing and laying upon them (1:11). The national flower is the orchid and is shown (1:45). The largest city and state capital is San Jose pictured at (2:03). Pedestrians mill through a busy street in the capital and it’s buildings exhibit Roman style architecture (2:25). In the tropical climate, coffee is a major crop (2:31). A woman is shown harvesting the beans (3:14) and men are depicted washing them in long watery man made canals. The beans are then dried in the sun (3:39). Another major crop is the banana (4:22) and a field of them is watered (4:36). Large clusters are lifted from a truck and then washed (4:53). They are then tossed into ships for transport (5:27). Another export is sugar (6:01) and it is pictured in fields (6:07). Strong rope is created from abaca fibre also known as manila hemp (7:04). Painted oxcarts are the pride of many farmers (7:48) and one is shown carefully painting his cart (8:09). Men drive down the road leading to the Irazu Volcano (9:25) and walk to the rim overlooking the crater. A fiesta is depicted in the streets with instruments and dancing (10:05). Bull fights are shown next (10:55) with a massive crowd encircling one bull. The men dance and weave in and out of the bull's violent path just before the film snaps to conclusion (11:44).
