Spectacular Scenes of Air Tragedy 1932 (:57-2:49). May 11, 1932, live footage is shown of the USS Akron. Three sailors hang on as the airship updrafts. Two fall to their deaths on film and the third is rescued (not shown). [This airship kills 73 when it is destroyed in a thunderstorm April, 1933.] News From Overseas 1927 (2:51-3:46). Paul von Hindenburg, President of Germany 1925-1934, stands on a balcony and then greets soldiers. A group of German perform a dance. He lays the cornerstone for Oldenburg Sports Park for youth. Notre-Dame de Paris 1927 (3:47-4:50). Following the damage of WWI, the famous Cathedral is reconstructed. The beautiful stained-glass windows are admired. Crowds flock for its first service after restoration. Personalities (4:51-6:29) 1927, Jim McKeen, known as Snookums in the movies, visits President Coolidge and Senator Smoot. Mrs. Coolidge hosts a group of children at a circus (4:51). Polish actress Pola Negri marries Serge Mdivani (5:34). 1929, British Premier Ramsay MacDonald and his daughter arrive in New York and is shown with Mayor James J Walker (5:50). “Old Ironsides” Home for Face-Lifting 1927 (6:29-7:05) The USS Constitution arrives for dry dock reconditioning. Secretary of the Navy Curtis Wilbur officiates at the ceremony. Aviation 1929 (7:07-8:07) The Navy proves mass parachute jumping on Navy Day, shown by multiple men entering a tri-motor Ford transport plane and floating down. Floods Ravage Louisiana 1927 (8:09-9:12) Parts of Louisiana are flooded as rising water breaks levees and restraining walls. Shown are stranded horses and people on the rise of a levee, boat rescues, and cowboys drive horses and cattle through rising water. Fashions of the Day 1929 (9:14-10:07) Many hair models show off cropped bobs with finger waves and pin curls wear a variety of 1920s dresses at a Chicago Hairdressers of America convention. Highlighted are the Clara Bow influenced cut and a hairdo with long tresses in ringlets. Sports 1929 (10:08-12:40 ) 18-year old golfer Helen Higgs tees off and finishes a putt to win a Women’s Derby and receive the cup trophy. Different 1920s hats are shown on women (10:08). Harrison “Jimmie” Johnston, is welcomed home to a parade in Minnesota after winning the U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach Golf Links (11:04). Tommy Hitchcock Jr. leads his polo team to victory (11:58). Whichone is shown winning the Belmont Futurity Stakes (11:08).
