This black & white film is an episode from the short-lived TV series FLIGHT, Season 1, episode 8 entitled 'Bombs in the Belfry.' This aired in 1958 and was directed by Jean Yarbrough. It stars Dick Jones, Robert Knapp, Brett Halsey and Alan Wells, Walter Reed, Luis Alvarez and Anna Navarro. The plot revolves around a young bombardier who is racked with guilt after being ordered to bomb a church in Leyte. Opening titles: two men fight. Planes in formation. "FLIGHT" (:09-1:11). Host General George C. Kenney speaks about the episode. New Guinea, pilot Dave Willis and his co-pilot Bill Bone. They meet Jerry Roe, the replacement bombardier. They sit in on a mission briefing (1:12-3:28). B-25 Mitchell takes off. In the plane's cockpit, the pilot and co-pilot discuss. As the plane flies, they encounter firepower from the ground as they approach the target. The bombardier drops bombs, explosions on the ground. Afterwards, the men look at a still picture of a bomb strike photo (3:29-5:31). The bombardier drops more bombs as missions go on. Jerry, the bombardier sits with the pilot, Dave, the two men have cigarettes and talk. The men sit in on a mission briefing. The planes are back in the sky, pilot Dave gives the orders to drop bombs to the bombardier (5:32-8:18). Jerry flips switches and gets ready to drop some bombs. The plane takes some gunfire and the bombardier doesn't drop any bombs, the pilot is concerned. The plane circles back to drop some bombs. The bombardier doesn't drop any bombs. Finally the bombardier drops bombs on a church (8:19-9:55). Plane lands. Dave talks with Jerry. Jerry is angry they were told to bomb a church. Planes back in the sky. Jerry, the bombardier does his job but seems to be angry. Another pilot enters and talks with Dave and Jerry, he makes comments about the natives and this makes Jerry angry. He starts a fight with the other pilot (9:56-12:01). Jerry speaks to a native and is told the natives always run into a church to hide. Jerry is sad and angry. Jerry has a nightmare while he sleeps (12:02-13:35). Planes in the sky. The bombardier is ready to drop bombs. Bombs fall from the sky and destroy a Japanese ship. Dave talks with Jerry who is annoyed. Mission briefing on new targets given to the men (13:36-15:42). Planes fly over a jungle. Japanese Zero fires at the men. The bombardier doesn't drop a bomb so the plane goes around again. Dave goes to talk to the bombardier, Dave drops the bombs. Plane gets back to its base (15:43-18:13). Dave and Jerry have words and then a fistfight. Dave talks with a superior about the fight and how the last few missions have been (18:14-20:17). Bombs drop from planes over their targets. Jerry has requested a transfer but Dave thinks more should be done and looked into (20:18-21:44). Sydney, Australia. Dave sits with Jerry over lunch. Dave tells Jerry that he can land near the church and they can solve whether or not they killed innocents. Plane lands (21:45-23:03). Marietta meets with the men. She presents Jerry with a cross and then tells him that only Japanese were inside the church they bombed. Jerry is pleased to know the truth (23:04-24:30). General George C. Kenney speaks about what happened as time went on with Jerry and Dave (24:31-24:52). End credits (24:53-25:57).
