Made in 1945 to promote the role of women in the war effort, "Mary Smith, American" features women working in an aircraft factory to assemble fighter, bomber and other aircraft in support of the war effort. Women are shown working as machinists, riveters, welders, and more — although most of the supervising personnel if not all, appear to be men. The film compares Smith to a pioneer woman (at the 3:00 mark) and to Betsy Ross, for her heroic actions as a war worker. The title character works at the Grumman Aircraft factory, building planes -- probably the Grumman Avenger or SBD -- for the U.S. Navy. Her fiancé was at Pearl Harbor and was killed in the Japanese attack. The film was directed by Owen Murphy.
