Originally made for showing at the Society of Experimental Test Pilots (SETP) annual convention, YOU GOTTA EXPECT LOSSES AKA BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD is a SILENT film with a simple lesson: pilots make mistakes, machines fail, and -- you've got to expect to come up short every once in a while. The film begins with footage of a WWI pilot getting into his plane, taking off, and being immediately shot down. The antics continue with Hollywood footage of World War I, with burning balloons, dog fights, shoot downs and crashing aircraft. The Hindenburg is seen exploding at the 5 minute mark, followed at 6:30 with multiple shots from WWII of aircraft crashing into carrier decks. At the 9:45 mark the scene switches to Edwards Air Force Base where a Navajo cruise missile is seen making a bellflop landing, and a Bomarc goes astray. A rocket engine failure is seen at 11:05, with spectacular results. At 11:20, a rocket test stand endures a failure. At 11:50, an F-104 Starfighter slides down the runway at Edwards and rolls over, followed at 12:19 by the B-59 Hustler with blown out tires landing on the tarmac at Edwards. A rocket test stand explosion is seen at 15:00, and at 15:43 an ejection seat test is seen. At 16:10, an aircraft is flown into a small building as part of a stunt that goes terribly wrong!
