“Space Project” is a short 1950s film from Johnson & Johnson and produced by Henry Strauss and Company. Part of the Stop Look Listen films made by Johnson & Johnson for Drug Store owners and operators to improve their business, this film focuses on the importance of managing the space and inventory of the modern drug store. The film begins with Charlie Higgins of Higgins & Son Pharmacists speaking to the camera from inside of his drug store about how Johnson & Johnson is helping him modernize his store. The film shows a montage of a variety of clock types (03:03) to represent the passage of time, then a car driving down a residential road. Viewers see tree-lined streets with homes. Cars pack a strip mall parking lot, and viewers see several store fronts, including Cooky’s Restaurant (04:14). The film shows inside a modern pharmacy drug store. Still photos show people shopping at pre-1950s drug stores and some of the products featured on the shelves. There is a shot of the pamphlets that are part of the “Stop Look Listen” campaign (05:13). Additional photos show old stockrooms; these are followed by pictures of more modern stores where merchandise is accessible to customers on “self-service” shelving (06:09). The film shows a number of products that are now sold in drug stores, including a child’s Micky Mouse food warmer, jelly-filled pacifiers, and a plastic squeeze toy shaped like a dog (07:02). There is a shot of the Johnson & Johnson “Space Project” report, which gives information on store layout, lighting, traffic movement, and space allocation. A man grabs his Johnson & Johnson briefcase and walks to the counter of a pharmacist at a drug store (08:30). A number of customers speak to the camera, asking their local pharmacist where various products are. Women shop in the cosmetics aisle of a store (09:56). Women search for products at a drugstore. The pharmacist looks through the Johnson & Johnson “Space Project” booklet (13:10). Viewers see pages from the book that show various store display layouts and how to effectively allocate space for products. The film concludes with a shot of several customers perusing the aisles of a drug store.
