How does ONCEPT work? Conventional vaccines stimulate an immune response directed against foreign proteins. Tyrosinase, a protein present on canine melanoma cells, is not usually targeted by your dog's immune system because it also is present on normal cells. • ONCEPT is produced with a human gene for tyrosinase inserted into a small ring of DNA. • Human tyrosinase is different enough from canine tyrosinase that an immune response is generated, yet is similar enough to canine tyrosinase...

Story by   André Sobocinski   Although the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps has never been overrun with the disease it has not been immune to it either. Remarkably, between 1915 and 1945, there were only two years in which Sailors and Marines were not diagnosed with filariasis. In World War II—with the swell of deployed military populations in areas endemic with filariasis—Navy physicians diagnosed some 12,040 cases. Of these, over 90 percent were Marines. The Department of Defense has about 108,000 active duty medical personnel who provide health care on the battlefield and in military hospitals and clinics across the nation. In 2021, DOD proposed reducing the number of military medical personnel by over 10,000. These reductions could make it harder for the military health system to provide quality care and could affect the cost of that care. But DOD hasn't fully or consistently assessed the potential effects—so it doesn't know for sure. We  ...

Story by   André Sobocinski It has been estimated that nearly a third of all active-duty officers in Navy Medicine today once served in the enlisted ranks. Of course, in the U.S. military today these individuals are better known as “mustangs” or “mustang officers.” Like their namesake—the free-roaming horse of the American West—mustang officers often tread a different path.
