The Mediocre Programmer? What's that? The Mediocre Programmer is a book about the journey of becoming a better programmer. But before we can become better programmers we have to pass through being mediocre programmers. Mediocre doesn't mean a bad programmer --- far from it. It means lacking skill. As beginners we start our journey full of fresh ideas of how we'll be great programmers, but as we learn more we realize that the gap between being a beginner and an expert programmer requires us to...

It's in the middle of April, just before tax time in the United States. The weather doesn't want to cooperate here at Open Metalcast headquarters, moving from sunshine and warmer temperatures to wintery-mix and chilly temperatures. But what you can rely on is some amazing Creative Commons metal music to help make life more bearable. And as Peculate to accurately points out: "April is the cruelest month". Indeed. We have an amazing assortment of metal music in this episode, featuring...

Putting together an episode of Open Metalcast can sometimes be a challenge in focus for me. Sometimes I get distracted by the music that I'm looking for (woe be the rabbit holes that occur when I'm looking for the perfect tracks). Other times I can get distracted when I'm waiting for something to finish downloading or for an episode to finish encoding. It can get frustrating having all of those distractions competing for my attention. But when a show comes together and I'm previewing the tracks...

The atomic number 189 denotes a hypothetical eka-superactinide called "Unoctennium", which sounds very similar to the fictional material called "Unobtanium". Unoctennium has not been observed in the wild yet, but should it exist it's already been named. What does this have to do with metal music? Not a damn thing, save for I'm writing up show notes for episode 189 and that was the most interesting thing that happened with the number 189 (other than some emperors and a pope...

Things have been rather erratic here at the Open Metalcast Headquarters. We've been rather lax in releasing the metal to you in a timely fashion. One could blame the holidays, but part of it was I was getting behind myself in a lot of things. But my hope in the coming year is that we'll have more metal to share with you and that metal will be prompt and piping hot when delivered directly to your earbuds. Kind of like pizza delivery, but without that awkward moment when you're tipping the...

This episode was going to be completely different. I'd selected a few tracks here and there, but upon hearing the latest Oak Pantheon / Amiensus split the show pretty much demanded a different course. What came together for the show surprised me and I hope it surprises you too. Never let it be said that sometimes things have a way of their own and the best we can do is get out of the way and let them take their final form. Part of the fun in recording a podcast is trying to get everything done in one take without making mistakes. Sometimes that just happens, where I start to say a name of a band and then sound like I have marbles in my mouth. Other times there will be "technical difficulties" like having a cat decide that she needs to be up on the desk at the same time. But we never let these issues stand between you and the amazing Creative Commons Metal Music that awaits your ears. We have music from...

Here at Open Metalcast Headquarters we're nearing the end of summer and heading headlong into the most metal of seasons: Fall. Now you may say that Winter is the most metal of seasons, but I'd beg to differ with you. And because I'm doing the writing I get to say that it's Fall and there's very little you can do to dissuade me from this notion. What makes this season so metal? One of the things that I really like about metal music is the variety of music in the genre. Sure there are purists out there who imprint on one record and expect everything else to sound like that one record, but there's a whole wide world of metal out there waiting to be explored. From the chromatic scales of the Middle-East to saxophones, keyboards, and folk instruments there's a broad range of things that metal will mix with (and mix well). This episode celebrates the wide world of metal...

Over the lifespan of digital music there has been a constant desire to control the copying of the data. Various watermarking and copy-protection schemes were put in place to ensure that folks wouldn't share music. But no matter how protected the data there was always a weak link between the digital realm and the realm where you could listen to music. That was referred to as the analog hole; the moment when the digital signals become sound waves that your ears and brain perceive as music....

Welcome to the 150th episode of Open Metalcast, where we've been exploring the world of Creative Commons Metal Music for lo these many episodes. I'm sure there's a way to check to see how many songs and bands we've uncovered together but frankly I'd rather concentrate on bringing you the best in Creative Commons Metal Music. And this episode delivers on that promise with music from Dismalfucker, Dancerobot, Mortals Path, Cuerno, Cerderben, Vukodlak, Constrictor, and netra. There's something for...

Welcome friends to the 149th episode of the podcast we humbly call "Open Metalcast". In this chapter our hero discovers that the old man in the tavern was indeed a sorcerer who sent him in search of the best in Creative Commons Music. He scoured the internet and discovered eight new tracks, which he stuffed into his knapsack and dragged back into town. Feast your eyes upon such treasures by the likes of Human Ashtray, Maleek, BloodeviL, Tinnitia, Sunvoid, Lacrima, Death of a Poet, and...

According to Wikipedia (who is never wrong) Dunbar's Number is a suggested cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships. Dunbar put that number at 148, which is usually rounded to 150. Whether that's true or not is not ours to debate here, for our purpose is to provide you with the finest Creative Commons Metal the Internet has to offer. And we have nine bands we love in this episode, including Skinlepsy, a return of Narada, Mycelia, the latest...

It's mid-wintertime here at Open Metalcast Headquarters. Part of the fun of winter is the snow that inevitably shows up during this time. One of the ways to counteract the snow in this climate is to put down prodigious amounts of salt on the roads. The salt is pretty corrosive and gets everywhere. So, what does this have to do with Creative Commons-licensed metal music? Consider this show an assault in the making that will scatter metal music in your ears (See what I did there?) We have a great...

Ever have one of those moments when you don't know when to jump into a conversation? Where the time to speak doesn't happen for a while? That's what happened with this episode. Normally I jump in after the first few tracks but it didn't seem right. And really, where would you interrupt such a great line-up of music from Dantalion, Feral, Abriosis, Totem Skin, Anopheli, and Sedulity? I don't know the answer to that, but I do know this show is ready and waiting for your podcatching software of...

First off, congratulations on making it to 2017. :) We decided for this episode to just shut up and announce the song titles at the end of the show. That way we can let the music speak for itself. So you'll hear some great music from Wasted Heroes, Digger, Muldjord, Stellarvore, Zombie Destrüktion, Nimrud, Black Autumn, and Pressor. Definitely check this out and kick off 2017 with some of the best Creative Commons metal the net has to offer. (00:25) Living For The Moment by Wasted Heroes from...

It doesn't feel like the end of 2016 is upon us. It also doesn't feel like this should be the last regular episode of 2016. Yet, here we are.. But we're going out with style, with brand new music from Dejadeath, Agónica, and Minenwerfer. We also have tracks from Ishmael, Silent Path, Last Dive, Dehumanizing Process, and an ear-worm from Martes Mártir. And while we bid a farewell to 2016 we'll be back first-thing in the new year with more Creative Commons Metal Music to blast your ear-holes...

If you're even remotely aware of a country called the United States of America you'll no-doubt know that November 8th is our election day. We've had a barrage of campaign calls from celebrities who likely would never call me otherwise (Seriously, lose my phone number). We've also had non-stop election coverage in every medium known to man (I think they're even using the Rosetta stone to craft messages for any voters who might only read hieroglyphs). This week I got a strange note from one of my friends who wondered if I was moving in. Apparently on my recent order of CDs from Hypnotic Dirge Records I accidentally left it on the last shipping address I used. That address was his address from when I last sent him some CDs for Christmas. I had a few moments of confusion until I realized what was going on. But it all worked out because these were albums that I know he'd like anyway, so in a way it was an unintended act of human kindness. So...

One of the best parts of doing a podcast about Creative Commons Metal Music is I'm only answerable to you, the fans. I don't have to try to fit my show into pre-constrained time limits, and I don't have to fit the songs around commercials. And because it isn't over the air I don't have to make ham-fisted attempts at bleeping things out that might offend sensitive ears. It's just you and me sharing music the way music should be shared; among people who care about the music and the bands who make...

One thing that I didn't miss while Open Metalcast was on hiatus was writing the short blurb that precedes the listing of tracks in the show notes. This week I'll be seeing Rush in concert for their 40th anniversary tour. One of the reasons Rush is one of my favorite bands is they bucked the trends. On the album 2112 they released the now legendary concept track "2112" which clocked in at over 20 minutes. This was despite their label stating they didn't want any more concept songs. Despite this the album is now regarded as a cultural treaure in Canada and the band is still going strong 40 years later. So much for listening to the...

Welcome friends to the eleventy-first episode of Open Metalcast, a rather respectable episode number for a podcast. We also managed to get a respectable amount of snow outside the Open Metalcast headquarters, which unfortunately meant a lot of shoveling because SOMEONE never decided to pick up a snow blower for such occasions. Apparently he was too busy picking out great Creative Metal music for this episode including tracks from Savagery, Afterwind, Osmium Guillotine, Archonaut, Æons Collide,...

We're back from a brief hiatus to make you grateful you still have hearing, still have electricity, and still have enough bandwidth to download over 40 minutes of the best Creative Commons licensed metal music the world has to offer. We have such amazing bands as Nucleus, the latest from Gabezia, Day40, an upcoming release from TORT, Fitcage, SIYLIT, as well as the very latest and long anticipated albums from Oyabun and Snake Thursday. And just in case that wasn't enough we have crazy shit from...

If you're anything like us at the Open Metalcast Headquarters you've had it up to your eyeballs with the shitty covers that pass for Christmas music. Instead we present 10 of the finest Creative Commons Metal tracks from across the globe, including Argentina, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, and The United Kingdom. We have music by Los Buscadores del Movimiento Perpetuo, Die Leere im Kern deiner Hoffnung, Wolfshead, Omainen, Exelerate, ASZL, Si Non Sedes Is, Trysth,...

This week not only marked the 10th anniversary of Dimebag Darerel's death (which seems like it was only yesterday) but also the passing of one of the legends of video games: Ralph Baer. Were it not for the innovations of both Dimebag and Ralph Baer the world would never have known the amazing music of Pantera, and the video game industry as we know it might never have happened. What does this have to do with the show? Not a damn thing but as someone who grew up on games and metal it felt...

It's the week after Thanksgiving here at OMC headquarters and we couldn't be happier to have yet-another-holiday in the rear-view mirror. Not that we didn't have fun with Thanksgiving, but the lead-up to getting things sorted meant this episode is dropping one week later than it should be. And if you're anything like us you're still recovering from day n+1 of leftovers. But never fear freedom-loving metalheads, because we've lined up some music to help ween you back from your turkey-induced...

It's no secret I find writing the introductions to these episodes the hardest part of creating the episode. The music has never been a problem as evidenced by the 8 tracks featured in the show. Nope, the worst part is trying to come up with something witty and wonderful to tempt you, the reader, into downloading this episode (which you very well should as there's 30 minutes of great Creative Commons Metal Music waiting for you at that handy little download link. And I've mentioned one of my...

Ever felt like you can't make a decision about something? That happened to me recently when trying to put together this show. It seems October is the month where a lot of bands release their music so I had over 20 tracks set up to play in this show. I couldn't decide which ones to put into the final show so I made some tough choices and bumped some tracks to future episodes. But talk about being spoiled for choice! There's new music from show-favorites Memest, along with new music from Delyria,...
