Allen Thomas is a Decatur Ga. based artist who is the originator of Ratchedelic Hip Hop.  He's funky, profound, edgy, vulnerable, fun and always writing and recording new music.  This is the beginning of his set at The Space Cabbage Social Club-Cinco de Mayo Edition at Aisle 5 on 5-5-16.

The Space Cabbage Social Club, Winter Meltdown Edition was a show full of surprises.  The idea wasn't about bringing bands to the stage, but bringing together musicians and singers who come from different styles of music and match them up to create something new and different.  So Punk singers worked with Jam Band musicians, and R&B artists sang with Metal acts.  One of the best combinations of the night was when Carmen Meadows from the Punk/Metal band Sound Detour sang the song Boy From...

So you've seen Dark Star Orchestra.  Maybe your town has it's own local Dead cover band.  But for the last year, Atlanta has been lucky enough to have Dead Affect.  Last winter they drew an audience of 10 at local clubs. Now, people from all around the Atlanta are heading out to see this great band.  Here is their set, plus a rain delay, at the first annual Wingstock in Marieta, Ga.  Did I mention this was their first time playing El Paso?

It can be a little odd to talk to band members who are so nice, friendly and kind, only to hear them play music that is so aggressive, angry and intense.  After Me, The Flood is not only a metal band, but they take the listener on a journey.  With their melody and tempo changes, other worldly sound effects, and Taylor Whiddon's amazing vocal's, After Me, The Flood takes you through a variety of musical landscapes.  The Leo Luau was extremely luck to have this band on it's stage Saturday...

Howling Star has been playing together for over four years now.  Now, in August of 2016, they have brought back their original bass player, Wolf, and brought in a new drummer.  They did a great set at the Leo Luau on August 20th, 2016, at the Arts Exchange in Atlanta.  This is their four song show with their new line up.  You can then judge if they are one of Atlanta's best punk acts today.

Escape Vehicle made their return to Tin Roof Cantina on April 22nd.  Their set that night contained a combination of classic covers and some smooth originals.  But the surprise came at the end of set one with their tribute to Prince who had died two days earlier.  This video is their complete first set.  So sit back, open a cold one, and enjoy one of Atlanta's true originals.

The Difference Machine held their record release party for their second LP at Club 529 in Atlanta on June 24th 2016.  It was an amazing night of music even before they took the stage just after midnight.  Their music is not easy to define. Industrial Hip Hop?  Psychedelic Hip Hop?  It's intense, in your face, undefinable, raw energy that not many acts are even thinking about playing.  But they somehow do it.  This video is their complete performance that night.  But it still doesn't come...

Friday night June 24, 2016 was the night of the Difference Machine's second LP release party at 529 in Atlanta.  After the three opening acts, The Difference Machine took the stage shortly after midnight.  The sound of this band is hard, if not impossible to describe.  Industrial Hip Hop?  Psychedelic Funk?  Some times new music just defies description, yet you like it and want to hear more.  That's the case with me and this band.  This is their opening song from that night, the opening...

It was the 5th day, of the 5th month, at Aisle 5, in Little 5 Points, when 5 bands played The Space Cabbage Social Club's Cinco de Mayo show.  And the headliner was Vintage Nation, lead by an amazing woman named Ink.  It was a fired up, and inspiring set of music.  They touched on Funk, R&B, Rock, and Hip Hop, all with a somewhat tribal foundation exploring and flavoring each style. It was the debut of the Space Cabbage Social Club at Aisle 5 on January 29th, 2016.  The line up was diverse and had something for everyone, rock, funk, soul and ratchadelic Hip Hop.  The headliner was Allen Thomas and the family Orchestra, or at least the family trio.  But his one guest that set the audience on fire was Decatur's own Nihlus Nukes. Here is Nihlus bringing it to an appreciative crowd that night in Atlanta, with Niah Lyrical following with her solo track.

Great bands can have humble beginnings.  Starting off 30 years ago, The Grapes played basements, backyards, and warehouses.  They were the peoples band in Atlanta, and the people loved them.  Then came the clubs, the larger venues, tours, and a taste of regional fame.  But life can take over, people age, have families and the "Rock and Roll" life grows old with the band.  But the love of music, and your fans, can pull you back to the stage.  It's been 30 years playing together...

The Rumpke Mountain Boys were the last act to play The Jerry Day on August 2nd 2015.  There wasn't any back porch, though you might feel like you were on one.  There wasn't any campfire, though you may think you could smell the burning pine.  The Rumpke Mountain Boys took the Atlanta audience far from the city and Terminal West, and brought them to some secret back woods with their honest, down to Earth bluegrass. The December 19th, 2015 Punk Black show (number 7 for those keeping score) in Atlanta was a huge success.  The last band of the night was local rockers Howling Star.  At times when I hear this band, I'm reminded of the early 70's space rock bands of England and Europe.  And at other times I hear a young musician's having fun and their audience going nuts.  Either way, I'm really liking the sound these guys (and gal) are putting out.  Give them a listen then go see 'em.

Have you heard of Wara, that's Wara from the NBHD to be accurate?  I had never heard of this artist before last week.  While I was at The Masquerade in Atlanta, I saw him doing a soundcheck before the Jonwayne show.  It was then that I decided I needed to record his show. To me, Wara and his band sound like a cross between King Crimson and Public Enemy.  His sound is dark, errie, angry, confrontational, honest, and I like it a lot.  He sings about drugs, violence, guns...basic life in 2015...

Donna Hopkins has been playing in and around Atlanta for years.  Her blues style is down to earth, as well as down right fun.  She can hold an audience in awe, then have them dancing their asses off with the greatest of ease.  This is a short set (one of about 5 that night) she played at the newly reopened Good Old Days in Cumming Georgia on January 17th, 2015.  It runs 35 minutes.

Meet Michele Swan.  Michele just went through a divorce in 2014.  In that divorce settlement, the judge decreed that Michele would keep the home she has lived in since 2003.  But Chase Bank refused to recognize Michele as the owner.  Chase illegally sold her home to an investment company, which then foreclosed and evicted her two week before Christmas.  But Michele didn't give up.  She moved back into the home that is legally her's and plans to fight to stay in it, with the help of Occupy...

This was Dark Star Orchestra's second stop in Atlanta this year, a rather rare occurrence over the years.  It was a sold out show, once again, and they sure didn't disappoint.  And it was perhaps the oldest Dead show that I have seen them do here in the ATL.  On this night, August 14th, 2014, DSO played the 12-18-73 Tampa show.  A great performance by a band that just keeps getting better.  This is set 2.  Stay tuned for what is available of set 1.

This is the last in the series of shows covering the 2014 Jerry Day in Atlanta.  The guest artist and headliner this year was David Gans, host of the Dead Hour.  David was backed up by members of The Grapes.  He opened his set playing solo and did some of his original songs before being joined by The Grapes.  Thanks David, I'd say everyone, onstage and in the audience, had a real good time!
