All photos by Patrick T. Power, and must be used with attribution. Lawrence Lessig won't be coming home, exactly, when he appears at the Internet Archive for a talk about his latest book, They Don't Represent Us, on Dec. 17th. The Harvard professor will be coming to a place, however, where he should feel extremely comfortable. He has made defining the rules of the internet one of his life's causes, and that nicely intersects with the Internet Archive, which exists as a treasure trove of the...

Decentralized leadership has been around for ages. I've used the leadership techniques I first learned in the San Francisco Cacophony Society for 25+ years in all kinds of environments - from ad-hoc community activities to offsite corporate banking retreats. I share what I've learned that is relevant to balance order/chaos in our web3 teams. Participants learnt about decentralized leadership techniques, e.g. TAZ, do-ocracy vs DAOs, pros/cons, examples in various corporate and less corporate...

To control shared data use, build community, and for actual commerce, people and organizations need human-readable, non-repudiable contracts. JLINX is a web3 protocol that combines opensource JLINC data contracts in JSON, with what we call "micro-ledgers", data-streams using Ceramic, or Hypercore (in our first demo) for transport and immutability. I bring a perspective on decentralization and what we originally called "user-centric digital identity" that goes back more than...

Only a quarter of the Internet’s users today have complete, open access to it. Most worryingly, internet shutdowns are on the rise, with oppressive regimes controlling access to freedom of speech, the press and information online. This censorship threatens democracy, denies human rights and fuels global inequality. Mysterium is an open-source protocol making a borderless, censorship-resistant layer of the internet. Proof of Attendence Protocol (POAP) is a way to create fun event badges on Ethereum. But, there are some downsides: a centralized server holds the images and event info, minting on-chain costs money, and we can't tell if someone actually attended the event. But, we can change this - we can already create off-chain, peer-to-peer event badges for free, using tools like MetaMask!

This talk discusses js supplychain security risks, intro to js langsec, compartment spec, and more. When we build on open source, we invite many code authors into our app. This is dangerous but we can do it safely! LavaMoat enables fearless collaboration through runtime supplychain security protections! Sandbox your dependencies in browser and node!

In this brief talk, I'll show Patchfox which is a client for Secure Scuttlebutt. SSB is an offline-first local-first flexible decentralized platform where your friends are your data centre. If you haven't seen it before, this will be an eye opener. After the talk, you'll know more about Secure Scuttlebutt itself and also about how to use it with Patchfox.

Participants in this workshop will get a hands on introduction to the power of decentralized voting and the power of zero-knowledge proofs. This is a great way to get a simplified yet intuitive introduction to what is usually a complicated topic. The group will vote on a simple proposal using a simplified & decentralized process and show how zero-knowledge proofs increase trust in voting while keeping the voters' identities private.

This talk will share the story of how Digital Democracy co-developed Mapeo, a decentralized tool for community-owned data. Sharing real life examples of the needs of communities in remote places, we'll explore the lessons learned along the way to building decentralized technology that is now being used in dozens of countries around the globe, by communities on the frontlines of fighting to defend their lands.

This conversation will discuss the challenges of translating the complex world of web decentralization into documentary form for a broad audience. The talk will feature some rough footage and scenes from the in-progress documentary. It will present the DWeb world from an outsider's perspective and may be useful for developers who are trying to present their own hardware or software to the general public. Come be among the first to watch a rough cut of Dylan's feature length film about the...

The Metaverse our children will live in is coming in the next few years. As it slowly starts to come into fruition, we find it is still firmly rooted in the attention economy, replicating the same mistakes and scarcity-focused design found in traditional games. As builders, artists and policymakers, we have an opportunity to make the Metaverse stand for Decentralization, Openness and Prosociality. Let's explore this vision together! Listeners will learn how games are designed in the current...

An exploration of how rivalrous data is being made to exist in a distributed network without centralized authorities or hard network wide consensus.  We hope to introduce a project being conceptualized and built with Holochain, a P2P distributed application framework, which allows rivalrous (unique) data to exist in an distributed application built with Holochain and invite the crowd to participate in anyway possible.

How can the web3 ecosystem provide aid to those unfortunate situations around the world? I hope to explore ideas that can provide a method for transporting aid and banking services to communities experiencing war. I will be speaking on how current conflicts such as Tigray Ethiopia have affected me and how I can use our community to stand up using technology.

Decentralized safeguards for consumers are a must for widespread adoption of Web 3.0. Legacy approaches to regulation and consumer protection were designed for centralized constructs. It is time to explore and prototype new approaches for consumers and regulators to adopt based upon peer to peer projects and network architecture. Federated Consumer Safeguards (FCS) is a proposal to update consumer and regulatory approaches and is designed for decentralization. Join us and add your input!

Networked Autonomous Organisms combine Trust Networks, Liquid Democracy, and Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). DAOs continue to have issues with governance that Trust Networks address well. Trust Networks are social graphs whose links represent how the source node trusts the target node. They are akin to cryptographic  webs of trust . They have a unique inherent capacity for agile, efficient collective decision-making, sometimes called Liquid Democracy (see...

Why is it that on the internet the best information is often locked behind paywalls?  Brewster Kahle, founder of The Internet Archive, believes it’s time to turn that scarcity model upside down and build an internet based on abundance. Here he'll share a new project —  Democracy’s Library — a free, open, online compendium of government research and publications from around the world. Why? Because democracies need an educated citizenry to thrive. How we can start to abandon the...

This talk will be a reflection on the last 15 years of the web 3.0 giant global graph of social networks, especially the development of the ActivityPub protocol, a W3C technical recommendation for federated social networking. It will cover: - History of web1, web2, web3.0, web3 (wait, what's the difference?) - W3C ActivityPub Protocol overview - ActivityPub extensibility and possible futures
