“We’ve had 50 years of unusually stable weather… What do we need to do now, to garden in times that are less predictable?” Plant breeder Carol Deppe, author of The Resilient Gardener: Food Production and Self-Reliance in Uncertain Times, suggests growing a wider variety of crops adapted to conditions where you are; crops needing minimum inputs; and varying gardening patterns with the year. “Short season crops are a premium,” she asserts. She discusses seed saving, and storing enough...

Peak Moment 47: San Francisco is the first American city to formally address the challenges of oil depletion. Dennis Brumm and Alyse Heartwell recount how members of SF Oil Awareness envisioned, wrote and presented to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors a Peak Oil resolution, which they passed unanimously in April 2006. From government to business, banks to the media, it would seem that public trust in our institutions is at an all-time low. And yet this isn’t an age of distrust – far from it. Author of Who Can You Trust? Rachel Botsman is joined by Chief Economist at the Bank of England Andy Haldane to debate whether we are moving to a new era, in which we trust institutions less, but people and networks more. If this is so, what does it mean for those industries that are critically reliant on trust –...

Until MBNA showed up in Belfast, visitors would ask, “Where do people work around here?” While few ask that question these days, the answer would be much harder to give. The internet, inexpensive phones and other communication, good roads and transportation have all helped build a web of employment here in Belfast that never before could have happened. The course will provide a tour of the many ways different people work here without causing a visible ripple. The tour will include...

Dave Pollard and Tree Bressen riff on the power of potlucks to bring people into the sharing economy. Some people may be uncomfortable at first, but it's a dynamite way to have fun and begin to forge a community — plus, all kinds of connections can flow from them. A potluck can be as distinctive as the neighborhood itself — from West Vancouverites who may be more comfortable with cocktail parties to A Locavores' Potluck with young food producers near Victoria, B.C. Episode 266.
