It’s taken 200 years to make Tuscaloosa what it is today. But 12% of all that work wound up wiped out in a matter of minutes on April 27, 2011. The EF4 tornado that barrelled through the city left a path of death and destruction more than a mile wide. More than 5,000 homes and apartments were affected; 2,500 damaged and 1,600 seriously damaged. The rest? Gone. With so much of the city affected, the city took residents’ suggestions and implemented citywide policy and code changes through the...

On April 27, 2011, 26-year-old Ryne Chandler wanted to see a tornado. So he got in his Jeep, picked up a friend and they drove down 15th Street, unaware it would be the last time many well-known businesses would remain standing. Chandler and his friend came face to face with the storm and learned how fast his vehicle could go in reverse: 40 mph, if you're curious.

A decade later, it’s still a fresh wound in the mind of West Alabamians. For many who lived in and near Crescent Mobile Home Park in Holt, the EF4 tornado that swept through on April 27, 2011, left a gaping hole that even time cannot fill. Less than 50 yards from the mobile home park stands Soma Church, which has been there for the community since 2006. Soma Pastor Shaun Faulkner said he watched from his home as the tornado bore down on the church and everything around it.

Jeanette Barnes is one of many residents who called Rosedale off 10th Avenue in Tuscaloosa home on April 27, 2011. That day, she was sitting in her living room listening to the weather report when she learned a deadly tornado was heading right for her apartment complex. Krispy Kreme is well-known for its delicious, yeasty doughnuts and neon signs advertising their “hot and ready” status. But Tuscaloosa’s Krispy Kreme was among the hundreds of businesses decimated by the April 27, 2011 tornado that ripped right through the heart of town. But while that “hot and ready” promise wound up leveled like all the buildings around its former McFarland Boulevard location, it came back bigger and better than ever in almost the exact same spot.

One Tuscaloosa City Councilwoman is speaking out about what feels like an uptick in crime. District 7 Councilwoman Sonya McKinstry spearheaded the 100 Days of Nonviolence Campaign as a way of curbing crime around town, but a recent shooting in which a 5-year-old child was struck in the head is putting a damper on the good that's come from the effort. Tuscaloosa is a little over halfway through the initiative, which McKinstry said she started in the hopes of creating a more peaceful community.
