This map shows the ethnic distribution in Wisconsin.  The Belgian settlement might look small in comparison to the other ethnic groups in Wisconsin, however its actually is the largest rural settlement of people of this nationality in the United States. It covers an area 20 miles (32 km) wide and 50 miles (80 km) long in Door, Kewaunee and Brown counties. Most of Wisconsin's Belgian immigrants are French-speaking Walloons. Arriving primarily between 1853 and 1858, they tended to settle in a...

Namur, be that the location of the Belgian Heritage Center in Wisconsin, or capital city of the Wallonia region of Belgium.   In French and English is spelled Namur, and in Walloon its spelled Nameur. In the included audio, the English speaker pronounces it like its pronounced in French and English.  The Walloon speaker follows with how its pronounced differently in Walloon. Note: A common English mispronunciation of Namur is Namer

In both French and Walloon it's spelled tripe.  Its pronounced trip (like the English word meaning to stumble or fall).  In French it sounds more like treep. In Wisconsin you'll see it spelled Tripp, or Trippe.  If you hear someone say it as it looks spelled the Walloon/French way (Try pe), this is pretty much a clear indication the speaker has no Belgian heritage.   It's a pork sausage stuffed with cabbage.  Accept no imitations with sauerkraut! You'll frequently see it written in...

Overview of unified/standard Walloon also know as rifondou Walloon. In short; "rfondou walon" is a "standardized" version of Walloon intended to cover the different dialects. The word "rifondou" was invented by Lucien Mahin. It is the past participle of the verb rifonde (to melt again), from fonde (to melt), think of "to fuze (together)". In French, the verb "refondre" also means to revamp, improve something. So I guess his idea was to make not...

It appears the Walloons who chose to settle near the French Canadians at Bay Settlement learned how to prepare this soup from them.  (The French-Canadian fur traders who supposedly sustained themselves by stewing vats of whatever wild game and vegetables were on hand.)  The Belgians reinvented this a bit, and would use a chicken that was no longer laying...

Sandy explains to us how an unfortunate event sounded the alarm for the Belgian community, which has since organized itself to professionally preserve its Walloon heritage and save its dialect.

Cooyah/cuyoo is definitely "coyon/couyon" in Walloon and it is also a card game in Belgium. The original meaning is "ball, testicle". Apparently it was used to refer to the circle used in the calculation of the scores. Kermiss was originally Middle-Dutch and comes from Kirk-Messe (the German kirchmësse, or ‘church mass’). It originated in medieval times as an annual celebration commemorating the church's dedication before it morphed into the later festival. In Europe, it has various spellings: kermis, kermes, kercmisse, kircmisse, keermisse, carmisse, kirmisse and kercmisse but none of them end with the double ‘s’ which seems to be the most common spelling in Door County.   Show are some posters...
