I guess I must have had an hunch Foreground wasn't going to be its normal self for much longer, so I fired up WGET early in the morning and let it rip. Turns out my hunch was right, though it took a lot longer to devolve than anticipated in 2013. Holy crap, was I really staying up past 2 AM back then? Early in the 2010s Muzak had a streaming service on their Web site from which one could listen to simulcasts of 10 of their more popular satellite feeds, for free (curiously, Environmental was absent) and this was one of them. Consequently, many hours of enjoyment were had from the service between 2012 and its demise, due to a Web server restructuring and complete site redesign following the Mood Media buyout, in spring 2015. The audio is 32 kHz/64 Kb mono MP3; similar encoding parameters of...

No, I am not dead! My tape-transfer system is currently in a state of disarray following moving it to a new computer and audio lab (renovated spare bedroom) down the hall in April, compilcated by various Linux bit-quantity-related software compatibility woes, and haven't gotten round to hooking it all back up yet. I still have about a dozen or so AEI tapes left to transfer but it'll be a while before I do them because of this, so be patient. This part of the Northwe-t has also been cursed with...

Wow... I'm back. Time to pick up and continue the AEI tapes that had to be put on hold for a while due to technology upgrades and the general weirdness surrounding my schedule and living conditions as of late. This is a Timeless pop album from possibly the very end of the 80s (1989 or 1990), from the style of music and the labelling -- see the scans. The cassette has what I'm calling the "old style" barcode label on the reverse (wide font) but uses the newer "AEI MUSIC"...

This is a recording of a broadcast from Dutch muziekzender pirate station "Billy de Bluffer" playing Polka records (as if you couldn't tell from the title.....) and other European folk music. Observed and recorded via the University of Twente at Enschede Web SDR (http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/). I have no idea where this transmission originated (maybe somewhere in town?). It appears the music was coming directly from LP records and singles because there is some surface noise and...

Here's some more from the Dutch free radio scene. This is a long, impromptu recording of a group of several " zender amateur" (short for "muziekzender" ("music station")) pirates communicating free-form amongst themselves in the Twente, Overijssel Province area. Recorded from the University of Twente SDR. These sporadic, round-robin transmissions, as far as I can tell, was a QSO and banter session probably following a broadcast of the "Montecarlo Radio"...

Another AEI custom light rock/instrumentals tape, from February 1993. The client name is not known. (It's not from The Gap. I've verified it.) It sounds like it could be another Red Lobster instore programme, albeit a little more upbeat than the August tape. I believe the discrepancy of volume levels and companding between tracks was an issue with how the recording was mastered rather than physical damage. I have a couple more Special Programme tapes up here from that same period that are also...

This, and the Muzak "American Graffiti" tribute programme , is the kind of stuff KKSN-FM specialised in and got me through my hellish teenage years in the late 1990s/early 2000s! A classic soft rock/oldies/smooth jazz instrumentals custom programme by AEI Music. This is what customers of Red Lobster seafood restaurants in the USA listened to in late summer 1993. The placement of an instrumental every 3 or 4 vocal cuts almost makes it sound like a loose version of Expressions. RL and Olive Garden were still O&O by General Mills at the time and Darden Restaurants Group wouldn't be spun off until sometime in 1995. Darden switched from AEI to Muzak later in the 1990s so...

The tape's label is actually a light purple colour, not the dull gray it appears as in the cover picture -- compare against the E-Bay photograph under the "JPEG" option (file m2-4046.jpg). No, this is not a black-and-white or grayscale scan; my scanner has poor colour rendering in certain shades and this is what it showed up as. Check out the...

(See "JPEG" option for playlist/J-card scans.) A wonderful programme of 1950s/1960s oldies and doo-wop classics. The music format mostly parallels what I grew up listening to on KKSN-FM in its heyday as an oldies station (and what my parents/grandparents used to hear on the original KISN on 910 kHz, back when all this stuff was current), but a bit more diverse. For example, KKSN never played reggae and probably didn't, as far I know, anyways, play blues. It includes many selections...

Since we're rapidly approaching daylight time 2021, did you ever wonder what the radio signal sounds like that your automatic wall clock, if you have one, sets itself to? Here you go. This is a sample of raw time code captured between 0535 and 0538 GMT 2021 March 14 from WWVB (60 kHz) transmitting from Fort Collins, CO. Recorded using an 80 Hz bandwidth upper-sideband filter with the centre frequency tuned at 1000 Hz (a common test tone). Captured via the Kiwi-SDR system in Newport, Oregon...

This little Muzak aircheck was from the "Metro" ambient/trip-hop satellite music programme. It was captured from the simulcast on Muzak's streaming server muzakstream2, the afternoon of 2013 May 11. As far as I am aware, I did not gather any more of Metro than this (instead concentrating mainly on Foreground, 7890 and Tropical Breeze/The Beach) so this isolated fragment is all I have. I think I meant it as a "preview" sample for review should I have chosen to capture more,...

So. What the hell is "Mixtape"? Basically, it's my very loose interpretation of AEI Music's defunct "Commuter Pop" (merged with DMX's "Adult Contemporary" library after the 2002 buyout) and "Pop Style" libraries, but more upbeat. When I began working at Red Robin in late 2001, they had been receiving Commuter Pop on Philips CD-I for several years prior and played it instore. Inspired by it to some degree I began building my own CP libraries on cassette...

Recently at work they decommissioned a soda pop vending machine that never worked right, and I got hold of some of its electronics before the disposal men came by to haul the rest away. The 2010s was a time of great ambivalence and disillusionment when it came to me and broadcast radio. Yeah, it's true. My love of radio sort of ended around 2008 or so, and about midway through the ensuing decade (by the time Iheartradio was taking form and becoming aggressive) my interest in local radio was dead. Although great technological advances were being made in broadcasting during this time, I didn't really care very much since we were watching local radio turning into something...

One last one and they're through. This tape is from very late 1997 and early 1998. KOIN (then channel 6, now channel 40) is the CBS affiliate for the Portland, Ore. area. Because of a major children's television overhaul that occurred as a result of the communications reform laws of 1996 (beginning of the "educational and informational" era) CBS had dropped "Garfield and Friends" and most of its cartoon programming by this point, and the promos had a definite...

God. I don't know if I should upload this thing or bury it. Alright, I said there was another KOIN saturday-morning audio cassette and here it is, this time from late 1997. In 2014 Centurylink repair service had to fix my 5ESS line (892 exchange in NPA 360) which had developed a ground loop due to a wire pair or a connection point going bad. I hooked up an inter box to the computer, fired up Audacity and went off to my first day at a new job whilst it recorded the whole while. All in real time from the point I got up at 0730 Pacific and hit "record" to when the person who was home at the time (wasn't me) answered the phone to confirm the liny's test call...

(a.k.a. Tropical Breezes a.k.a. Beach Party) By request! This is the last of my long-play airchecks from the official streaming MP3 simulcast of Muzak's "The Beach" satellite programme, of 2014 October 18. I don't remember what the start/end times of this capture were but back then I typically would capture from around 1200-0000 Pacific (1500-0300 Eastern). Since the weather is expected to be crap (well, in my locale, anyways) for the next couple weeks, turn the furnace as high as...

(a.k.a. Tropical Breezes a.k.a. Beach Party) By request! Here are two brief recordings from the streaming MP3 simulcast of Muzak's "The Beach" satellite programme, of 2014 February 15 and April 30. The short runtimes of these airchecks were (if I remember correctly) the result of system problems. I had intended them to be much longer than they ended up being. I think an electrical outage affected one and a major Debian 5.0.5 crash-and-burn error requiring a full system reinstall...

This is an aircheck of the popular commercial-free, automated oldies/nostalgia station KSUR-AM ("LA Oldies K-Surf") on 1260 Kc, Los Angeles, CA, captured using WGET on Debian 9 in the afternoon of 2019 November 19. KSUR is one of several stations that shango066 often uses to test radio sets that he has rebuilt and that was how I discovered it. Since I live many miles out of range of the station (but can sometimes nick it via night time skywave DX if I'm really really lucky) this audio...

Here's something I didn't even know I had until recently: another KBMR (now KQDY) aircheck tape. This tape was in a lot of several reels given to me by a neighbour as he was preparing to move to the Washington coast for his retirement in 2010. Like the November 1971 recording it appears to have been done in the evening hours, but this one includes documentation. The transfer was straight off the reel and unedited (but see next paragraph) and is a little bit choppy in places because of his...

Aircheck of public station KPLU-FM (now KNKX), recorded possibly in the 1980s or early 1990s. KPLU then, as now, broadcast a format of jazz classics and National Public Radio programming. This reel-to-reel is an high fidelity mono recording at 3 3/4 in/s in half-track (played on one channel of the quarter-track Teac A2300SX). This is the tape that was included with/mounted on the Teac when I acquired the deck in summer 2017. The tape was actually somehow wound on the reel upside-down...

This reel-to-reel tape has been following me around for the better part of 25 years. I don't remember where I acquired it from. (Yard sale? Badwill?) This broadcast was on KIXI 880 AM in Seattle, WA, not very long after they picked up Satelite Music Network's "Stardust" format (a.k.a. "Unforgettable Favourites" a.k.a. "Timeless" a.k.a. "Timeless Classics") after ditching their unpopular rock & roll oldies format. The broadcast date was calculated from...

(a.k.a. "the "Cliff's Notes" version (hah!)) In 1991 the House of Mouse released a 3D comic book with an audio supplement on cassette (both of which are now quite rare). I actually had this set "back in the day" but lost the tape years ago. I was lucky to recently find a pair of the tapes, both new in shrinkwrap, on Amazon. This recording was produced using a combination of binaural crossfeed processing and a QS phase generator for its "3D" effect, possibly...
