Footage of the U.S. Gunboat Panay in Nanking China during the Japanese offensive knows as "The Rape of Nanking." After evacuating foreign civilians, the Panay was attacked and sunk by Japanese aircraft. The so-called Panay Incident almost led to war between the United States and Japan. The Asiatic Fleet's gunboats were tasked with protecting American shipping (primarily oil tankers) from pirates and the Japanese. Contains amazing footage of life in China circa 1935 including the cities of Chunking, Shanghai, and the countryside.
