Footage of the U.S. Gunboat Panay in Nanking China during the Japanese offensive knows as "The Rape of Nanking." After evacuating foreign civilians, the Panay was attacked and sunk by Japanese aircraft. The so-called Panay Incident almost led to war between the United States and Japan.
