Dane Rudhyar, well known in New Music circles as a modern composer of often brief, and sometimes dissonant, works for piano, was also a philosopher and author of many books on Astrology. Less deterministic than traditional Astrology, Rudhyar’s system was more a blending of Jungian philosophy with elements of Astrology, Theosophy, and New Age thinking. In this lecture, recorded at the Newman Center in Berkeley California, on March 10, 1972, Rudhyar distinguishes between these two types of astrology, one, the more traditional, deterministic, and event oriented, while the other is more person centered. This latter type, which Rudhyar calls humanistic astrology does not seek to make predictions about future events, but rather serves as a therapy by which a person can achieve a form of self actualization. When viewed this way Rudhyar claims, Astrology is not so much a method for telling you its going to rain tomorrow, so much as a method to teach yourself how to use the rain to improve ones situation, and increase ones self awareness.
