Arturo Kerbel-Shein, Yiddish language activist, was interviewed by Christa Whitney on August 16, 2013 at Yidish-Vokh in Reisterstown, Maryland. This interview is conducted entirely in Yiddish.
Arturo grew up in a suburb of Mexico City in a heavily culturally-oriented Jewish home. His family has been in Mexico for several generations and is a part of the vibrant Mexican Jewish community which he describes in his interview.
Arturo's first brush with Yiddish activism came at the age of 12, when he learned that the director of the Jewish day school he attended was planning to end the school's Yiddish language program. At 14, he attended Yidish-Vokh for the first time and he has returned to the week-long retreat two times since then. Arturo has a passionate vision for the Yiddish language's role in the Jewish community of Mexico and he discusses his activist work throughout the interview.
