. hello. i'm geeta guru-murthy with bbc world news. our top stories. euing foreign ministers are be respected. some of the girls kidnapped from the school in nigeria appear on a video released by the militant group boko haram. it's the last day of voting in the world's biggest democracy. three key states india are voting. results are due friday. day 30 of the oscar pistorius murder trial begins in
south africa. hello. eu foreign ministers are meeting in brussels to discuss further sanctions against russia. pro russian separatists in ukraine have claimed an overwhelming victory in the self-rule referendum. russia says the result ares must be respected. within hours of the polls closing here in donetsk, organizers say 89% of voters chose self-rule. a similar vote with similar results was held in the neighbori neighbori
neighboring region. the president has called for participation in the region. >> translator: the implementation comes with rule in a civilized manner without outrage of violence or dialogue. represents of kiev, donetsk. >> that's lavrov there speaking at the eu meeting. the british foreign secretary hague condemned the referendum. >> these votes, attempts of referendum have zero credibility. in the eyes of the world they are illegal by anybody's standard. they don't meet anybody's standard of being properly con ducted in proper referendum or
election. the people organizing them didn't pretend to meet the standards. >> in moscow, it is said while putin called for the vote to be postponed it comes as surprise that russia expects the results. >> moscow takes a different view from william hague. we heard from sergei lavrov a few minutes ago actually quoting from a statement issued earlier today. a short statement issued by the kremlin basically saying the referendum in donetsk in eyes of moscow represented the will of the people there. moscow noted the high turnout in those votes and made it clear it would respect the votes. wi&=p. kremlin condemned what i described as attempts to sabotage the votes with the use of violence including the use of heavy weaponry against
civilians. those are words of kremlin. there was also a call for dialogue between kiev and donetsk and luhansk for the results of referendum and the organization in europe could be part of a dialogue. >> is moscow going to be worried if there are more sanctions from the eu? >> i don't think moscow will like the idea of more sanctions. will it be worried, i don't think so. so far the kremlin hasn't shown it's concerned about the sanctions from the eu or united states. certainly not concerned enough to make it change course on ukraine. >> steve rosenburg. india's five week election, longest in the country's history has ended the final day of po
pollipol polling. the scale of the vote is immense. 814 million are registered to vote in the world's largest democratic elections. that's 100 million more than the last in 2009. the party needs a minimum of 272 seats if it's going to form a majority government. today focuses on the fortunes of this man, opposition bjp leader narenda modi. he is the man many believe will now become india's next prime minister. voter turnout is expected to be high. as you see there's some security at the polling stations. that is because of the tension there. we are expecting the final results this friday. we should know the outcome of exit polls soon after voting finishes together at 12:30 "gmt," 6:30 local time.
>> reporter: there's a good early turnout at this polling station with temperatures projected to be in the 40s today. many have been coming here early to vote to beat the heat. now this is one of the most anticipated battles of the election here with varanasi. the front runner focus off against the common man party who's won support for his campaign against corruption. let's go inside to see how the voting is going. heavy security at all polling sfa stations. what happens once inside names are checked off and their fingers are marked to prevent fraud. this is how they cast their vote with this electronic voting machine. the man inside the booth is pressing a button to make his chose. this is how it's done across the
country. after five weeks of voting, nine rounds in all, longest elections in india's history, many indians will be relieved this process is almost at an end. in the last hour, the islamist militant group boko haram has released a video claiming the nigeria girls have been converted to islam. in the video the group claims to show 130 of the girls wearing full length and praying in an .z indisclosed rural location. let's get more from abuja. i gather you've not seen the video as yet. what do we know and how do we know it's genuine? >> no, i haven't seenç the vid yet. i've spoke ton someone that saw
the slid ovideo. he tells me the leader of boko haram is in the video saying he's ready to release the girls but on the condition all prisoners from the group are also released. the video shows over 100 girls saying they have converted to islam. three girls have spoke on in the video according to the person that told me. one of the girls looked terrified in the video. these are the details gather ed from the ten minute video that's just been released in the last one hour. >> do we know how this video has come to light? >> we don't know, but i mean the normal source we receive information like this and get the correspondent is the normal
route that he has seen the video. it looks authentic. it came through the route previous videos have come to him from the group. >> this demand for the release of prisoners, who are boko haram referring to precisely? >> there are a number of prisoners that have been arrested by the government known to be members of boko haram. some of them are on trial at the moment. the leader of the boko haram is referring to these prisoners. there are hundreds of people in custody that have not gone on trial which boko haram is alleging the government has arrested them on antiterrorism in nigeria. must be referring to many members that have been arrested by the government and trained to negotiate, maybe a prisoner.
there's over 200 girls abducted. >> you're told the government and state were told and were aware of the dvideo? >> the government has not reacted to this video. we will wait to get a reaction from the government before saying anything on whether the government is going to agree to release of prisoners. i think -- knowing the antiterrorism in nigeria, i think the government will say it's not in the process of negotiating with a terrorist group. we have to wait from reaction from the government to know what the government is going to do about the recent demand by boko haram. >> i know obviously this video has just now emerged. we have got pictures. we're going to show you now.
these are, we are told, over 100 girls who were abducted by boko haram, seen here wearing the full length. i gather three girls do speak in the video. i don't know if you can see these pictures. we're listening to some of the sound from this video. we believe the girls are reciting the first of the ka ran. over 200 girls were abducted almost four weeks ago from the school. the leader of the group also speaks in the video. these are apparently some of the girls. about half the girls that were taken. i didn't know whether you could see the output there. families are very keen to see
these pictures. i don't know if it's aired yet on television in nigeria or if there's been any family reaction. >> i think it has not yet been aired in nigeria. i think this is the first time it's been aired. i could not see but i could hear the sound. these girls are taught how to site the holy ka ran. i think that's what they've been trying to learn from just the sound you've just played now. i'm sure the families of these girls now will be trying. it's hopeful that at least the girls are alive and the families will be waiting and hoping they can be rescued. >> do we have anymore information as to where they are? we're showing the video. >> at the moment we don't have the information of where the girls are being held. i think it is an undisclosed
location. looks like the location is remote. even yesterday i think the governor said he had information of their whereabouts. he believes the girls are still held within the territory of nigeria and have not been taken to neighboring countries. according to him, the information is they are still in nigeria. i believe that. somewhere in nigeria. it could be in the forest where boko haram has camps there. the governor believes they are held in nigeria. >> many thanks for that. we're going to cross to john also in the area on the phone. what can you tell us about the release of this video? >> reporter: well it happened half an hour ago, 45 minutes
ago. it shows -- no doubt you've been describing to view ers what it shows. it seems to be genuine and follows the past boko haram pattern of videos and release. the interesting thing i think about it, it's -- i'm in the capital of the state where the school actually is. this is are almost like a kind of besieged town. boko haram has a lot of scope all around it in much of the state. so we haven't been able to see the video at all yet. >> just to let you know. we're just showing the video pictures now. >> you're better off than i am. the key thing in it is what boko
haram leader is saying is that these girls presumably all girls will not be released until all the prison pers held by the government forces have been released. although that sounds like a very hard and brutal line, you have to take it. i think this is the first step in a potential negotiation. i mean, they're not refusing, not threatening the girls. they're saying that they won't be released. if you remember just a few days ago they were talking about selling anymore into slavery. i suspect this is boko haram's response to the extreme pressure being placed now on the nigerian federal government by the international countries by international figures. the president of united states, the prime minister of britain and so on and so on. all demanding that nigeria
should do something about this. whether -- how long it would take to get through some sort of negotiation, get to the negotiation, i don't know. these things have happened in the past. >> if the girls are who they are reported to be, obviously the girl's families are relieved to see them alive. we don't know when this video was filmed of course. it's also true this is about over 100 girls. double that were originally taken. any information for that? >> well, i mean, i'm not really the person i suppose to ask about that. we'd need to talk to boko haram. it is about half the girls. we understand there's 130 shown in the video. we've been told of course by local officials here in borno state and as well as by government officials in abuja that the girls are likely to
have been broken up into small groups and he hidden in differe places. bringing them together or maybe this was early on, we can't know that. this is also an indication perhaps they've not been sold into slavery like the leader of boko haram was threatening recently. it supports the what the governor said to us yesterday. he doesn't believe they've been sent across the borders to chad. they're still here in nigeria. >> we saw the girls apparently citing the first lines from the karan all dressed in full length. have they all come from christian families originally? do we know that or not? >> it's curious how little detail we actually have.
my understanding of it is there are plenty muslim as well as christian girls kidnapped. an entire month later the government in abuja and nigeria simply hasn't been able to establish the most basic facts. i've spoken to the fathers of both christian and muslim girls. it's pretty clear they were a mixed bunch. if they're learning the first chapters of the karan we can take it that's part of the trñmkçó convert rather than us seeing pictures of muslim girls going through their prayers.zv9gz4lw1eûkiñrñy% john simpson, many thanks ind d
indeed. we'll update you on developments we get on that story on the abduction. there was a risk of further political turmoil in thailand as rival groups of demonstrators take to the streets of bangkok. they're discussing demand of opposition protestors to replace the government with a administration. nine members of the cabinet of yingluck resigned after she was found guilty of abuse of power. let's go now to bangkok. huge amounts of pressure now. update us now. >> everyone is watching what's happening in the senate today, the upper house of parliament. it's still functions. parliament of the lower house doesn't exist at the moment because the election is sabotaged. the upper house is still sitting. half the senate is repointed.
that means more than half in toe total are hostiles of the government. the protest movement we've seen in the last six months has moved main camp close to the parliament and demanding the senate take the remains of yingluck's government and appoint an interim neutral administration. that request although it doesn't appear to have ground in the constitution is taken reasonably seriously by the senate. the 18 members of the senate are discussing it at the time. they are warning the protest leaders they can't give them an answer today. everyone is watching to see if they make that move. if they do, there will be strong reaction from the red shirt side. >> many thanks indeed. stay with us here on bbc world news. much more to come. as we've been seeing, boko haram releases video showing girl

2013. at the point of contention after the first bullet hurt her hip, did she fall on the magazine rack in the toilet cubicle or not. i think what nel is trying the to do is create space. if reeva was hit on the right hip as she collapsed and as the witness is saying that she fell on that magazine rack. nel thinks that perhaps that would have created enough space for her to scream. that's what he's building up to. thomas, the ballistic expert we understand the witness will call a few more witnesses, psychologist and sound expert to defend oscar pistorius. he says of course it was a mistake when he shot and killed
his model girlfriend reeva steenkamp last year. the point behind this is to get a detailed account of whether reeva steenkamp was standing. >> out of four bullet, three hit her. one missed and ricochetted from the toilet cubicle wall and hit her in the back. as far as the defense is concerned, one of those bullets could not have hit her. her body was probably hit while she was falling. that's where we're in csi mode here. they're trying to prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt. that's what he had said earlier. the court is scheduled to this

least. as you can see if girls are wearing a full length praying in an indisclosed location saying the first few lines from the karan. these are the pictures we have in. there are images of three girls speak. we're not yet showing those. there's also footage of the leader of the boko haram group also speaking within the video. these are the first images that have been released of the girls. it is almost four weeks since the girls were abducted. let's go live now to the correspondent. what do we know about the images? can we verify them at the moment or not? >> well at the moment we know that boko haram has released this video. the video is actually 27 minutes
long. the leader of the group took the first ten minutes speaking. the rest of the minutes after he finished his address he showed the girls. about 130 of them. now the details that we are getting is that some of the girls, over the 2 00 have converted to islam according to the video. i think presumably this number of girls converted to islam that we're showing. they're shown reciting the karan and raising their hands in prayer. three girls were shown. two said they were christians converted to islam. the third said she was already a é-z?mbó«uu.ñç group just released. the leader of boko haram said
those that have converted to islam, they have become sisters, members of the group. for the others that have been converted, he's saying they can only consider releasing them if the government of nigeria releases members of their group that are held in captivity at the moment in government hands. >> do we have any idea whether that sort of negotiation has been going on or will be possible? >> no. we have no idea there have been those kinds of negotiations. if you remember the government of nigeria set up a negotiation with boko haram. the report and work was finished without getting to core members of the group. the president of the group said clearly he's not in negotiation with boko haram.
boko haram according to him he is not able to get this in contact with leaders to enter negotiations. on this recent video, we have not had reaction from the government. the video was released in the last one hour. >> i don't know whether you've managed to see the pictures yourself yet, but we're showing them. have the families had the chance to see the video? is it seen on tv there? >> video has not been shown here in local television in nigeria. this would be good news to parents that at least some of the girls are shown live and that is the hope for families waiting now for almost four weeks, waiting to hear news of these abducted girls. you remember these girls where are abducted from their own school. 276 of them. this is the first time we're seeing their pictures, the
pictures that appeared in this video. >> i don't know whether you have seen the material and what the girls are supposed to be saying when they speak. i gather one of them at least is reciting from the karan. do we know if there's anything more spoken by the girls themselves on the video? >> well in the video, the girls that have spoken. the three of them have mentioned their names. they mentioned where they come from. they're calling on parents they understand what muslim is. they're calling on parents to also join to become muslims. this is according to what the girls have been speak in the video. >> and any political reaction at all yet on this? >> there has not been reaction.
this video is coming to light now. we had the release of the video q]ó3?ur reaction from government in nigeria. we'll wail wait to find out what the reaction is to the video released. >> is this something boko haram has done before? was this authenticated, the route this has been released is this is that a previously released route? >> boko haram has released videos a number of times. this appears to come from the same source. we confirmed previous videos. it was seen the content of this video is the same as the kind of things we're seeing in previous videos. we can can confirm this came from boko haram. the leader has spoken. from the content of the video, it does look like it's the same
american that has spoken in previous videos. the video came from the same source we knew, boko haram has been releasing videos in previous instances. >> thanks very much. we don't know when these pictures were taken. a little while ago i spoke to our world affairs editor john simpson for his thoughts. he's in the capital of the borno state. >> it seems to be genuine. it follows the past boko haram pattern of videos and releases. the interesting thing about it -- i'm in the capital where the school actually is. this is almost like a kind of besieged town. boko haram has a lot of scope all around it and in much of the

it is about half the girls. as you say, we understand there's 130 shown in the video. we've been told of course by local officials here in borno state as well as by government officials in abuja that the girls are likely to have been broken up into smallish groups and hidden in different places. so bringing them together or maybe this was early on. we can't know that. it is also an indication perhaps that they've not been sold into slavery as the leader of boko haram was threatening recently. perhaps too it support what is the governor of borno state said to us yesterday that he doesn't think they've been sent across the borders into chad or cameroon. they're still here in nigeria. >> we saw the girls apparently
