called mark carney governor and we have heard the rhetoric of canada a 51st state also being turned down, so so much to look out for and so many interesting aspects of this relationship that will be interesting to watch. we are seeing on screen the front entrance to the white house where we are awaiting the arrival of mark carney. when he says, we don't need canada's energy, lumber, cars, that is not a very accurate definition of the relationship. there are states that i very much dependent on this trading relationship with canada and if you were to unpick the trade agreement that donald trump himself helped to negotiate when he was last in office, that would be an extraordinarily complex thing? the word. the complexity is part of what has made this difficult for the canadians,
4:46 pm
understanding how to proceed -- it would. there is a trade agreement between the us and canada and mexico and that is up for joint review in 2026, and the trump administration is looking to push forward those negotiations and maybe they are part of any sort of bargaining on tariffs. we're not sure about is the case but that is the reporting we have seen this end, but to a point about that not being entirely true about the us not leading canada's lumber and cars, we have had so many conversations with the representatives along the northern border especially in detroit, the motor city, the car industry there, we have spoken to many representatives of that industry who say that is simply not true, and the supply chain between the us and canada on cars is very integrated, between detroit and windsor across the border, so
4:47 pm
you will have a car crossing six or seven times in the production, so this is a supply chain and also an industry that is very well integrated. other businesses have said they are reliant on potage from canada and some of the other critical minerals we mention, so that is not entirely true to say that the us is not reliant on canada at all -- some of the other critical resources. ford motor car has also said they have lost money as a result of the tariffs. a lot of this will come down to chemistry and the one thing you can say about mark carney, he's a very polite man. he does not suffer. lovely, though. he's a central banker. -- does not suffer fools gladly, though. donald trump did not have much respect
4:48 pm
for his predecessor justin trudeau. think about the crises that mark carney was able to lead the banks through, the governor of the bank of canada, there was the financial crisis, and then he went to the bank of england during brexit so clearly a safe pair of hands is how he is described in a very calm demeanour. that's the hallmark of the way he negotiates and also with the media, and that is going to be seen as a strength going into conversations with donald trump. it is important to note that mark carney has been quite firm in his language. he is not backing down in standing up to trump and that rhetoric is what helped the election, for him to get elected as prime minister, but we have seen in the white house, with the previous meetings, effective
4:49 pm
negotiations, the strategy with donald trump is not what we saw with the ukrainian president, which went very poorly for the ukrainian president, but from what we saw from other leaders like the italian leader and the british prime minister, and it is clear that the canadians are very aware of that and mark carney is very suited for that kind of communication. what about defence? the arctic is opening up to trade and there are security implications for canada in that and at the moment the us is spending a lot of money on defence in the northern atlantic in that area of the arctic, so if there was a divorce of the kind that mark carney has suggested, they might be it away from the us,
4:50 pm
what would be the security implications? what is interesting, as donald trump wrote on the truth social post, in addition to giving them free military protection, so it will be a point of discussion on the canadians, they talk about more defence spending, and the implications for canada, they see themselves as an important partner to the us which has stood by them in previous military engagements, and which is important on the global stage as well. we are likely to see the trump administration put to the need for more defence spending from canada and you have the canadians talking about deeper engagement with allies in europe and the pacific, and that could signal what we see is a general scepticism towards the trump administration and its new real relationship, and the canadians
4:51 pm
have been clear that they see themselves as an important defence partner although it is not clear that the us, the white house, sees it the same way. we can see the pictures of the entrance to the white house. we have an important line of news from the indian prime minister narendra modi who said on tuesday that water belonging to india that was earlier sent outside the country would now be retained inside the country for internal use. it is important given the sensitivity to make the point that he did not elaborate any further so he did not go into, he did not link the story to the water agreement. nor did he refer to pakistan, but you might recall after the terrorist attack in kashmir just a few weeks ago, the water
4:52 pm
agreement between the countries was one thing that the indian said they were looking at again in the pakistani defence minister said if there was interruption of their water supplies, they would consider that an act of war, so although he has not specified what he is talking about directly, cutting off water to pakistan or the water agreement, the security implications of that are obviously quite serious so we will see what reaction comes on narendra modi. back now to the imminent arrival of the canadian prime minister mark carney. campaigning with tough rhetoric is one thing about this is really where the rubber hits the road, when he tests out the stronger language with the american president. as we discussed, you made the point
4:53 pm
that someone said what we don't want to hear is any zelensky type disagreements, so how does he do this and how does he approach this and get his point across in a way that does not antagonise the us president? it would be a difficult line to work and i'm going to take a sip of water because the pollen levels are quite high today. you have my sympathy. i know exactly what that is like. we can see the flags up here and it appears that mark carney will be arriving imminently. this is going to be a difficult moment, and as the guests have
4:54 pm
mentioned, one of possible political apparel for mark carney. he has campaigned on the tough rhetoric of standing up to donald trump, and a member of the speech he delivered on election night talking about america not breaking canada, and now of course is the moment where mark carney will have to be in negotiating mode. canadian analysis say he has a bit of leeway after winning the election, and most canadians think the trade spat is the doing of donald trump and that mark carney has stood up to him. donald trump has called mark carney a gentleman. i believe you are looking at these pictures, we can see the motorcade arriving. mark carney
4:55 pm
appears to be arriving. a moment of political tension between these countries but also opportunity, not just apparel but opportunity for establishing a relationship between donald trump and mark carney where they can base future negotiations, but the first moment will be key. we cannot see the handshake but hopefully you can? the motorcade has pulled up and xt handshake. it looks quite well -- and there is the handshake. fist pump from donald trump and in they go. there is a private meeting scheduled for about an hour but so that we might get
4:56 pm
some side comments, maybe in the meeting room? those moments are not always live and our correspondent in the white house says we will have an opportunity to see the exchange live and think about how many interesting moments we have got from donald trump, interesting policy announcements, in those oval office fireside moments, so this will be an opportunity to get a better idea of where donald trump stands on this relationship and also the prime minister mark carney and how he handles those questions being thrown out from the media. there is no joint press conference scheduled for after the bilateral meeting, but there is a solo press conference scheduled for the canadian prime minister and they say he is heading to the canadian embassy and will
4:57 pm
deliver a press conference there. we might get a better idea of how his delegation has seen this meeting and we will get a first sense in the oval office meeting which should happen shortly. i'm conscious as well that the establishment in this country will be watching this meeting pretty closely because king charles is still the head of state in canada, and although donald trump talks about governor justin trudeau in canada becoming the 51st state, canada is actually part of the commonwealth and we have just had it announced that king charles will open parliament later this month to begin the 45th canadian government. the last time the monarch open a session of the canadian parliament was 1977 when queen elizabeth went so it is notable they have taken this moment to ask king charles to open parliament, may be a subtle
4:58 pm
statement of the white house that they like things as they are. indeed. subtle or maybe not, one of the white house has not commented on about an important message from the canadians on their sovereignty. on this key issue that donald trump has repeatedly brought up, and many analysis have said this would be the poison pill for this meeting, if the question of the canadian sovereignty would be broached in the meeting, if donald trump goes back to these words about canada being the 51st state or that it should be. and the arrival from the king in canada later this month will be an important message at that point and canada is also hosting the g7 as well where you will see world leaders on hand, so an important moment for canada in the spotlight as it stakes out its position on the global stage and its position on trade and tariffs with the us but
4:59 pm
also trying to stand up for what it says is canadian sovereignty. we will be back to you very shortly. we are going to reset for the top of the hour. we are focusing on the meeting between mark carney and donald trump and we are waiting for the live comments from both men after they have just gone into the white house. you are watching bbc news.
