live from london. this is bbc news. iran launches new waves of airstrikes across israel in response to israeli attacks targeting its nuclear programme. this is the scene live in tel aviv. sirens and loud explosions have been heard across israel with local media report that three people have been killed. two of the fatalities were. in central israel, this is the scene live where an iranian missile struck a residential building. there have been reports
8:01 am
of explosions at tehran airport as an iranian un envoy says nearly 80 killed in israeli strikes. the iranian leader says israel has "launched a war" and will suffer heavy blows in return. air accident investigators, including a team from the uk , arrive in the indian city of ahmedabad to examine the wreckage from the air india crash. and confirmation of a knighthood for former england football captain, david beckham, in the king's birthday honours list. iran and israel have been launching new strikes on each other as direct military conflict between the two countries goes into a second day. i'll take you to the latest pictures in a moment, but for clarity, these are the key developments this hour. iran has targeted ballistic missiles at israel as its as its supreme leader vows to "inflict heavy blows". it's now being reported that at least three people in israel have been killed.
8:02 am
the israel defense forces says it is continuing strike targets in iran. the idf says they are aimed at removing threats. previously nuclear sites and military leaders were targeted. the un says 78 people have been killed. iran's supreme leader ayatollah ali khamenei accused israel of starting a war. israel's un envoy danny danon has called israel's operation "an act of national preservation." president trump has called on iran to strike a deal with israel over its nuclear development but talks scheduled for sunday seem unlikely to go ahead. in the last hour or so, jordan says it has reopened airspace. it had suspended flights due to the strikes. these are live pictures from tel aviv. our team in israel says when the sirens sounded
8:03 am
before dawn millions of people sought shelter. the authorities in israel don't allow us to share the exact location of missile strikes, for fear it will provide useful information to the iranian military. those sirens also sounding in jerusalem. blasts also heard. we can take you to live pictures in central israel. this is where an iranian missile did hit a residential property and you can see the damage that has been done. that reef has been destroyed in it that mr. -- that's a reef has been destroyed in that missile attack. in the last hour or so, we have had a confirmation that two people did die. the mda, and emergency service, says a woman in her 60s was rescued unconscious and without vital

signs and a man aged 45 was pronounced dead without being evacuated -- of the been evacuated. we have also heard from local israeli media from a fire service captain saying that he pulled a three baby out of a destroyed home, describing putting her into his arms and given her to the first police officer he saw and started to lift out other family members. the fire service captain said they were doing that as people were trapped in homes. as we said, 21 people, have been injured in it this incident in the central israel. you can see that damage caused by that iranian missile and rocket that hit at a residential rocket. you can see a lot of people carthage and the emergency

services there. also, the security forces. -- you can see a lot of people gathered there. local people in shelters when the siren is a fair sounded are now back on the street and i wanted to pay you some of the pictures that we got overnight of those strikes -- map play you some of the pictures. take a look at this. you can see as those missiles came in. the israeli military says it's been intercepting missiles through the night. we know that there are a number of defence systems in operation. there is also the third missile defence system and david's sling arrow. in iran itself, explosions have been heard just outside tehran and several blast also heard at the city's airport.
8:06 am
iran's raids are in response to israel's attack on iranian nuclear and military targets early on friday. iran says 78 people were killed and 320 injured in israel's initial attacks. our middle east correspondent hugo bachega is in jerusalem and told me about what happened overnight and during the dawn hours. it was a very long night of attacks with sirens sounding across the country. earlier this morning, sirens sounded again in parts of israel. there were lowly large explosions here in jerusalem as the country's air defence systems try to intercept those missiles that had been fired by iran. a residential area in a city south of tel aviv was hit and the authorities are saying this morning that since the beginning of these iranian attacks, at least three people have been killed. this is the iranian response following there is a large scale israeli
8:07 am
attacks, targeting key nuclear and military facilities, also killing some of the country's most senior military officials and scientists. there is a state of emergency here in israel. obviously, the authorities are urging the public to stay alert, to follow instructions because they believe that these attacks are likely to continue. today, there have been reports of more israeli attacks in iran, reports of explosions in it to run, the capital, with an airport are being hit. -- in tehran. an official saying that at least 70 people have been killed as a result of these israeli attacks. the israeli campaign continues and i think the authorities are expecting more iranian attacks in response to these israeli strikes. on human level, just explain what happens when those
8:08 am
go off. -- those sirens go off. in many parts of the country people only have seconds to seek shelter and there is a very sophisticated air defence system in place, but i think we are seeing the iranians strategy, to fire dozens if not hundreds of missiles at the same time with the intention of trying to overwhelm the country's systems and some of those missiles do end up penetrating the multiple layers of protection is that the israeli military has. so every time the israeli military identifies that missiles and drones have been launched, not only by a run but also by other groups in the region like hezbollah -- by national nash not only by ryan but by other
8:09 am
groups in the region like hezbollah. the israeli military tries to intercept those missiles and drones. the is saying that they are continuous strikes on iran. are you getting any sense from the people that you are talking to you about how long this operation it may go on a four? it was interesting that we had yesterday from a number of male sweater and military officials and prime minister benjamin netanyahu, celebrating what they thought was a sexual operation against iran and they were also given education -- meant a successful operation against iran. it was also interesting that last night, the israeli prime minister released a video message in which he actually when you people to rise up against the iranian leadership. what are the israelis have been saying is that the goal of this operation is to damage iran's
8:10 am
nuclear programme and nuclear facilities, but i think the suggestion is that given the scale of these attacks, there is another goal which is to topple the regime in iran. the iranian leader ayatollah khamenei says israel has "launched a war" and will suffer heavy blows in return. last night there was an emergency session in the last three minutes, reuters news agency saying that the iranians strikes will continue. this conversation will not end with last night's limited actions and iran strikes will continue and this action will be very painful and regrettable for the aggressors. that is the iranians news agency, citing an unnamed official, saying that they were citing senior military
8:11 am
officials. that is coming in on the reuters news agency. last night, there was an emergency session at the united nations security council. and despite washington's efforts to distance the us from any involvement in israel's strikes, iran's ambassador to the un accused the us of complicity. here's is some of what he had to say at the session a few hours ago. the united states' complicity in this terrorist attack is beyond doubt. officials of the united states have expressly and brazenly confessed the wilful aid and assistance in the crimes and gross violation that the israeli regime committed as of last night, including the deliberate transfer of arms. we will not forget that our people lost their lives as a result of the israeli
8:12 am
attacks with american weapons. these actions amount to a declaration of war. israel's ambassador to the un, danny danon, also accuses iran of intending to destroy israel. we know our enemies. we know their ideology. and when a regime builds ballistic missiles, enriches uranium to weapons grade, and openly declares its intent to destroy us, we believe them. we take them at their word. and we take action before it is too late. and there was this stark warning from the us representative at the security council meeting. no government, proxy or independent actor should target american citizens, american bases or other american infrastructure in the region. the consequences for iran would be dire.
8:13 am
developments on the us reaction from washington. washington's position on this matter has been evolving in the past 24 hours. now we're waking up to finding president trump more openly embracing this attack on the israelis. in a series of interviews with american media today, president trump was calling this attack an excellent attack. and he also praised the great american equipment that the israelis are using now. at the same time, president trump seems to be believing that this attack that the iranians have suffered is going to help pressuring the iranians to deliver this nuclear deal that he's been looking for. he warned the iranians that
8:14 am
if they do not agree to give up its nuclear weapon, that they will face even more brutal attacks by the israelis. i mean, americans have their hands full already with the gaza conflict, which president trump has promised to free all the hostages there. and now he's at the risk of being dragged into yet another conflict, which will be very difficult for him to resolve. and, you know, he came to power as a peacemaker, as a deal maker. a reminder we have a live page running continuously at the moment with the very latest. the latest post from our middle east correspondent, talking about how this could be part of a prolonged military campaign. you can read all about that on the bbc news website and app. we will return to the middle east later. first, let's take a look at some of the day and's other news.
8:15 am
a team of boeing experts has flown out to offer assistance to the investigation into a plane crash in the indian city of ahmedabad that killed more than 240 people. these are the live pictures from this scene. you can see the wreckage of the plane. the country's aviation minister said a black box flight recording has been recovered from the site. meanwhile, work to identify those killed is continuing. let's speak to our correspondent arunoday mukharji. as we mentioned above wing, flying out so focused into what caused that catastrophic incident. catastrophic is the word and i have been seeing a lot of activity happening behind me where the crash site is and this is the closest that i can get to the point of barricades to prevent anyone from disturbing officials as this is a active investigation site. this is why we are seeing a series of police cars, vans,
8:16 am
as well as excavators that we can see in the distance trying to dig through debris in targeted areas, trying to get abuses of information that can help them piece together what happened to -- pieces of information. i've also been hearing loud noises of emissions, and exactly sure what is happening but to give you a sense of the scene hit -- loud noises of machines. they have been able to gather the black box, the civil aviation minister. they will be able to ascertain what happened in the cockpit, they must what happened, ascertain the kind of mechanism is that watts were used. was were the statistics recorded in terms of the gadget that were there. that will help them understand and paint a scenario of what could have happened. apart from that, why this is important, because according do a manual of the investigation carried out by the aircraft accident
8:17 am
investigation bureau, for the first three days, they have to make sure they have got into as many breaches attract pieces of information which is very important. it is excruciatingly hot, it is going to be crossing a 40 degrees. it is under very difficult circumstances that this work is being carried out so they have to get to all those pieces of evidence which is perishable and have a longevity because they need to preserve that to ensure they can aid in the investigations as they gather momentum. of course, there is an agonising wait for the families and relatives of those who lost their lives to actually identify them because of the sheer veracity of that fireball. dna is being used to identify the victims. very tragic scenes since this incident took place at the hospital, just a few calamities on that side where i spent a
8:18 am
considerable amount of time yesterday talking to families as well -- just a few kilometres. some of the families had a shorter wait because they could identify the body of the facial recognition is the majority of the bodies unfortunately and tragically, many of them are charred beyond recognition, as has as it is to say this. that is the reality facing a lot of medical professionals. therefore, this is a very important to employ so that families can establish that connections with the bodies and actually clean -- claim them. it will be aware before they can get to these bodies and that is what is making it excruciatingly difficult. very difficult circumstances, very hot here in ahmedabad so all of this is paying out and adding to the trauma and worries and concerns of all the family who continue to be gathered in large numbers add to that hospital. as
8:19 am
always, thank you very much for your reporting there from india. let's return it to the middle east now. we know that sirens have been sounding in israel. this is a live picture in israel. this is the area that a missile hit and we know that a building, a residential building was hit by that missile. there, you can see the damage caused by it. we know that in this particular incident, two people died and around 20 others were injured but the sirens have been sounding across israel. this is the scene at live in a tel aviv. the loud blasts reported there. they were also reported in jerusalem. these are the live pictures from jerusalem. israeli media say that three people have been killed and
8:20 am
dozens have been wounded since the iranian counter attacks began. we know that the idf are saying that they have been carrying out further strikes on iran after that original unprecedented air assault on iranian nuclear and military sites. noga tarnopolsky is a reporter with two decades experience covering israel and the middle east. she said these strikes will have a profound effect on the people of israel. i think it's going to have a very significant effect. israel is a society still in trauma from what happened on october 7th, 2023, and the fact that the nation failed to protect its borders and its citizens and those images from back in 2023 of, you know, a granny being pulled out
8:21 am
of bed by terrorists in her nightie. those have really stayed with israelis. and i think until the israeli hostages are rescued, they will be part of the israeli experience. so what did we see this morning? uh, a granny killed in her own bed by an iranian missile, a baby, two-month-old being rescued by a police officer. these images are having a very major effect in israel. in addition, simply to the fact that it's three civilians killed in just the first 12 hours or so of an iranian retaliation to israel. and israelis are exhausted and have very little faith in their leadership right now. how much concern is there that this could be not just something over a couple of days, but this could go on for a lot longer? the concern is huge, especially because the prime minister has almost promised that, saying that this
8:22 am
operation was created was conceived to last for two weeks, and again for israelis with kids at home in the summer, the idea of again being stuck for weeks on end with no school, with children crying in bomb shelters. you know, you can say that israelis are lucky to have these air raid sirens and the whole system. and it's true, israelis are. nonetheless, it's a very bad time to be an israeli. it's a very fragile moment for israeli society. and i think that to the extent that netanyahu hoped that this security operation could also benefit him politically and might kind of reburnish his credentials as israel's mr security, i think it's a very big risk. he says that he had to act because he felt that iran was developing a nuclear bomb. how does that affect people in israel? is there a day-to-day concern about the nuclear capabilities of iran? that's such a great question,
8:23 am
because prime minister netanyahu has sort of been polishing up this question of iran as an existential threat to israel for three decades now. and so, israelis are well trained in it, and they know what iran is doing, and they know the danger that it poses. that said, except with very, very few rare exceptions, the iranian threat has not been a matter of day to day. concern for israelis, hasn't been something that has felt like a threat in people's daily lives here. so prime minister netanyahu has something of a the boy who cried wolf problem now. he has talked so much about iran that israelis are already beginning to ask themselves, why wasn't he able to contain iran?
8:24 am
if he's been aware of this threat for 30 years, what brought us to this point in which he just announced to us that iran is on the verge of producing nine... he said nine atomic bombs. that's a quote, the israeli army has said that iran actually is on the threshold of being able to produce 15 nuclear armaments. so we don't know exactly, but it's a gamble. israelis are aware, but i wouldn't say that automatically kind of puts them in a ra camp if this war drags on or causes major damage to israel diplomatically, morally or domestically. let me take you to live pictures in essential israel. two people have died when an israeli missile hits -- man and a radio missile hit a residential -- and it is... an iranian missile. we know that the 20 other people were
8:25 am
injured. also a three-month-old baby was pulled out of the wreckage by a fire chief at the scene, talking about how he handed it over to a police officer and then started lifting out other family members. also just hearing that the israeli army says that it has struck around's defence -- iran's defence arrays, strike on iran's missile launchers. just coming in. also state media in a run, reported by the afp news agency in the past few moments -- iran, that to iran generals were killed in the missile attack. a lot of developments. we did know that the idf was targeting sites in iran. again, state media
8:26 am
reported that two of generals were killed in

hello i'm nicky schiller. this is bbc news with continuing coverage of the middle east conflict. israel and iran have attacked each other with missiles and air strikes for a second day. the breaking news in the last couple of moments, we have had a statement from the israeli military. it is saying it is striking dozens of missile launchers in iran after announcing it had targeted air defences with a wave of strikes in the tehran area overnight. we had had reports from iran of blasts being heard in the tehran area. this statement has just come in from the israeli air force. it says, it continued striking dozens of surface to
