with a huge military parade in the capital. rally organisers say it's a national day of defiance against attacks on civil rights. they call it no kings day. they say they support democracy, they are against what they call the authoritarian actions of the trump administration and protesters are calling for mr trump to be dethroned because they compare his actions to the actions of a king and not a democratically elected president. the washington parade marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the us army and is taking place on president trump's birthday. the israeli military says the air force is carrying out extensive strikes in various areas of iran. in a statement, iran's ministry of oil said that two major gas fields in southern iran have been attacked by israel.

russia also signalled its willingness to resume talks with ukraine later this month. the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said the air strikes on iran had the clear support of donald trump in a video message addressed to the us president on his birthday. i want to start by wishing a double happy birthday. first, happy birthday to you, president donald j trump. you've been an extraordinary leader, decisive, courageous, clear vision, clear action. you have done great things for us and you've been an extraordinary friend to the jewish state and to me personally. we've known each other for many years and we appreciate what you're doing now, helping protect israeli lives against the criminal regime in iran. i want to wish also a 250th happy birthday to the american army, the men and women of the armed services in the united states who have protected freedom for two and a half centuries.
9:05 pm
we would not have a free world without you. thank you, on behalf of free peoples everywhere. today, israel is defending freedom in the middle east and beyond. we are doing so against a tyrannical and radical iranian regime that wants to build atomic bombs to destroy us. it wants to build ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, to be able to threaten anyone and everywhere in the world. by defending ourselves, we are also defending others. we are defending our arab neighbours, our arab friends in peace, we are defending europe, we are helping defend also the united states, which helps us all the time. benjamin netanyahu speaking earlier. let's get this report from lucy williamson. israel says iran fired 200 missiles yesterday. this is what one of those missiles can do. this morning, bomb disposal

teams scoured the wreckage of a residential complex near tel aviv. some here said it reminded them of gaza. people have been coming back here today picking through the damage. they say this destruction is all part of israel's long conflict with its regional enemies. but it is also evidence of what changed here yesterday, as missiles slammed into central israel, that this is not just another limited confrontation - it's a war. last night, as we sheltered in a stairwell in tel aviv, our camera captured this footage of missiles slipping through israel's air defences. first, one on the left, then another to the right, which hit a residential building. footage of the damage quickly appearing on social media. today we saw what happened inside. this video was filmed by a resident inside his apartment
9:07 pm
moments after it was hit. erez was trapped for 40 minutes with his ukrainian wife anastasia, who he said had come here to escape the war in ukraine. all of a sudden i hear a huge explosion and a blast coming through the door, like a flame, like a real explosion. the next thing i know, there is a lot of dust and smoke coming into the house. now suffering from smoke inhalation, his message to israel's prime ministers was keep going. they want to destroy us. and if they have nuclear weapons and they don't care about hitting civilians, the next time it would be a nuclear missile. so if hitting our apartment and losing everything we have from this blast will mean that we will make them not have nuclear missiles, so be it. iranian media says 60 people were killed overnight in an israeli strike on this building in tehran. among the dead, 20 children.
9:08 pm
in a nearby home, one resident said an explosion threw him up against the ceiling. others called for a tougher response. translation: we want a firm response that holds the dignity of iranians. if they hit us once, iran should hit them a hundred times. this war began when israel launched hundreds of air strikes across iran. tehran has fought a long shadow war against israel's existence, but open conflict risks escalation. iran is now threatening those who help defend israel too. lucy williamson, bbc news, tel aviv. just to say, we are waiting to hear from authorities in minnesota about the shooting of a politician earlier. we can go to icknow get various latest. boulter was a 51 aged male, brown hair, brown eyes. i know
9:09 pm
this name has been reported in the media and we confirm he is a person of interest that we are looking to locate in relation to this. at this time, we would ask the public if you see him to call 911. do not approach him. you should consider him armed and dangerous and you should call 911 immediately with the information. he was seen last this morning wearing a light-coloured cowboy hat that you can see up here in the clothing that with a dark coloured long-sleeved shirt and light pants. if you have any tips about the whereabouts of any information that would be helpful, call the local police department of call our tip line on this number. or e-mail us. we still don't know if

additional people are involved, if this individual, there may be other people with him and we would like to speak to anybody that may have had contact with him at any point in time so please connect with us, even if it has been some time ago today, so we can follow up and continue to work together to keep our communities safe. as the commissioner noted, we will take questions at the end, but again, we are seeking the assistance of the public in locating him and are going to continue to say there are hundreds of law enforcement officers working on this right now, for the partners you see up here, they from brooklyn part, the state patrol, the fbi, the atf, a myriad of partners working to try and locate this individual. i turn now to the mayor who will answer questions. i am aware of the city of brooklyn park. i
9:11 pm
want to extend my prayers to the horton family. there will come a time down the road for healing within us as a community but right now what is needed is coming words and rhetoric. we need to listen to the facts from credible sources like law enforcement but also resist spreading misinformation. and again, asking folks to listen to law enforcement in general went law enforcement has those specific tasks. in brooklyn park and our surrounding communities, we are very much a family. the hoffman and horton families are very much our family. our prayers continuously go out to them. it is very much a tab us to come together as a community and as a family. i think people need to see it that way. i want to thank the law enforcement and the commissioner and the fbi,
9:12 pm
local law enforcement, we are seeing a tonne of local enforcement and county enforcement supporting our city overall and we want to thank them for doing that. they are dedicated to keep us safe and secure injustice. i would say to support them again. if you have information, please share it and please look and listen for valid information and share that. there will be a time to come together and i think specifically for the city of brooklyn park and within our area there will be a time where we come together and work through what we are going through now, as a community. but i want to say this. this individual did this to instill fear into our community but they also wanted to create a singular point of view. when i listed all of that law enforcement coming together, that was really us as a state, as a community, from all different walks of life, coming together to work on what is
9:13 pm
happening. and i received calls from folks across the states, from all different ethnicities and communities as well with an outpouring of support so want people to understand that as a city, but as a state, as a community, we are very much going to come together, we are going to see this through. and we are all going to work together to figure out this. i want to thank our law enforcement and i want to turn over to the mayor of champlin park. good afternoon. i am the mayor of champlin. on behalf of the city of champlin, our police department and city council i want to extend a heartfelt thoughts and prayers to senator john hoffman and representative melissa hortman and their families. we are deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence and our hearts are with all of
9:14 pm
those that have been affected. our police department is working in a close partnership with state and local agencies to pursue this active investigation. we are and globally grateful for their swift and responsible, professional response and further collaboration and commitment of every officer involved. we ask everyone to stay attentive, report anything that feels concerning and most of all continue to show kai bess, respect, and care for one another, this is how we move together. thank you for being care and again i think mayor winston said it well that hoffman family and the hopman family are very much part of our communities, part of the fabric of our communities, and we really wish the families of the best. thank you. we can take a few questions. introduce yourself and the media
9:15 pm
organisation. the question was do we have an update on senator hoffman's condition. we don't have at this time last we have is that he was out of surgery and in a stable condition but he experienced significant injuries. you are watching a news conference here on bbc news. authorities are updating a somewhat has happened, the killing of minnesota state representative melissa hortman and her husband, as well as the shooting of state senator john hoffman and his wife. these shootings being described as politically motivated shootings overnight. authorities taking questions from journalists there in minnesota. they have also talked about a person of interest they have identified.
9:16 pm
based on reports that he owned a security company. we will explore all of that. we are aware of the connections that you reference in the team will be dissecting that between the investigators and police departments and all the state and federal partners that are working on this. certainly, the individual will have familiarity, if that is the line of work he is in. is that photo from today? that photo is from today. the question is whether photo is from, it is from a business location. we believe, as noted, we believe he was still in a he was in the 20s area and we are continuing to work and follow up on that. we believe he is working to potentially flee the area and so that is why we are sharing that information now, so we can
9:17 pm
safely apprehend him. inaudible. the question is i'll be in contact with tsa? we have been in contact with all of the federal authorities relevant to this investigation. inaudible.. this was this morning when this was taken. in the city of minneapolis. that is all we can share as we were to follow up on that. inaudible. the question is is their surveillance camera? do have various video from different locations, i don't want to get into specifics that there is video and take -- obtained by the investigators. inaudible. we can, the question is can we
9:18 pm
talk about some of the other locations. because our teams are active, it is part of active investigation, i cannot talk about the specifics. but the two locations we noted in minneapolis and green isle, they are related to this investigation and the follow up the teams are doing. inaudible. at this point in time, the question was is the manifesto in the information we have received, other motivations? we are working diligently on that, there are certainly some medications within that but there is not specifics enough. this is a very active and fluid investigation. throughout the day, as you have been waiting and teams have been working out in the field, they have been gathering more documents and information so it would be premature for me at this point
9:19 pm
to say exactly what the motivation might be from his writings but we will be continuing to work on that and provide that information when we are able. inaudible. the question is do they each other in any capacity? we are still exploring that. there is certainly some overlap with some, you know, public meetings, i will say, with senator hoffman and the individual but we don't know the relationship whether they actually knew each other. there you are, that is life were minnesota, the news conference from authorities just describing first of all, what happened to minnesota state representative melissa hortman and her husband in the early hours of saturday morning. shot dead. and then the shooting of state senator john hoffman and
9:20 pm
his wife, wounded in what is being described as politically motivated shootings. the authorities there describing a person of interest, the suspect they have named, they believe this suspect was dressed in a manner to appear like a police officer and even has a car that had police markings on it. so, they have released the name of a suspect and appealed for more information, vance luther boelter, and they have issued a lot of detail about one particular individual, 57-year-old white man who works for a security firm. let's speak to our correspondent, anna, thanks for being with us, i much or how much you were able to hear. but the shock that this appalling event must be generating there in minnesota but also the whole united states. yes, it is shocking. especially minnesota,
9:21 pm
which likes to pride itself on comedy when it comes to politics, even as the conversations, the tenor of political language has deteriorated lately in the united states. but minnesotans take pride or took pride in being different. so this especially hard for minnesota. now, what has been the consequence of these events for what has happening today? we know about these widespread no kings protest, timed to coincide with that huge military rallying washington in a couple of hours' time, marking 250 years of the us army, but also the 79th birthday of donald trump. right. well, in minnesota, they have urged people, the governor and the police, not to attend. it seems there were pamphlets
9:22 pm
about the rally in the suspect's suv, so i don't how well attended it was but i think it's likely that a lot of people did not go to the rally in minnesota. governor walz has called this politically motivated, so there is a real fear of danger for people taking part in pedicle events as well? yes, i think across the nation, some people have said, including some democratic officials who planned to go to these rallies, you know, step back and decided not to. and as far as the investigation is concerned, and the search for this one individual, how much detail as the police released? well, we know he is 57 years old, that he was involved in a security firm and other things.
9:23 pm
and that there is a huge manhunt for him, not only with a local and state police but the fbi, the ast and other federal agents. more widely, with what is happening today, you are a washington correspondent, how much of a big deal is what is going on in washington and a couple of hours' time? the biggest military parade for decades. right, and that is not an american tradition. you know. in the united states, it is considered more of a tradition, and i know britain and other democracies have military parades but in the us it is not a tradition and hear americans consider it more autocratic governments have. is that feeling on the democratic side all have concerns being expressed by republicans as well? the republicans are very
9:24 pm
loyal to donald trump. so they may feel one way but not say it. but i think some republicans have expressed a little bit like we wish he wouldn't do it. and of course, you know, there are many elections in the united states, including the presidential elections, it is decided by an independent voter, and an increasing number of voters who don't consider themselves democrats or republicans, and i haven't seen polls that i would venture a guess that independence would also shy away from supporting a military parade. anna, while you are speaking, we are showing various cities across the us, absolutely full of people out demonstrating already, these so-called no kings protests. explain the reasoning behind them, if you will. well, there are people who are very angry at tramp policies. and, you
9:25 pm
know, democrats rank and file democrats have also been angry at democratic leaders because i don't think they are doing enough to push back, so they are venting their anger at these rallies. and before the rallies, there were protests and most notably in los angeles, against immigration policy. so, you know, this is, those were sporadic and unplanned but this is more planned rally. but i don't think it is the end of the rallies. anna, we must read -- leave it there. talk about the rallies against donald trump and talk about what is going to happen in washington, that big military parade also marking donald trump is back birthday and a 250th anniversary of the us army, but these are the protests that we can look at
9:30 pm
this is bbc news, the headlines... israel's prime minister has threatened to hit "every target" of what he called the ayatollah's regime in iran. the israeli military says the air force is carrying out "extensive strikes in various areas of iran" - iranian media reports that its defence network is activating. a huge manhunt is under way in minnesota after a state lawmaker and her husband are shot dead in their home. investigators are looking for a man in his 50s, who is from minnesota. authorities say the attack appears to be a "politically motivated assassination". thousands of people have gathered in cities across the us to join protests against president donald trump,
9:31 pm
hours ahead of his military parade in washington dc. the demonstrations organised by a group called "no kings" was billed as a nationwide day of defiance of his policies. we have live shots we can see above the skies of israel. this is tel aviv. in the last few minutes we have seen lights in the sky indicative of israel's iron dome system activating to stop some kind of missiles from iran. the latest lines coming through from both sides. iran says it is launching missiles against israel, that's according to iranian state media. several missiles have been seen over jerusalem according to a witness on reuters. and air raid sirens have been sounding in israel in
9:32 pm
haifa. iran says its offensive operation against israel includes missiles and drone strikes and that appears to be confirmed by what has been seen in the skies above jerusalem in the last few minutes. we will keep showing you new developments in the skies on this third night of strikes by israel on iran. the idf says it has identified new missiles launched from iran and it has ordered residents to enter a protected space. the idf adds it is continuing to strike military targets in tehran while working to intercept the projectiles. iran state tv 1's 100 missiles have been launched towards israel. fabian hinz is a research fellow for missile technologies and uavs at the iiss. earlier, he gave us his thoughts on what's been going on between israel and iran over the last few days. i think what we are seeing is
9:33 pm
the beginning of a campaign where israel first tries to hit the most time sensitive, time critical targets, including the leadership of the iranian military, and has been tremendously successful at killing a high number of high-ranking military officials as well as nuclear scientists. other targets included air defence systems and missile launch capabilities and the natanz nuclear facility. there have been strikes at the nuclear programme and i think we'll see this campaign continue for a while from the israeli side. from the iranian side we are seeing attempts to retaliate, so the iranian military strategy has always been to try to deter attacks like these with the threat of credible retaliation. they have been able to fire a substantial number of ballistic missiles but probably not quite the number they wanted to fire to overcome the israeli defences. as you member last year, we already had an exchange of fire between the two sides and now we are seeing a bit of shift in strategy by the iranians, moving away from hitting remote military targets like airbases, to urban population centres
9:34 pm
which can cause much more damage to civilian structures and people. i wonder what you think from what we had from donald trump in a statement in the last hour talking about his conversation with president putin. he talked about the iran israel conflict and said president putin feels as i do that this war in israel, iran, should end. i think this is a very deliberate attempt by the russians to gain some diplomatic leverage by offering themselves as a mediator, as someone with influence over decision-making in tehran. of course, when you think about the conflict between iran and israel, these are arch enemies, and for the regime in tehran this is a question of survival. for the elite in tehran this is a question of personal survival, when you see how many high-ranking military personnel have been killed. i think there is a chance they might play a role but still tehran will have an independent course and i don't think the russian influence will be decisive in
9:35 pm
that. when you look at what israel is trying to hit, what facility does it have to hit nuclear facilities for example that our deep underground? what we seeing now is israel has been tremendously successful when it comes to eliminating iranian air defences. they have only taken the most sophisticated iranian air defences systems, and they have degraded the rest of the iranian defence capability, a mixture of russian systems, iranian made systems and old western systems from the times of the shah. most fighter jets are now using standard weapons. they can operate freely over iranian airspace. they have the capability to hit a lot of targets but still there are a few facilities, the fordow enrichment site is one of them, buried so deeply underground, that the israeli weapons we know to be in their arsenal are not sufficient to destroy the
9:36 pm
facility. they can still cause damage, bombing entrances and bombing the electricity supply and infrastructure, that is possible, but they can't completely destroy these facilities. however, there are potentially other ways of doing that, sabotage missions and also the possibility they could send special forces. this would be quite risky to do in enemy territory, based on small actions like they did in syria. doing it in iran would be tremendously more challenging but there have been press reports that this is at least one of the options israel is looking at. iran has promised continued retaliation. how robust is the iron dome system which protects israel? israel has a layered defence system against aerial threats, including ballistic missiles. the iron dome is lower layer, basically designed to counter short range auxiliary rockets, the kind of threat emanating from gaza and lebanon. then you have layers two and three, for
9:37 pm
longer range missiles. you can also move us warships into the region that have very sufficient and sophisticated anti-missile defence capabilities. these facilities were quite well, better than many many had predicted, but not 100%, so there will always be a few missiles getting through this defensive system. there's also a question of arsenal attack. how many intercepting missiles to have, and can they be depleted? do the iranians have more ballistic missiles than israel has interceptor missiles pasta these are important questions on both sides keep their stockpile numbers are secretive for this reason, so their enemy can't plan war more efficiently. we will have to see how well it fares. of course, israel is also doing offensive actions against the iranian missile programme and in order to strike these
9:38 pm
systems before they are even launched. that was a weapons expert. reports of missiles hitting israel in the last few minutes. lights have been seen above the skies in jerusalem. we can see if we can speak to ione wells, the bbc correspondent in jerusalem. there are reports of strikes there. what can you tell us? that's right, in the last couple of minutes we heard emergency alerts here in jerusalem, meaning israel is expecting further retaliatory attacks here. we have seen some indications of that in the sky both here in jerusalem and also in tel aviv from colleagues there, although israel has said most have been intercepted. iran have confirmed they have struck israel again this evening with a combination of drones and missiles. we have heard strong rhetoric from both sides this evening too. israel's prime minister has had very clearly that tehran will
9:39 pm
in his words, burn if iran fires more missiles towards israel. he has also said that israel will soon have fighter jets in the sky over tehran and they will be hitting all major targets of the ayatollah regime. that is significant because firstly it shows a certain confidence from the israeli side after they were quite clear they feel they have severely impacted iran's defence capabilities with some strikes earlier today, in the last 24 hours. it's also significant because it suggests as many have speculated that this isn't just about trying to target iran's nuclear capacity but also trying to target the regime itself. iran has also promised further responses this evening. it also said, it has issued a warning to the us, the uk and france, saying if those nations were to support israel in defending against further iranian attacks that it may
9:40 pm
target those nations up to the military bases in the region. further strong rhetoric from both sides and strikes continuing this evening and it's expected into the early hours of tomorrow morning. israel is protected by its well-known iron dome system. how infallible is it? some still get through, don't they? that's right. as we saw last night in tel aviv, there were some getting through that caused damage to some buildings there, but as you say, the large majority of strikes that have been shot into israeli territory have so far been intercepted or fallen short. but as you say there is obviously a limit to that defence capability. at the moment israel seems confident that most of them are being intercepted but we saw examples yesterday of some of those getting through and causing damage to buildings in tel aviv. the latest figures we have are that three people were
9:41 pm
killed in israel with 76 wounded by iranian strikes. iran has been reporting 60 people were killed there, including 20 children, from strikes on a residential building. israel has also announced it has killed 20 military commanders in iran as well as nine nuclear scientists as part of their strikes. seeing some of the reports coming in, israel's fire and rescue saying they are responding to several incidents in the coastal and northern areas of the country. presumably this is quite widespread with 100 missiles claimed to have been launched by iran, and this is not just on the two major cities. that's right. as i mentioned, the emergency alert has only come in in the last couple of minutes so information is still coming in. we will update when we get more information but there are certainly reports and simon is being reported in the north of the country as well as here in jerusalem and in tel
9:42 pm
aviv. it looks like these alerts are being issued in all areas of the country this evening. ione wells, thank you. we are just hearing some of the diplomatic response as well, we have heard in the last few minutes that the british foreign minister, david lammy, has spoken to israel's gideon saar, expressing concerns for civilians in israel and reiterating the uk's call for de-escalation. i assume that call is coming from many of his royal's allies. that's right, there have been numerous diplomatic calls in the last 24 hours with, for example, the uk and other nations speaking to her counterparts in israel and iran as well, urging calm and de-escalation. but it doesn't seem either side is taking that on board. we know that there were going to be further diplomatic talks scheduled tomorrow between the us and iran over a possible deal but those have been cancelled.
9:43 pm
diplomatic efforts have somewhat been made to look more distant after the initial attacks that took place by israel on friday night against military and nuclear targets, that have now prompted this back and forth attack between both nations, making diplomatic efforts look more distant to finding a solution. just to explain to people who are with us, we are looking at a shot of haifa because we understand the sound of sirens has been overwhelmed by the rumble of blasts and explosions in the night sky above haifa. the israeli military saying it identified missiles launched from iran towards israel and systems were operating to intercept them. israel has been hitting iran for a second day on saturday, now going into another night. what sort of targets do we think iran is aiming for in its strikes on
9:44 pm
israel? certainly iran has talked about military targets as well here. we are hearing from israel that they are still continuing to target military, nuclear and also targets in the regime in iran too. it's not clear yet exactly what strikes this evening have been targeted at. we have only had the alerts in the last couple of minutes and there is still information coming through but we are seeing reports of potential strikes towards haifa, a coastal city north of tel aviv on the israeli coast. these are early reports, we are still gathering information at this time to understand more about what may have happened there. if you just joining us on bbc news it appears that missiles have been launched at israel from iran. iran claiming 100 missiles launched towards israel, and we are seeing the
9:45 pm
skies above many israeli cities lit up, the latest, haifa and tel aviv, we are hearing according to iranian state tv, described as the main targets. state television in iran announcing that iran has started a second wave of its so-called true promise operation three on israel tonight. state tv saying that this time the attack is a combination of drones and, in its words, more than 100 missiles with haifa and tel aviv being the main targets tonight. we can see in some of the live shots we have been looking at, at times these guys have been lighting up, the iron dome system getting into action to intercept the missiles which iranian state tv says will disrupt the sleep of residents in israel. what's it like for people and how much has life
9:46 pm
been disrupted by what has been going on since the early hours of friday morning? life has been disrupted in both israel and iran since events unfolded on friday. we have heard from residents in both countries, especially those in areas where successful strikes have taken place, that they are fearful for what comes next. some have been directly affected, either through losing relatives or through having buildings where they have lived, where their belongings are, damaged. there is fear from citizens in both countries at the moment. here in jerusalem there was a mood this morning of people being more wary about going outside, the streets around where i am in jerusalem were pretty much empty. they would usually be bustling on a saturday, people going out to shops, two stores, to get food i'm going to the old city, which was closed here
9:47 pm
in jerusalem today. that's because there have been these responses, an alert issued essentially, telling people not to go out for nonessential reasons, nonessential workplaces, shops for example, are still closed. schools are ordered to remain closed for now unless the alert lifts. at the moment, as we speak right now, there is an alert in place for people to be either in a shelter or near a shelter. life has certainly been very different to how it might look on an ordinary weekend in jerusalem and i think it's safe to say people across different parts of israel and in iran as well are cautious about what might happen next and how they might be impacted. how much access to people having a basis to shelters and how widespread are they and how accessible are shelters for israelis? they are pretty widespread. here in jerusalem most people are
9:48 pm
receiving alerts telling them where they can get shelter. it is popular for people to have an app on their phones but also nationwide alerts issued to mobile phones telling them if there is an imminent threat. a lot of major buildings here will have shelters people can get two, of course not necessarily accessible to everybody but the hope of the alerts is to try to give at least a bit of notice for people to get near or even in one if there is an expected attack on the way. if you're just joining us, this is bbc news and we are bringing you continued coverage. iran has launched a new wave of missiles at israel. that comes as israeli air force planes strike targets in tehran. the israel defense forces says it has identified new missiles launched from iran, ordered israelis to enter a protected

space, in its words. the idf and city is continuing to strike military targets in tehran while working to intercept missiles coming from iran. iranian state tv reporting it has launched 100 missiles at israel, the main targets are haifa in the north and tel aviv. we have been hearing this exchange of words between the two, the iranian president threatening a more severe response if israel does not stop and does not stand down, in his words. the strikes, is washington and tehran were due to start talks on iran's nuclear talks on sunday in oman will stop those talks have now been cancelled, that's according to the mediator country, oman itself. we have heard the israel fire and rescue saying they have
9:50 pm
responded to several incidents in coastal and northern areas of the country including falling debris, damage to residential buildings and fires in open spaces. 100 missiles coming from iran to israel. we are promised by iranian state tv, but no calls about casualties received at this stage according to israel's emergency service. state tv saying haifa and tel aviv are the main targets of tonight's retaliatory response from iran. state tv saying this time the attack is a combination of drones and more than 100 missiles. haifa and tel aviv being the main targets tonight. and they say the targets will have their sleep is disrupted. israel has this well-known iron dome defence system. ione wells, alice corresponded in jerusalem is still with us. it

does a lot of heavy lifting, the iron dome system. most missiles are intercepted but some do still get through. that's right. israel has said the majority of missiles so far that have been fired towards israeli territory have either been successfully intercepted or fallen short. there are some that get through. as we saw last night in tel aviv, some got through the iron dome system, landing in tel aviv and causing damage to some buildings in the city there. we had two reports on the israeli side of three people killed, 76 wounded by some of the ram's retaliatory strikes. iran reporting strikes on iran by israel. 60 people have been killed, including 20 children due to a strike on a residential building there. this iron dome is israel's

main... inaudible israel has said it is activating its defence system to try to intercept missiles that are being fired from iran. equally iran has said throughout the day that it has been trying to intercept missiles fired in its direction by israel. however, one concern from the iranian side is that their defence capabilities have been quite severely impacted by israel's strikes. this has been a deliberate tactic from the israeli side, to try to strike at some of their defence capabilities which have been weakened not just in these strikes, since the attacks on friday, but also from attacks back in october. the iranian defence capabilities have been weakened since then, one of the reasons
9:53 pm
people speculate israel may have chosen this time to launch those initial attacks on friday. ione wells in jerusalem, thank you. we can speak to the visiting fellow... inaudible different targets in iran. the iranian officials have already vowed to retaliate but at the same time i think the scope and timing of the attacks are kind of indicative of the actual capabilities and also limits of iran's military arsenal at the moment. because on one hand we

knew for a long time that iran has a stockpile of thousands of missiles and they have on various occasions, especially in the last few months, as tensions were rising between iran and the united states and israel, they have been engaged in basically showcasing these capabilities, unveiling those. now it seems at least that some of the more significant facilities, storing those missiles, have been somehow not realised by israel, not the missiles, but the launchers and so on. and also the fact that israel has been effectively targeted the air defences of iran, especially in the western part of the country, from iran's western borders all the way to tehran, this has made it

more difficult for the iranian military and the irgc, to take these missiles out and launch them effectively. that might be one of the reasons why they chose the night time for these attacks. doctor comic tell us about the effect this is having on people's lives in iran. we have seen scenes of civilian homes being targeted. we have seen a lot of confirmed cases of civilian deaths. we have many people who have just been residing in areas that have been targeted by israel, israeli planes, these are strikes aimed at taking out senior irgc people and irgc commanders. tehran is a very

densely populated city. it is really difficult to imagine that these kinds of strikes are connected. the human toll is increasing and so is the panic among the public. on top of all this we have seen... effective strikes against nuclear facilities but people in central iran are worried about a potential more significant israeli strike to come that would potentially cause nuclear radiation and that would cause a real catastrophe. the concerns are growing. and now today we also saw a change of pattern, i would say, a new phase of israeli strikes compared to yesterday, shifting from targeting individuals and

military sites to energy and economic infrastructure. they targeted parts of the gas field, which is in the border area between iran and qatar. the aim or objective might have been to erode the economic potential of the iranian government, to make it either concede or to push it towards defeat. while you are talking i'd think we can look at the pictures we have been watching, the very latest pictures we have got off the skies above jerusalem with streaks of light being seen in the skies over jerusalem as projectiles descended from iranian attacks, a salvo of missiles being launched towards israel. 100 missiles promised by iranian state tv. iran attacking israel just before midnight local time. people in israel called

to stay in protective spaces and shelters. these pictures from the skies above jerusalem just in the last few minutes. israel's military say more missiles were launched from iran towards israel late on saturday and that it was also attacking military targets in tehran. iranian state tv reporting iran launching missiles and drones at israel. we have also seen lights in the skies above haifa, a city in the north, and tel aviv as well. we are speaking to doctor azizi about the situation in iran. you were talking about the effect of people in iran. what about their perception of the regime and how they have got into this situation, how fragile is the regime right now? that lies actually at the heart of the problem. this is a challenge that the islamic

republic is quite aware of, this kind of public disillusionment towards the government that has been on full display over the past few years. we have had subsequent waves of protests, as we know, and suppression etc. the thing is, for many people in iran, for many iranians, it is a situation of being pressured from both sides, from a government that has been quite authoritarian and also inefficient and not capable of providing basic security in a situation like this. you mentioned israeli civilians being sent to shelters. this is good news, to protect civilians being targeted. we don't have any such thing in iran, even in big cities like tehran. there
10:00 pm
are no shelters for people to go to in situations like this. so this of course has to do with the government. so it is quite fragile but what i can tell is that the more israeli attacks that target civilians, the more these are circulated on social media, there is growing emotion. you can also see this resentment towards the government, a lot of people saying this is about the country, about our national pride. so there is quite a lot of mixed sentiments all over. we cannot really speak of a unified position among the public except for the condemnation of the war and the resentment of being attacked by a foreign country.
