this is bbc news. the headlines: tehran is hit by an intense new wave of israeli missile attacks, with a notorious prison and paramilitary headquarters among the targets. israel has also struck the fordo nuclear site, as the head of the un nuclear watchdog calls for access to the areas bombed by the united states. sirens are heard in israel as iran launched another barrage of missiles earlier this morning, with reports of at least seven hits. and the first-ever

photos, released today, from a powerful new telescope with the largest digital camera, showing the night sky in extraordinary detail. more now on our top story - israel has launched a new attack on "access routes" to iran's fordo nuclear site, a day after it was damaged by us strikes. president trump says those attacks caused "monumental damage" to iran's nuclear sites, while iran has vowed a "decisive response". we're expecting to hear from the uk foreign secretary david lammy shortly, as he's scheduled to give a statement on the middle east in the house of commons and we'll bring you that live. uk house of commons at the moment. bbc verify has been looking at satellite images from iran to see what damage can be seen at nuclear sites targeted. the attack relied on

secrecy, decoys and weapons never used before. the us said it took months of planning and included over 125 planes, a submarine and 14 bunker busting bombs. how much damage has it done? the most crucial location is the underground hugely fortified facility, fordo, where iran has been enriching uranium which could be used in nuclear bombs. high resolution images show six fresh craters, likely the entry points for us munitions. you can see those here. there is no huge blast effect visible because the bombs used aren't designed to detonate on entry but deep underground at the facility. a senior analyst at mckenzie intelligence said that without being able to verify the damage caused, the us dropping three devices onto the same point of impact would be as much of a guarantee of success as possible. he also said the grey dust scattered across the mountainside suggests concrete debris having been blown out by
3:33 pm
the explosions. look over here. we see the craters as well as tunnel entrances, and this is taken on the 22nd of june, after the us strikes. the tunnel entrances appear to have been blocked off with no cratering or impact points. analysts suggest that this may have been an iranian attempt, before the strikes, to try to protect those entrances. this is a schematic plan of fordo from the institute for science and international security. they have based this on documents seized from iran by israel dating to the early 2000s. when you lay that on to the point of impact from the us strikes, you can see that it really closely aligns. an analyst from the thing type -- think tank foundation for democracies, says that the bombs seem to have targeted right above the centrifuge halls below rather than the entrances. thus my other nuclear sites were also hit. images from one show some of
3:34 pm
the damage. and the facility in natanz appears to show at least dust mite craters. it is worth saying that both of those sites have previously been hit by israeli strikes. in the days leading up to the strikes, iran seems to have been taking actions in anticipation. trucks can be seen on images from the 19th and 20th of june, positioned as if they are heading into the fordo underground plant. analysts told us it could have been to build physical barriers inside the complex to contain the detonation. how iran will respond remains to be seen. experts say that right now the only people who know the extent of damage are the iranians, and even they won't know until they have sifted through the rubble. with me is our security correspondent, frank gardner. we are just keeping across the british house of commons because we are waiting for the british foreign secretary, david lammy, to speak and give an assessment of the whole
3:35 pm
situation. we saw in the last hour or so, the white house spokesperson talking about donald trump raising the idea of regime change, which we have seen other republicans pushing against, saying this is a defined mission that the us talked about. are they deliberately sowing confusion or do you think there is a confused position - is it possible to know that? you are dealing with donald trump. it is perfectly possible he hadn't thought of regime change a week ago. remember, he gave that interview to reporters just a few days ago, before the us attack, and he said, how can anybody know if i'm going to attack? i might end i might not. it was clear from that he hadn't even made his mind up yet. i may be wrong. i think we are seeing mission creep. this started out being a very focused thing to take down iran's suspect nuclear enrichment programme. i say suspect because the un nuclear

watchdog, the iaea, the international atomic energy agency, said that there have been secret activities and up to 400 kilograms of highly enriched unaccounted for uranium. we are just showing pictures outside downing street in london, because whilst we are keeping across events in the middle east, it is also the nato summit in the hague, starting officially tomorrow, but you can see that car pulling up because we are expecting the ukrainian leader, president zelensky, to come out of downing street where he has been meeting the uk prime minister, sir keir starmer. let's go to the uk foreign secretary, david lammy. since i last updated the house, the united states has struck three iranians nuclear sites at esfahan, natanz and fordo. the
3:37 pm
defence secretary has said their actions were deliberately limited. britain was not involved in the strikes, just as britain was not involved in israel's operations. britain has long had concerns about iran's nuclear programme. iran can never have the nuclear weapon. the united states has taken action to alleviate that threat. nuclear armed iran would endanger the immediate region and threaten the global community. this is a perilous moment in the middle east. waves of strikes between israel and iran have now lasted for ten days, continuing overnight. i know the whole house will have in their thoughts the many civilians impacted by the fighting. i can confirm today
3:38 pm
this includes one british national injured in israel. we have reached out to offer consular support. iran has consistently failed to reassure the world that it is not pursuing a nuclear weapon. the house will recall prime minister gordon brown calling out iran for perpetrating serial deception over years after exposure of the fortified fordo nuclear site. today, they enriched uranium stockpile is 40 times the limit. iran is enriching at 60%, typically a commercial nuclear reactor like that at sizewell operates with uranium enriched at between three and 5%. iran lacks any civilian justification for this level of nuclear activity, and
3:39 pm
the international atomic energy agency board of governors has declared iran in breach of the nuclear nonproliferation obligations. as we respond to this fast moving situation, our first priority remains the welfare of british nationals in iran and israel, and our staff on the ground - our crisis teams in london in the region have been working round-the-clock, israel has put restrictions on its airspace since friday 13th of june. the british embassy in tel aviv, and the british consulate in jerusalem, are open. all our diplomats remain in place supporting british nationals, and we have bolstered the embassy in tel aviv with a rapid deployment team from the uk. we have worked closely with israeli authorities to prepare flights to evacuate vulnerable british nationals and their dependents. yesterday we launched a booking portal for british nationals. today, as
3:40 pm
soon as it was possible to enter airspace. i can confirm to the house that a royal air force a400 has flown into tel aviv and taken 63 british nationals and their dependents to cyprus, from where they will be brought home this evening. for the flight will follow in the coming days, security allowing. we will prioritise those with greatest need. we will send updates on future flights to all british nationals registered with the foreign office, and i encourage all british nationals are still in israel and the occupied territories to register their presence so they receive our updates. these british nationals should follow instructions from the israeli authorities, international land border crossings to jordan and egypt are open, and commercial
3:41 pm
flights continue to both those countries. teams are on hand to assist british nationals who have crossed the border. in iran, airspace remains closed and there has been a near total internet shutdown. due to the security situation, we took the precautionary step last friday of temporarily withdrawing our staff from iran. the embassy is operating remotely, though our ability to support british nationals still in iran is extremely limited. the house will know that the foreign office has advised against travel to iran since 2019. those seeking to cross iran's land borders should contact the sed over assistance, including additional paperwork. british nationals and the wider region should also closely follow our travel advice. following a us security alert for the

nationals in qatar, out of an abundance of caution, we now recommend that british nationals in qatar shelter in place until further notice alongside our consumer teams, our diplomats are fully engaged in trying to end this crisis. we can and must find a negotiated solution. the window has narrowed, but the risks of further escalation are so great, and the costs so considerable for britain and all in the region, that this is the government's priority. we don't yet know precisely how far the us strikes have set back iran's nuclear programme, but there remains the need for a durable diplomatic solution. strikes cannot destroy the knowledge iran has acquired over several decades, nor any regime ambition to deploy that
3:43 pm
knowledge to build a nuclear weapon. that is why we have been working so intensively with the new us administration to reach a new agreement with iran. iran and president trump's envoy held five rounds of negotiations. britain joined france and germany in seven rounds of engagement with iran as well. even after the israeli strikes, i travelled to washington, meeting in the white house with secretary rubio and secretary wit cough. then sitting opposite the iranian foreign minister in several hours of talks, pushing for iran to accept the diplomatic off ramp. directly after the us strikes, we have been at the heart of a collective drive with partners to get back to negotiations. the prime minister has spoken
3:44 pm
to president trump. i have spoken to marco rubio and the israeli foreign minister. we have both been in touch with european and middle eastern partners. this was why i spoke again to the israeli minister again yesterday. my message for iran was clear - take the off ramp, dial this things down and negotiate with the united states seriously and immediately. the alternatives of an even more destructive and far-reaching conflict which could have far more unpredictable consequences. the situation presents a serious risk to british interests in the region. having moved in additional assets on a precautionary basis, force protection is at its highest levels. be in no doubt, we are prepared to defend our
3:45 pm
personnel, our assets and those of our allies and partners. we are closely monitoring our energy markets and responding to the conflict, and we have been extremely clear with the iranians - any action to blockade the strait of hormuz would be a monumental act of economic self-harm, making a diplomatic solution even harder. we are also maintaining sharp focus on other conflict in the region. first and foremost, the catastrophic plight of the people of gaza, and the ongoing ordeal of the hostages and their loved ones, all fearing that this war leaves them forgotten. today, i met a person who was held in chains by iranians backed terrorists, released from hamas captivity only to discover they had murdered his family. last
3:46 pm
week, israeli defense forces the delete might recover the bodies of two hostages. hamas had been keeping the bodies of killed hostages cruelly from their loved ones. 500,000 palestinians are facing starvation, and hundreds have been killed in recent weeks trying to access, while gaza's hospitals have had to stop services vital for childbirth and emergency surgery. it is appalling and it must finally end. the israeli government must lift age restrictions. hamas must release all the hostages. an immediate ceasefire has never been more urgent. the consequences of the current situation are hard to
3:47 pm
predict. history can offer us no guide after events unprecedented in the region. the government has sought to react quickly to the twists and turns of recent weeks while maintaining focus on where british interests lie. the lasting end to iran's nuclear programme, the de-escalation of tensions, and security for our people across the region, we will continue to persevere with diplomacy. i recommend a statement to the house. the shadow secretary of state. two weeks ago, the iaea produced a report that was dabbing on the iranians regime. iran was not cooperating, breaching its obligations, and had over 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, far beyond any level needed for a civilian nuclear programme. and enough material to create at least nine nuclear
3:48 pm
devices. there are nuclear facilities are buried deep underground to hide the programme, and all this from a despotic, authoritarian regime that represses and tortures its own people. it is committed to the annihilation of israel, the well's only jewish state, and is responsible for so much of the suffering in the region through its sponsorship of terrorist proxies. it is supporting putin in his illegal will against ukraine, and is involved in plots and activities to undermine our national security at home daily. it is for these reasons and many more that the iranians regime must never be allowed to have nuclear weapons. that is why we stand with those working to stop them. as his majesty's opposition, the house will know that we will always put the defence and security of our country first, and that is why we will work constructively with the government to
3:49 pm
secure... we will work with the government when it is doing the right thing but also question and challenge ministers to go further when we believe it is in our interest. it is in that spirit that i put these questions and points to the foreign secretary. first, british nationals and dual nationals continue to be stranded in israel and the middle east due to airspace closures. i've written to the foreign secretary about this matter note the progress today's flight. i want to thank the foreign office for the work they have been doing with many families whom i've been in touch with haswell who have been able to get on that flight today. can the foreign secretary tell us how many british nationals may need to be repatriated because much of what resources are being deployed to support those efforts because mike is their capacity to match the numbers who need to leave? and why does it seem that the us and european countries were ahead of us in operational planning to bring back their citizens because mike the foreign secretary has mentioned the us
3:50 pm
embassy advice and now his given advice to british nationals in qatar today. will there be any further notifications for other british nationals in gcc states? on iran's nuclear programme, the foreign secretary on radio this morning could not say how effective the weekend strikes well, and i understand that will take time to get information. but if more strikes are planned to further degrade iran's nuclear capacities, will the government consider supporting these? the government has not taken a clear position the us and israel, but we have seen reports of the apparent legal advice from the attorney general cautioning against uk involvement. while i appreciate that the foreign secretary cannot comment on any legal advice, does the government have a position on the lawfulness of the strikes, and does he welcomed the ends as well as the means to achieve this? does he share my cynicism about iran's attempt to cloak itself in the un charter, the same one it has undermined with
3:51 pm
its brutality for decades? and can the foreign secretary confirm if the us will be permitted to take action from diego garcia, should future strikes on iran be needed or actions to defend israel because michael does the government think that there are legal barriers to the us in doing so? with heightened tensions in the region, can the foreign secretary give an update on what further steps are being undertaken to safeguard british military assets in the region? and our partners from any unwise military action taken by the iranians regime because mike i say this considering the reports we had a bout of the weekend with the arrest of a suspected iranians by plot targeting our base in cyprus. are we stepping up efforts to protect bases? what steps are being taken across government and with our police, counterterrorism and security services to reassess threat levels because mike can he give assurance on the robust action and disruptions to any iran

backed cults that are under way because mikey mentioned gaza and the fact that we absolutely must work together in terms of ensuring that humanitarian aid gets to people in need of aid. can the foreign secretary update us on what steps he has been taking to engage with israel to get more aid into gaza because mike does he agree that iran must be weakened to end their ability to sponsor hamas and other terrorists in the region? i'm very grateful to the tone and the cooperative context in which the honourable lady has made a remark, and quite rightly, she has a number of questions which i will attempt to answer. let me just begin by saying, fundamentally, we are in agreement that iran and the regime in iran can never have a nuclear weapon. all of our efforts are designed to ensure that that is the
3:53 pm
case. the whole house will understand that this is not just about iran, the region and global security. it is because we have to remain steadfast in our commitment to not see nuclear proliferation. if iran got the nuclear weapon, clearly there would be others in the region that would seek to follow. so it is a sober commitment that really begins 80 years ago that we must see to completion in relation to their ambitions. she asks about the british nationals in israel. there are just over 4000 british nationals that have registered their interest following our appeal last week. we would estimate that somewhere between 15 and 25% of
3:54 pm
them indicate, following the pattern in previous crises in israel and the region, who will take up the offer of british assistance to leave. she knows the airspace has been closed, and so that offer, up until this point, what about getting them to the border. -- was about getting them to the border. i am very pleased that that flight has landed and taken. we hope to work with the israeli government on further flights in the area. my understanding is that there has been a military plane that the americans have put on for their citizens from israel, but she will understand the uniqueness of the relationship that the united states has with america that facilitated that opening up, and i am very pleased that we have been able to garner that same agreement today with
3:55 pm
the israeli government. this is an ongoing and fast moving situation. she has heard what i have advised british nationals in qatar today and, of course, we keep this under close review. there may need to be further updates over the course of the next few days. it was important that i was in washington, dc, sitting with the us administration, and in that meeting with marco rubio and others last week, it was very clear to me that all options were on the table. president trump had those options in front of us. of course, i discussed with them in detail the trip i would be making alongside my french, german and the european high

representative in geneva, and they were keen and hopeful that that might be successful will stop it was not successful. but we continue to press the iranians to take the off ramp and get into those negotiations with the united states and with the e 3 to ensure that they are in compliance. she asks about the legal advice. that must rightly be a matter for the us government in relation to their action. i am pleased that she mentioned the ministerial code. she will know that section 2-13 of the code prevents those of us in government, and she has been in government in the past, discussing legal advice so that government can operate in the appropriate way. i would say to her, this was not our action. we have been clear that we were not involved. she asks also
3:57 pm
whether we had any request from the us government. we did not get such a request, but we were notified before the action took place. she also asks about state threats, and it is right to say that we have thwarted 20 such state threats since 2022 in this country. and she will know, including the highest tier that we have put iran on four national interference, that we take the threats from iran very seriously and we are reviewing and will come forward with legislation in the coming months in relation to the gaps that were found in how we deal with state threats in our country. chair of the select committee, dame emily thornbury. the only way to stop iran from building a nuclear bomb is a deal. the can it be ideal without negotiations, and
3:58 pm
there can't be negotiations without trust. given president trump tore up the first nuclear deal and is acting alongside israel, who attack last week ended the us - iran negotiations for a new nuclear deal, and given that the war aims of this campaign are so unclear, and emboldened netanyahu government is calling for regime change and president trump is hinting at it as well. it can be difficult to see how... studio: emily thornbury there. just to recap, we have been listening to the uk foreign secretary, david lammy, give a statement. he has said that 63 british nationals have been taken from israel, with an evacuation plan continuing. 4000 british nationals estimated to be in israel and he said about a quarter might want to leave. they have been taken to cyprus and they will be brought back after that. it happened today because that is when israeli air space open. he also said that british citizens in qatar should shelter in
3:59 pm
place until further notice. that is the new uk government travel advice. it follows us advice telling people to do the same. david lammy said that was advice given out of an abundance of caution. he then talked about the continuing push for a diplomatic solution to what is going on between iran and israel. ian watson, our political correspondent, was watching. what do you take from that? initially, that the foreign secretary is very keen indeed, and very helpful, i suppose, that there be no repeat attack on iran by the united states. again, he talked about the need for de-escalation, the need for diplomacy. he is walking a very thin political tightrope while not overt it -- not overtly criticising president trump and
4:00 pm
the strikes on iran, whilst emphasising that the uk was not involved and they had been asked for assistance. he emphasised that strikes on their own would not stop iran developing a nuclear capability because they may still have the knowledge to do so, so there needs to be diplomacy. interestingly, he sidestepped some of the questions from the shadow foreign secretary, priti patel, who said if there is any future reaction against iran, would we be supportive of it and allow the us to use our base in diego garcia chris mikey said retrospectively we had not been asked to do any of those things but did not say what would happen in the future. there was a hint of threat to iran as well, saying they should never acquire a nuclear weapon, a long-standing view of british governments, but equally saying if they were to close the strait of hormuz, through which oil will flow to the rest of the world, that would be an act of economic self-harm, and also warned of wider consequences. let's be blunt - as he pointed out, this action
