Henry John Dewenter was born in Peckelsheim, Germany in 1884. Elizabeth Auer was born in Austria in 1889. Both immigrated to the US in 1907. They were married in 1914 in Los Angeles. They purchased land in Southern California, and oil was discovered on the property. They built up an orange ranch north of La Verne, California, now on the National Register of Historic Places (listed as the DeWenter Ranch/DeWenter Mansion). The elder Henry Dewenter passed away in LA in 1954 and Elizabeth passed away in 1962. They had two sons, Henry Adolf Dewenter (1915-1992), and Paul Dewenter (b. 1917).
