it is friday may 8th. it's 5:00 a.m. in the east. we have breaking news from the united kingdom. a stunner of an election. this one was supposed to be close. more than close. like deadlocked. they were expecting overtime here. days to form a governing coalition. no! much closer to a blowout. the incumbent conservative party will remain in power. prime minister david cameron keeping his job. actually in some ways expanding his power. let's go live to erin mclaughlin live in edinburgh. >> reporter: you know many people thought the british prime minister david cameron was going to struggle holding on to downing street. all polls pointing to a hung

parliament. right now, according to some projections, the conservatives stand to gain a majority seats in parliament. shocking many people. prime minister tweeting out a picture of himself as well as his wife samantha in celebration. promising a better future for everyone. >> some people say, in fact i often said there is one opinion poll that counts. that's the one on election day. i'm not sure that has ever been truer than today and tonight. >> reporter: meanwhile, up north, the revolution. scottish national party. the party responsible for the referendum referendum they wanted independence for scotland. they now have 56 seats. the most that party has ever had

in u.k. history was 11 seats. those gains made on the back of the labour opposition party here in the united kingdom. we expect to hear from ed miliband to resign and expecting a victory speech from prime minister david cameron. john. >> a seismic result not the one that was expected. erin mclaughlin, thank you. new england patriots quarterback tom brady doesn't have any reaction to an nfl report concluding he likely knew about footballs being deflated during the afc title game. coy wire joins us live now with the latest. you know he even said there's been only 30 hours since the report came out. i am not ready to react yet. how can he not prepare a statement? he has a team advising him? i'm surprised he did not have a statement. >> i'm with you, christine.

i think a lot of people are as well. he made his first public appearance and first comment since the wells' report was released. he was aware of the deflation of footballs in the afc title game. he was in front of a crowd at salem state university. he said he hasn't had time to digest the deflate gate report. here's exactly what he said christine. >> i don't have really any reaction. our owner commented on it yesterday. it's only been 30 hours. i have not had much time to digest it fully. when i do, i'll let you know how i feel about it. >> is the super bowl tainted? >> what do you guys think? neither do i. >> has this however, detracted from your joy of winning the super bowl? >> absolutely not.

called isis poison online. multiple officials tell cnn that simpson was in private contact with overseas jihadists encourageing some attacks. also learning the fbi did warn police in garland, texas about simpson's interest in the cartoon contest. let's get more from pamela brown. >> reporter: john and christine, james comey met with a small group of reporters and said the fbi actually sent a warning to local authorities in garland, texas, three hours before elton simpson arrived with the accomplice and opened fire. we learned that the fbi sent a picture to local authorities and a possible license plate. this was just a bulletin. the fbi apparently had no idea that elton simpson had left his home here in phoenix, arizona and was driving to dallas in order to launch this attack.

it saw simpson's social media post talking about the event. the concern was he was someone, an extremist they had their eyes on that they had an investigation on tweeting about this. so they alerted authorities. apparently the fbi had a list of people of possible extremists who may want to target the event and elton simpson was part of that list. also director comey talked about the hundreds if not thousands of people in the u.s. following isis online. he says it is a big concern and there are hundreds of investigations into possible extremists. he said it is like finding a needle in a haystack and increasingly that needle is invisible. john and christine. >> pamela, thank you for that. senior commander for al qaeda killed bring a u.s. drone strike. nasser al ansi had become a public face in the terror group.

appearing in high profile videos, including the one taking credit for "charlie hebdo." al ansi his son and six fighters died last month in the port city of makala. the senate has overwhelmingly passed ia bill to give the congress the right to overview any agreement with nuclear. it would give the lawmakers time to decide to disapprove or take no action. if congress disapproves, the president could veto that action. the nsa phone surveillance operation is illegal. that's the finding of a federal appeals court in new york. a three-judge panel says the program exceeds the scope of what congress authorized. let's get more this morning on the story from correspondent michelle kosinski.

>> reporter: john and christine, the federal appeals court re veals the stockpiles of telephone data is illegal under the patriot act. the collection exceeds the scope of the law as intended. the judge wrote the sheer volume of information sought is staggering. the court did not rule it was unconstitutional unconstitutional. they sent it back to the lower court. the section of the patriot act that the government interpreted to collect the phone data expires next month anyway. it is up for review. the patriot act was established in 2001 after september 11th. it was renewed by president bush and president obama. president obama says now it is expiring it should be reformed. there has been legislation proposed and ideas such as this data could be collected, but stored by a third party so the government would not own it and control it.

storms today. meteorologist derek van dam is tracking the forecast for us this morning. derek. >> good morning, john and christine. thursday brought another round of severe weather to the central plain states. this time nine tornadoes were reported. one was actually just north of the denver metro area. the other across portions of kansas andthe dallas ft. worth region. we have a set up of dry and cool air settling in thanks to an upper level disturbance of the western part of the united states. that is bringing warm gulf air ahead of the low pressure system. those systems will collide bringing another possibility of severe storms. this is our high resolution radar imagery. i want to take note across the central portions of oklahoma specifically between oklahoma city and wichita falls. that is where we have a moderate

risk of severe storms today. including strong long trek dangerous tornadoes. back to you. >> derek, thank you. in baltimore the mayor is getting her wish. the justice department is expected to announce it will launch a full-scale investigation into the baltimore police department. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake asked the feds to investigate the patterns and practices of alleged force in her city. attorney general loretta lynch hinted at that thursday at the congressional hearing. >> although the city has made significant strides in their collaborative reform efforts with the community oriented policing services office i have not ruled out the possibility that more may need to be done. i assure you, senators that i'm listening to all voices. >> the justice department is already conducting an independent investigation into the arrest of freddie gray. baltimore has seen a surge in gun violence that began with

the u.s. military is now training syrian rebels for the fight against isis. this program launched wednesday in jordan. the pentagon plans to train more than 5,000 hand picked syrians each year at locations in qatar

and saudi arabia and jordan. >> these are highly vetted individuals. that's an important part of the program. second, the training takes place in a secure location. third, our people participating in the training are very experienced. >> i want to bring in senior correspondent nick paton walsh. nick how are they deciding who to train and arm here? >> reporter: a complex vetting process which is involving psychological testing and background checks. at this stage, it is 90. we are losing power here. you may not be able to hear me. we are talking about 90 in the first wave initially trained of a group that will go on to be 400 strong in terms of the vetted on the list. that is a list of 3,000 who applied to be part of the program.

the 400 u.s. military trainers. the question is does that 3,000 expand to other numbers? there are tens of thousands of rebels of various description that play on the syrian battle field right now. the question is what to do. the u.s. trained troops will be better equipped and have better weaponry. the radios and medical training as well. vehicles. do they though as initially thought, just end up defending their towns from isis or be dragged into other fights that may have more radical ideology than them? the second question the u.s. must be asking is what happens if these rebels come under attack and they spent all this money and time training. do they come to defense with power and artillery? some say it is far too little as far as western intervention. over a four-year long conflict.

a new round of severe weather leaving damage in a big chunk of the u.s. >> we have three tornadoes confirmed in northern texas. warnings and alerts for storms and floods remain in place. hail the size of golf balls near denton texas overnight. a lightning strike apparently setoff a natural gas well explosion. a 4.0 magnitude earthquake. and several tornadoes through oklahoma. one woman died after her storm shelter flooded. oklahoma's governor declared a state of emergency. rain is expected in colorado over the next few days. no damage reported with the storm which brought heavy rain. colorado springs pelted with up to -- it looks like snow drifts.

we have breaking news for you just in to cnn. at least six people are dead in pakistan. a military helicopter carrying foreign diplomats crashed. cnn has learned among the dead are two ambassadors and wives of two others.

the nationalities of the victims have not yet been confirmed. there are conflicting claims on the cause of this crash. the taliban claims it shot this helicopter down. the pakistani military says it was a technical problem. i want to get more information on this because at least two ambassadors were killed in the crash. you are looking at crashes of pictures. cnn's michelle stockman joins us right now. michelle. >> reporter: john, let me give you a bit of background. the military confirmed to cnn a party of foreign diplomats on a helicopter that has crashed. there have been fatalities among that party of foreign diplomats. this was a helicopter in a convoy of four helicopters that were on a goodwill tour within the pakistani valley. it was a four--day tour to promote tourism. they were expected to arrive there today and go to a posh
