>> hello, everyone. i'm kate bolduan, john berman is off. new today, a piece of pizza crust has provided investigators final clue in the hunt for a killer. it all started with a fire, horrible fire in a d.c. mansion. four dead bodies and $40,000 in missing cash. now investigators believe that daron dilan wint is involved in the killing of american businessman, his wife, their 10-year-old son as well as his housekeeper. wint, 34 years old is wanted on first degree murder while armed. this is not the first time, it appears, this man has been in trouble. he's faced multiple charges over the years of theft, assault, even sexual offense. let's bring in senior washington correspondent joe johns with so much more. joe, you're still outside that home. what more are we learning about the hunt for this man now? >> kate, cnn has learned in the

last few minutes or at least confirmed new york city police as well as united states marshall suspect have tracked the suspect, daron wint to the new york city area. we have no more information than that. once again we're told this manhu manhunt, tracked to new york city. they identified after forensics from alcohol, tobacco, firearms found dna on pizza crust. two pizzas delivered to the house from a nearby domino's pizza. the pizza was delivered at a time when they think the family was bound inside with duct tape. the suspect identified as 34-year-old daron dylon wint of maryland. he does have a long arrest record and has served time for

assault. last known address in atlanta where a search was conducted last night. so far no sign. an employee of the family delivered $34,000 in cash on the day of the fire. when authorities got here, that $40,000 was gone. >> we have that income tax up there of daron wint. when folks see this person, they can call authorities. big important news coming out. this is not just a story around washington, d.c. area. they are expanding their search for the suspect all the way to new york city. so now it's a multi-state effort in trying to track this man down. we have one person, obviously, they have identified as a speck, joe. real quick, have they given you a number, learned a number about how many more people could have been involved? >> we're really not certain. we tried to confirm that. authorities i've talked to have told me that they did believe at least two individuals were

involved. however, we'll probably get a more authoritative read on that sometime around noon eastern time. we are expecting police to give a news conference giving us the very latest. >> joe, thanks so much for that. joe johns outside the home in washington, d.c. thanks. let's bring in former fbi profiler as well as former fbi special agent. mary, you unfortunately have more experience with this type of stuff than anyone would really want to. but when you hear some of the scary details that are coming out and what this family went to, they are held, bound, even tortured and then killed and the house lit up on fire as the suspects -- as the killers escape. what kind of criminal profile, in your mind, is this building? >> those behaviors tell me at least the leader, if there's more than one, so you have a leader, that the leader is very cold, very arrogant, has a very

low threshold for anxiety. in other words, you're in somebody's home in a very nice, expensive area where people come and go all the time and he's in there for hours and he orders pizza. he has three adults and a child. 99.9% of criminals would be out of that house in a heartbeat, so quick it would make your head spin. when you see offenders that can hang out for hours, their anxiety level is very low. a fourth aspect of the crime, there's a lot of thrill on the part of the offender that he's getting out of this case, this crime. it's a very sensational, over the top crime. it didn't have to happen in a sensational way. you can get $40,000, they would have given him $40,000 to go away. then you have a pronounced lack of empathy for these victims and what they were going through. so for me, this really points to a very distinct offender type. i would say this person

manifests traits of psychopathy. >> ordering a pizza, hard to wrap your mind around, committing this crime to find food, wouldn't need to be eating at this time. going to the extent of being so callous of ordering a pizza and having it delivered, hard to reconcile. one, it seems, to the layman at least, somewhat of a professional crime. they went to the extent of erasing security footage. they went all the way there. on the other hand they do something that seems almost reckless, which is order the pizza, which is how they finally -- the dna on it is how they finally id'd a suspect. how do you rec side those two things? >> that happens a lot in a crime scene. have you aspects that seem to be

thought out or aspects that seem stupid or reckless. in a crime that extends over hours, they are letting their guard down. so the ordering of the pizza is very arrogant. it's callous. it's very youthful. it just shows their feelings and attitudes toward what they are doing inside that home are vastly different from how the victims are feeling. that also tells me they are extremely ignorant of forensic science technology. >> there's this huge lingering question, of course, of why someone would have done this and gone to the lengths you mentioned. we know that an employee of the family came and dropped off a package of $40,000. so at that point, if that's all they wanted, you think they could take it and go. does this suggest how this horrific crime then played out, they wanted something more? >> it does. there's never just one motive for a crime.

certainly money seems to be an important motive. in cases like this that i've worked in the fbi's biy, we see such things as the offender needs the thrill and excitement. i will suggest to you and it sounds heartless, the main offender in this crime scene was probably enjoying himself for that period of time. so that's another motivation. it's the thrill and excitement of being in control, of holding these people hostage, seeing the fear in their eyes, hearing their screams. that certainly happened that can be very motivational for an offender that has a sadistic side to him. my sense in this case, you do have someone with psychopathic and sadistic tendencies based on what's reported. >> it is, every additional detail that has comes out. now a multi-state effort to find the suspect.

isis controls more than half of

syrian territory, that comes from a human rights group. i it follows another big win taking ancient city of palmyra, home to some of the most precious antiquities. one resident there saying isis fighters going door to door. it also comes on the heels of another isis victory, the fall of ramadi in iraq. senior international correspondent is in baghdad tracking it all. where to begin? what's happening right now? >> reporter: well, let's start with palmyra and isis itself planning to take full control of the city. also hosting a video to youtube, we can't independently verify it. in this video also seeming to show they had taken over smaller oil installations in the vicinity of palmyra. now, significant on many levels.

first you have humanitarian tool the fighting there has taken on civilian population, and on the syrian regime forces we're hearing reports that upwards of 100 syrian army soldiers were killed in the battle. civilians there spoke to said he refused to leave. he said if i have to die, i'm going to die inside my own home. now, living crammed inside his home with 50 other people who had not left under curfew, he told cnn, when we speak about the historical potential lost, the destruction that palmyra would bring on civilization, if, in fact, isis did decide to destroy as it has other historic sites in iraq, this would be devastating. palmyra is a stunning, spectacular testament to the civilizations of past histories lying along trade right, connected roman empire centuries

ago to persia, india, china. here in iraq you have the battle for ramadi in allan bar province with the iraqi government scrambling troops to various front lines and also forcing the u.s.-led coalition to perhaps reassess strategy in both battle fields. >> the reassessment very much independent way as we speak. arwa damon in baghdad, thank you so much. the u.s. reassessing its strategy. u.s. rushing to deliver 1,000 rockets to the troops to help combat the massive suicide bombings, suicide car bombings isis used to seize ramadi. we're talking bulldozers, humvees, packed with explosives that sent government troops running and devastated the evert to try to stop them from taking the city. let's discuss more on both friends with global affairs

analyst and managing editor bobby ghosh. i want to talk to you first about what's happening in syria. there's kind of a simple question for a lot of folks. why palmyra and why now? >> well, why palmyra, i think because more than anything else, isis thrives on international attention. they have learned recently nothing gets them as much attention as destroying ancient historical artifacts. that seems to get -- most of us have become inured to the human toll in the last few years, they get a spike in interest every time they go after an ancient monument in the last months. that might explain why they are going for palmyra. why now? they haven't had a lot of big success in syria a lot of attention on isis hassen about in iraq. they lost tikrit, they regained ramadi. it's a bit of win some and lose some in iraq. in syria, the attention actually has been focused on other

groups, groups like free syrian army, al nusra. they have been recently making big strides, successes against the regime. isis is in the conversation, if you like, falling behind. this is isis way of reclaiming, if you like. they are saying we're here. we're the big power. we're the big force in syria. it's an important statement. they haven't made a big statement in syria since the failed attempt to take kobani last year. this is a reminder to syrians and the rest of the world, we're in syria, not just iraq. >> it also doesn't hurt palmyra sits among gas fields as well as sits essentially on the doorstep of president bashar al assad. we're hearing that more than 50% of syrian territory is now under isis control. that sounds enormous. that sounds startling. what does that mean? >> well, it does sound like a lot. it does need to be verified if

this is from one particular isis group. they are a credible group. it's hard to do in the circumstances iraq, syria finds itself. there's a lot of syrian territory that is essentially no man's land, that neither the government forces nor isis actually controls. whether you should put that under the government sort of slate or isis slate is a matter of some debate. they certainly control large swaths of the country, they have done for more than three years. and the government more important part is nobody is taking an inch of land back from them. the government forces have been driven slowly away. it's not just they have a lot of territory, they are able to take it and hold it and no one has been able to gain it back. that's an important political statement from a group that calls itself a state. let's remember they call themselves islamic state. state defined by boundaries. every time they increase the

boundary, even theoretical, on the map, a big propaganda victory. >> a question for you about the opposite end of the battlefield in iraq and fall of ramadi. the united states we now know, president's national security team, president meeting with his cabinet later today. the united states is also now rushing to send over 1,000 anti-tank rockets in order to help iraqi military to hold off isis. didn't help clearly, wasn't there in time to hold ramadi. with all of that, does that show, even though the administration has maybe downplayed the significance of the fall of ramadi, does that show that ramadi is really a wakeup call especially taken in conjunction with what's going on with syria? >> absolutely. recent, i mentioned this earlier, fall of tikrit, iraqi forces able to take tikrit back from isis, the narrative was isis was being pushed back. the next assault would be mosul, the big city they control in

iraq. there was some momentum building towards that. this switches momentum back in isis's favor. the fact they have been able to take another big strategic city, less than two hours drive from baghdad. i know ramadi well, spent a lot of time there. it is a big signal from isis of their continuing ability to fight. sending anti-tank weapons, it's an old cliche about the military where you say generalities are always fighting the last battle, the last war, there's a sense of that here. these anti-tank weapons might have been more useful a week ago, 10 days ago, two weeks ago than they are going to be. it's generally a good idea iraqi forces have better and better arms to use against isis but the fact is that when you're dealing with suicide car bombings and tractors and so on, i'm not always sure that the weapons are useful. you don't know a car is a weapon until it's right on you and explodes. it's too late to deploy at that

say they have recovered more than 300 weapons from the scene of the deadly biker shoot-out. earlier they said closer to 1,000. let's be honest, that's a whole lot of weapons that shouldn't have been there. the first of 170 bikers in jail is now out on bail. remember, the bail was set for a million dollars for each of them. family members for some of those jailed bikers say they are not criminals and had nothing to do with the violence that left nine people dead. let's talk more about this with seth sutton, taken for jeff batty, the one biker who is out on bail. mr. sutton, thank you for joining me. >> absolutely, kate, welcome. >> what does your client say about what went down.

>> first of all, it's important to remember what it is, regularly held coc, confederation of clubs. it happens all the time with no violence p it's where groups come together to discuss issues that pertain to motorcyclists as a whole. for instance, any time there's pending motorcycle legislation they will get together and discuss it. this the type of thing that's smofd to happen. >> mr. sut oton, real quick, wh business meeting do you take 300 weapons. >> we've heard reports about weapons. we've not seen any actual reports or evidence or any comments on the exact number of weapons would be conjecture at this point. we've made a request for evidence. >> or any weapons? >> i'm sorry? >> or even a single weapon. police say they have recovered them. you kind of have to believe they have recovered weapons on the scene. let's say five weapons.

that's a whole lot of weapons and a dangerous situation to take to what you're describing as a business meeting. what was this all about? >> certainly. we'll determine more when we find where those weapons were found. were those weapons in a car? were they inside the restaurant? as more information comes out, certainly we'll be able to comment more on the possession of the weapons. >> what was your client's role in all of this? >> well, again, like i said, his role was to come and to meet, to be part of this coc meeting. and when he arrived, obviously he came upon a scene that had erupted. it erupted from a small altercation from what we can tell that quickly escalated, unfortunately, as we all know now, to gunbattle. >> was he part of that altercation? >> again, on the specifics we're still doing our own investigation much like the police. we're trying to find out exactly what happened. >> what does your client say? >> well, like i said, my client

is -- what we've talked about is the purpose of the meeting. in terms of the specifics, it's really too early at this point to get into exactly what happened. we do know this notion that this was some sort of planned war or turf war is absolutely unfounded. and the fact that still 170 people are still being held. again, when those people were being arrested, what's being said is there's probable cause that each and every one of these people committed the offense of capital murder. they were engaging in criminal activity to do so. of course that is definitely a stretch. >> right. but nine people did end up dead in all this and it happened in a very public place. police say it's lucky that innocent bystanders were not involved and that police weren't killed in all of this. how did your client say this

escalated from what you described as a confederation of clubs meeting to a shoot-out? >> sure. certainly. wei we'd all love to know how this escalated. my client doesn't know how it escalated. there are very few people that understand the nature, the beginning of the argument that led to this. >> what does he say about fears now of revenge, retribution and threats against police? >> we have no personal knowledge of any sort of threats against the police or threats against our selves. obviously we're going to remain careful and vigilant to make sure. but he has not received any sort of credible threats or anything like that. >> so real quick, what's next for your client? >> well, next is to have surgery. he was kept in jail with a bullet still lodged in him. unfortunately he's not the only person like that. there are still people in jail right now. one gentleman we know who had a

near santa barbara. of course, this is just before memorial day weekend. let's bring in our correspondent. paul, you were right on the scene yesterday. at that team you thought it was 20,000 gallons spilled. how did they now get to over 100,000 gallons. >> the company that owns the pipeline did a reassessment. they said basically it was 2500 barrels of oil that spilled. now they are in the process of cleaning it up behind me. you can see this is a two-pronged effort on land, work crews with rakes and plastic bags. earlier, just a little while ago. we saw them doing what's called tetering boom to a small ship. they pulled that out to sea. this boom allows them to again go ahead and skim and collect and coral the oil. back to plains all american,

and unprecedented land grab 600 miles from its coast. >> when is the last time you went up. >> reporter: cnn got exclusive access to classified u.s. surveillance flights over the islands. first time journalists have been allowed on an operational mission by the state-of-the-art paa. >> just arrived on site above the flee islands targets of today's mission. it's these three islands that are the focus in south china's building in the south china sea. >> in two years china has expanded the islands by 2,000 acres, the equivalent of 1500 football fields and counting. >> you're a military man. you look at this, is there any doubt that's a future military installation. >> it appears to be a buildup of military infrastructure. >> for china this new territory is nonnegotiable. china's foreign minister calls his country's commitment unshakeable. china defends the new islands

happening now, investigators are looking into the amtrak crash -- who are looking into the amtrak crash, they are now taking a closer look at several key things. one of them is cell phone records of the train's engineer brendon bastion. ntsb said text messages and phone calls were made the day the train derailed, but it's not yet clear, and an important point, not clear whether the train was in motion. investigators are examining why the throttle was pushed forward speeding up the train ahead of the crash. speed is a big focus of this investigation. let's bring in james weir, longtime friend of bostian. great to have you here. last time we spoke, you and everyone was coming to terms with the scope of this tragedy. you've spoken with brandon since he was in the hospital.

you haven't had a chance to speak with him since but you have talked to his parents. how do they say >> they're pretty honest with me. they do realize the severity of the situation and they're heart breaken. so is brandon. they say he is mentally and physically and emotionally drained. it's really very hard for him to even think and process things right now. >> james, did they say his memory is coming back yet? >> didn't mention that to me. i think it is pretty much about the same from my understanding talking to his dad, the doctors have him on a pretty tight, very restrictive visitation. in fact to my knowledge i don't know that anybody can see him

but his parents. i think the whole point of that is to help jog his memory along. but there again i'm guessing at that point. >> are his parents on theimmi-- they optimistic that his memory will return. >> oh, yeah they are very optimistic that his memory will return and they are doing everything they can to help his memory return because they want their son normal too back to his normer self. >> that's one big focus what he knows what happened. and another big focus, they are looking in his cellphone records to see what cellphone calls were made, what text messages were made and when they were made. did you text, did you speak with him on that day before the crash had happened? >> no, not before.

i spoke with him in the er that night, previous time i spoke to him before the crash was on his birthday on the 29th of last month wishing him a happy birthday and trying to plan a baseball game. i would be very surprised if they found anything on his cellphone as far as text messages or anything or foecpho calls while he was driving, he never did that and i know that because i've called him, text him several times and it was hours and hours before he got back to me and he would say he keeps his phone in a bag away from him while he's in the cab of the train. >> that is one big focus of this investigation why this happened and the focus is really on your friend right now and everyone
