is full contact campaigning. they have been going after each other and after the president as well following the president's most pointed remarks yet about the republican field. i'll tell you what they said coming up. good morning. welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. it is tuesday, july 28th. christine romans is off today. developing this morning, the search for two boys from jupiter, florida lost at sea is focusing 60 miles off the coast of jacksonville. the area to the size of indiana. coast guard officials are searching for the two boys for 72 hours now night and day. they are not giving up hope and neither are the boys mothers. they spoke to anderson cooper. >> both boys are comfortable on the water. they are avid fishermen and avid swimmers. they are extremely athletic and

very skilled and knowledgeable about being on the water. which is one of the reasons why this search and rescue has maintained the force it has because there is such strong belief that they will be rescued and found very soon. >> let's get the latest on the search from cnn's martin savidge in florida. >> reporter: good morning, john. the coast guard says there is actually reason to have the hope. they say they are aggressively searching, but two, given the weather conditions out there in the atlantic that they are seeing it is possible that a person in the water could survive for four to five days. this would be day four. one troubling factor is of course their boat was found upside down and they weren't with it. we don't know how it got upside down or when it happened. the authorities say that they sent a rescue swimmer down to

investigate. one of the things he noted of the vessel is the engine cover of the outboard was off. could that indicate they had a mechanical break down? later that afternoon on friday severe storms went by which on land may not seem that bad, but in a small boat on water, that could be very bad. then also the finding of the boat. the coast guard says there is good and bad to that. the bad is the fact you did not find the two young men with it. the good is it gives them a good search area and they can extrapolate by currents and drifts. the bad is it is harder to find a person in the water than a boat. there is still reason to hope. >> martin thank you. happening now, president obama is in the final hours of the trip to africa. a trip focused on the fight of terrorism and fight for human

rights. president obama is under fire for ignoring ethiopian human rights. the president praised the democratically elected government although the elections have concerns over the integrity. cnn's robyn kreil joins us from addis ababa. >> reporter: good morning, john. the president's language has been noted by several well known east african writers. careful with dealing with the prime minister and issues of human rights. he was saying in kenya where he came out swinging against corruption and gay rights and other controversial issues that he was outspoken about, but picking his language carefully of human rights.

it came under criticism for the jailing of journalists and locking up a number of opposition leaders in the past. president obama is due to address the africa union this afternoon. first sitting u.s. president expected to touch on issues such as terrorism, particularly here in east africa. praising the efforts of the countries of kenya and uganda and ethiopia in fighting the a.u. force in fighting the al shabaab. he will of course touch on the issues of south sudan. leaders met with president obama yesterday where he spoke frankly. particularly to countries of uganda and neighboring sudan saying their actions are hindering and not helping the peace process stating the deal needs to be reached between the warring parties by the 17th of

august. it if that doesn't happen strict actions will be taken. >> robyn, thank you. president obama took time in ethiopia to slam two republican whose want his job. donald trump calling him a disaster and mike huckabee accusing him of marching the israelis to the door of the oven. >> the particular comments of mr. huckabee are i think part of just a general pattern we have seen that is -- would be considered ridiculous if it weren't so sad. when you get rhetoric like this maybe it gets attention and maybe this is just an effort to push mr. trump out of the

he's doing because he is just a disaster for our country. >> at 10:00, john kerry and jacob lew and earnest moniz will testify ahead of the foreign affair committee. the house committee on benghazi postponed a hearing. the new documents will be released which are 5,000 pages of e-mails from hillary clinton's staff. the chairman of the benghazi committee warns if the documents are anemic he will schedule a compliance hearing. new developments in the death of sandra bland. the prosecutor announced the investigators will come in to review the case before it goes to a grand jury. the california teenager in

custody today after an 8-year-old girl was found dead. the girl was found in the apartment building's dumbpster in the complex. in medford, massachusetts, a 30-year veteran of the police force, a detective placed on leave for threatening to shoot a motorist in the head. motorist identified as "michael" happened to have his camera on the dashboard when the detective pulled him over sunday night for driving the wrong way through a traffic circle. at first michael tried to back away because the detective was not in uniform. >> i didn't know you were a cop. >> i'll put a hole through your head. pull over. >> okay. >> you're lucky i'm a cop. i would have beaten the [ bleep ] out of you. give me your license. >> i also have a dash camera. >> it was nerve wracking when

someone is like i'll shoot you. digging for his gun. that's a bit extreme. >> medford police chief calls the actions troubling. a woman in west virginia who killed her attacker in self defense may have inadvertently led police to a serial killer. police suspect neil falz a killer in several states. the woman tells police she fought him off. >> when he strangled me he just wouldn't let me get any air. when he laid the gun down to get the rake out of my hands, i shot him. i knew he was there to kill me. i could tell he had already done something because he said he was going to prison for a long time. >> police say evidence found in his car included a so-called kill kit which could link him to a string of murders. it is now official. the boy scouts of america lifted the ban on the gay adult leaders

and employees. it is drawing criticism from the church of latter day saints says it might leave the organization. in a statement, the church says it is troubled by the policy change despite the compromise to allow religious groups to set their own policies. a brutal fall in trading yesterday. the shanghai fell 8.5% yesterday. government regulators tried to shore up the market. let's get the latest on the situation today with andrew stevens in hong kong. >> good morning. john. calmer today. the market was down but down 1.7%. if you look here at the market, you see the dogleg. that is the market continuing to fall. this set alarm bells off. biggest fall in about eight years or so.

the question still bubbling a bit as to why the market fell steeply. chinese regulators coming out today, john saying they are looking at malicious stock trading. pointing the finger at someone trying to deliberately push the market down. they also set up a hotline for anyone to report any suspicious activities. if you look at this it looks more like the fact that if you take from the bottom of the market route a couple weeks ago. that is when the chinese regulators stepped in and put a floor under the fall. the market went up 16% until monday. a lot of people telling me what happened is the regulators stepped back on monday after the big rise over three weeks, they thought maybe the market is stablizing. we don't have to do so many stop measures to keep it up. they took their hands off the wheel, if you like and the

sellers moved back in. there is volatility. the floor hasn't been established. expect more over the weeks to come. >> andrew for us in hong kong. what is the impact on the u.s. market? alison kosik has that. >> it could be a big day on wall street. u.s. stock futures are higher. shaking off the turbulence in china. that wasn't the case yesterday when the dow reacted to china. stocks have dipped for five days in a row. the worst losing streak since january. investors are worried about the health of the global economy and looming interest rate hike. the fed reserve two-day meeting happens today. the rate hike is coming. low rates have been key to the bull markets long run. we will get a closer look at the health of corporate america with

first time turkey is taking the fight. at the top of the agenda the establishment of the so-called safe zone inside syria. cnn's jomana karadsheh monitoring the talks for us. good morning, jomana. >> reporter: good morning, john. we're not really expecting to see any sort of military action or military decisions to come out of nato meeting that was convened under article 4 of the washington treaty of nato. this is called for when a member feels their security is under they or territory is under threat. in this case we would expect turkey to be discussing its recent moves and actions it is taking that we have seen over the past few days and also consulting with other nato members. really here john topping the list would be the discussion of what turkey is calling for for some time. as you mentioned the safe zone.

the safe zone it wants to see established inside northern syria along the turkish border. the 60--mile stretch still controlled by isis that turkey wants to see cleared of isis. they want to create the buffer zone to protect it from isis and from other militant dploupgroups. we know the united states has been discussing this with turkey and also expecting that to come up today in the nato meetings. lots of questions, complexities of how the idea and plan could be implemented and what ground troops would be there to protect this safe zone knowing that we will have coalition aircraft most likely patrolling the skies for the safe zone. how deep into northern syria would go. we heard the turkish prime

going to get worse. let's get to meteorologist ivan cabrera with more. >> the heat continues to build. john we will talk about temperatures in the 90s for an extended period. washington new york boston into the upper 80s to 90. the humidity will make it feel hotter over the next few days. the 90s continue into the weekend. there will be no relief in sight. a big deal. further south and west we have the heat warnings in effect. kansas city and st. louis. the temperatures will feel like 105 to as high as 115 as you factor in the humidity. we will watch that closely. look at dallas. you have been to the 100s. right through the end of the week here, that will be brutal stuff. again, we talk about temperatures that approach the levels with heat warnings in effect. we are tracking storms. damaging wind potential. large hail and isolated tornadoes up to iowa and minneapolis and into portions of

tumbling more this morning. shanghai's index falling 1.7% today. that follows 8.5% plunge yesterday. worst drop since 2007. right now, it looks like other markets are shrugging it off. yesterday, the dow fell 128 points. stocks dipped for five days in a row on concerns of growth and looming interest rate hike. the typical american family is poorer than 20 years ago. median family wealth is a 5% decline since 1989. income stagnated. middle class is struggling with the rising costs. everyone has gotten wealthier, but the diversity of the population is causing the median wealth to fall. a big wealth gap with whites on top. a desperate search picking up steam for two teens off the florida coast.

good morning, everyone. it is tuesday, july 28 6:00 in the east. chris is on assignment john berman joins us. the search continues for two florida teenagers lost at sea. the two 14-year-old missing since friday afternoon when they set out on a routine fishing trip. their vote found capsized with a single life jacket found on board. is u.s. navy and other agencies joining the coast guard. they are searching an area the size of indiana in hopes they find the two young boys alive. we are live in jupiter florida with the latest on the efforts this morning. >> reporter: good morning, michaela. the search for the missing boys is anything but easy. they are vowing to continue to search for them. the families are hopeful and praying for a miracle.
