it's not all rosie, twitter shares tanking before the bell jack dorsey is still the ceo. twitter added just 3 million new users. issued a sluggish outlook going forward. so twitter shares, those are down this morning in pre mark trade. "essenti "early start" starts right now. >> just hours from now, debate in colorado. donald trump and the new gop front runner, according to one poll, ben carson, they will face off. how will this new dynamic affect the race? >> a decision coming today. will the officer caught on camera here, body slamming a student, will he be fired? >> and then world series drama. a four minute blackout, a 14 inning game. a bonkers game one matchup
2:01 am
between the royals and the mets. there is a hint, who came out on top? >> when you woke up? >> the game was still going on, crazy. >> that's a sad schedule. >> good morning, everyone, welcome to "early start." >> it's wednesday, 5:00 a.m. in just hours, republican candidates take the stage for a crucial debate the very first one with ben carson on top in a national pom t. neurosurgeon jumped ahead of donald trump. donald trump in a new poll leads by 4 points. >> that is within the margin of error. that was enough to put donald trump in uncharted territory. campaigning in iowa on the defensive. donald trump on the defensive. cnn's sarah murray was there. she has the latest for us. >> reporter: good morning, donald trump showed up here in sioux city iowa with more bad news, the polls show he is
2:02 am
trailing dr. ben carson 4% nation wide. it comes after a string of polls show trump is behind in iowa. he took the stage here, pressing his supporters to work even harder. he said he is not giving up on victory here. >> from the time aannounced, i have been at the top of the polls, almost at the top. we are doing well. iowa, will you get your numbers up, please? [ cheers ] will you get these numbers up? i promise you, i will do is up a good job. >> reporter: trump also took a couple swipes at carson last night, basicaly saying he couldn't believe this was his competition. all this, of course, is going to come to a head on the debate stage in boulder tonight. this is a debate where trump's campaign feelings like the candidate is in his wheel house. it is focused on economic and policy issues, trump can put a spotlight on his business record, something he believes will shine when he is
2:03 am
head-to-head against ben carson. >> sarah, thanks so much. what does all this moean for th republican race? a big night tonight. cnn politics digital reporter great to see you. way different dynamic tonight ben carson, all of a sudden on top. one poll, one poll, but it's a lot different tan we've seen before in terms of donald trump. how do you think this will change things tonight? >> absolutely. donald trump is one who pegged his entire campaign to the pom numbers, now for the first time using his own measurement he is threatened. he's attacked other candidates without any hesitation before, but now ben carson who is an outsider, who doesn't have the sort of political backgrounds that trump could alack like someone like jeb bush is actually beating him. so it will be a fascinating clash of styles with trump really needing to find a way to go after carson to draw carson
2:04 am
into a debate while carson has shown no willingness whatsoever toen gauge with other candidates to bash another opponent it's just not his style, in debates, he's sort of a subdued presence and so eb will be watching trump versus carson, but the question is whether carson is willing to play along. >> carson uses everyone, too. you got people out here who have very detailed economic plans, this will be the content of this debate will be a lot about money, a lot about taxes. a lot about the economy. is that a weak spot for ben carson who isn't really known for his, you know, big think on the economy and possible economics? >> sure. he struggles at times when he is pressed on policy issues presented with previous statements and asked to explain them, asked to translate some of his particularly religious trump speech type leanings into actual
2:05 am
policies to get past congress. so he will be prepared, but this is a candidate who does struggle to sort of take this great energy from the sun but translate it into one minute, 90 sec bites. so it will be the biggest challenge yet for ben carson to have the kind of spotlight he hasn't had on him before in tonight's debate and you can bet that not just trump but another candidates who realize. right. r50i9. if you add these two together, you are looking at, no matter how they shake out, 50% of the republican electorates, supporting trump or carson, if you are someone like john kasich who has a history of bug chairperson, you have to find a way to chip into those numbers, somehow, whether it's trump or carson or both of them. >> we have john kasich. he was on the stump yesterday. he basically says he's fed up with the proposals tossed
2:06 am
around. basically means trump an ben carson. let's listen for a sec to what john kasich said. >> so i want you to know, i'm fed up. i am sick and tired of listening to have to calm it like it is as long as i'm in this race. >> you just heard john kasich right there. let's talk about some of the other people in the main stream lane like jeb bush. does jeb bush need to get out there tonight and essentially say he's fed up? does he need to make a stand tonight as he's cut back on his staff cutback in the polling? >> yeah, we're talking about, you know, a little more than three months before voters go to the polls in iowa for the caucuses there. so it is getting to a crucial stage in the race. yeah, it's not just john kasich, i mean, lindsey graham yesterday sort of threw his hands up and said he has no idea what's going on him he can't believe that he's behind some of these outsider candidates like trump an carson. but, yeah, if you are jeb bush,
2:07 am
you are sort of past the stage now where you can say, okay, we're building for the long term. we're raising money, keeping quiet. jeb bush is facing a threat not yu from trump and carson, but from marco wub rubio, this fellow floridian who is stabing a favorite. someone who perhaps doesn't have the baggage of jeb bush in part because he's only been in national politic fosser a few years, so if you are jeb bush or john kasich or someone like that, you have to find a way to prove that your political experience gives you value to someone like marco rubio doesn't have. >> carley firy no doesn't have to get on the radar, she went after the other woman in the race, bill clinton on the economy. you know, she's got to get back on the radar and try to you know show people she ran a company. >> she can stay there, she can debate. she has to prove she can stick around after the debates, too. >> carley fiorina is a
2:08 am
fascinating test case for how far a great debate performance can carry you, right. she is facing all these challenges, expaining her record as ceo of hewlett packard, it sound like she is sort of getting back to bakes, going after hillary clinton him she sort of has been the republican designated hitter against hillary clinton early on in the race. that's what sort of got her some notoriety on some people's radars in the first place. so that's an avenue she feels comfortable if, but, yeah, she's going to find a way to make this stick, trajz late it into fundraising success, organizational success, and also answer to serve these hewlett packard related challenges that donald trump is happy to macin the context of a debate. >> quickly, hillary clinton, with stephen colbert overnight. you may admit if you were all sleeping or watching payable, she was asked to sort of weigh in on the republican race. let's listen. >> if i say one or the other, it
2:09 am
might influence some people and i don't want to have any influence on it. i want them to go through whatever here process is, because if i am fortunate enough to be the nominee, i want to run hard against whichever republican is up there. >> you can picture either one in the offense, right, either one of those guys? >> well, i can picture them in some office. >> i couped that up poorly, who she would rather face or what she thinks of ben carson and donald trump. that was her answer there. it's kind of interesting to see her with colbert. >> absolutely. so hillary clinton doesn't really want to weigh in on trump versus carson, she loves any time the republican debate is trump versus carson. if you are a democrat, you are probably more concerned with running against someone with more political experience like marco rubio or john kasich, perhaps, or jeb bush, who is obviously a fundraising
2:10 am
behemoth. so trump versus carson, if you are a democrat, you sort of want to see them collect a bunch of you know nasty back and forth and see if they gaffe. see if you can add a bunch of tape to your collection to roll out in a general election. >> and great to have you with us. thank you so much. in many ways, the debate tonight is a pre game t. real excitement will come after anderson cooper 360. we will wrap it up. talk about who did well, who did poorly. what facts were not so factual. a special anderson 366 at 10:00 p.m. on cnn. game one of the world series last night. this was bonkers. the royals, that i outlasted the mets in 14 innings. a lot of tired baseball fans going to work this morning. >> i'll say, andy shoals joins us with more. >> good morning, this was the sec longest world series game ever. took five hours and nine minutes
2:11 am
to complete. this game, it really did have it all, including a power outage that knocked the broad kastz off the air t. bottom of the 4th inning, this game was delayed about six minutes when fox's broadcast truck lost power after conferring the joe torre, they agreed to continue without instant replay. they missed one batter before fox took the international scene. volquez is pitching with a heavy heart. on his way to the ballpark. volquez found out his father passed away. he allowed three runs and six innings to leave and be with his family. alex gordon takes yours familiar deep to tie this game. the 1st run given up all season. we go to extra inning. this is a play that mets fans are still shaking their heads about. a throwing error allows escobar to get on base. three batterss later, he would hit a zachary face fly.

that's your winning run. royals take a wild game one by the final score of 5-4. >> it was a great night. two things you don't want in game one of the world series. one of them is to go 14 innings. the other one is to lose. >> we always feel like we can come back and either make eight game or win the game. so now i think that speaks for team chemistry. we pull together. we are fighting for one. . they get the w. >> game two will be tonight at 8:00 eastern. guys not to be a downer for the mets. 17 of the last 21 winners have gone on to win the world series, including the last five t. met versus to buck that tren if they want to come back. >> stattings can be broken. >> that's what they say. >> sheriff defending his ploy

2:17 am
>>. >> reporter: a very emotional day here in south carolina with people and parents coming to grips with this video. it's shocking in this area. a board meeting was held last night and most of the parents that attended that board meeting didn't express a lot of anger. some did. they were particularly angry about the relationship across the country between police officers and the african-american community. they also talked about the church shooting here in south carolina earlier in the year. >> that is still very fresh in people's minds. they see this video in that context now and it has created a lot of anger and a lot of fear that if the board and the sheriff doesn't deal with this in a direct way, there are going to be consequences. so far, we have seen none of that sort of angry protest in this episode.
2:18 am
the sheriff here has been very quebec to respond, calling for an independent investigation, which the fbi is now going to do. and even say that within 24 hours, he will have a decision on deputy fields' fate. >> this is something that not only people but the world wants to know, what will happen to him? is he going to be able to still be employed here or terminated? i think everybody needs to make a quick decision him i also want to be fair and do a thorough investigation. that's what we've done. >> can you tell us, sheriff, which way you are leaning? >>. really, i don't think that's proper for me to describe, which way i'm leaning at this point. i think the video is very express it and that's probably pretty much speaks for itself. >> now, one other. the sheriff said at the press conference, the sheriff said, look, we've never seen that sort of behavior out of this officer. i've never seen this out of this

2:32 am
swipes at carson last night, basically saying he couldn't believe this was his competition. all this, of course, is going to come to a head on the debate stage in bowler tonight. this is a debate where trump's campaign feels the candidate is in his wheel house. it's focused on economic and policy issues, trump can put a spotlight on his business record, something he believes will shine when he is head-to-head against ben carson. back to you, christine. >> so what does this mean for all the republican presidential candidates in the field. here to break it down for us, digital reporter, let's start with this ben carson on top in this most recent poll. but trump on the defensive. he doesn't like to be sec. he doesn't. so carson on top how much pressure is on him to show his metal on the economy tonight? >> there will be a lot of pressure on ben carson. he has been near the top of the polls for a long time.
2:33 am
this is the first time he has actually been the leader nationally among republicans, so he's going to be hit by a lot of people not just donald trump, although, trump, who has pegged a lot of his campaign, a lot of his sump speech on this idea he's the leader in the polls will be particularly agitated and has shown he is very being to go after ben carson, but other candidates can press as well on contradictory statements on issues leak abortion and this economic policy is not exactly carson's wheelhouse. h will be tested on that. there will be a lot more attention on him in this debate both from the audience, with i is going to be tuning into someone who is the new front runner and other candidatess who now understand, they're going to have to take him dun in order to gain traction. >> you actually think a great deal of focus will come from the moderators, from cnbc running this debate. >> won't they try to steer it back to the economy?
2:34 am
>> donald trump used to be a regular guest on cnbc. carley fiorina worked for them. not so much ben carson. the interesting dynamic, though, eric, even if he doesn't answer the questions the way that some on the stage or the audience might want to hear, you know, ben carson, no matter what he says, it seems to improve his position in the polls. all the supposed controversys he has been in, over the last six weeks, pomsters say it's helped him, not hurt him. >> he comes across as a really gentle sort of genuine figure and so sometimes when he makes these controversial statements, i think the public, especially evangelical voters in states like iowa, where he is doing really well have a tendency to be dismissive of it. to sort of give him some leeway because of his personality, perhaps other candidates might not get. you mention cnbc, whiching will comfortable territory for trump and fiorina, the other two outsider type candidates.
2:35 am
>> right. >> well, carson's never really even appeald to that audience, his appeal has always been through religion. it's been two evangelicals. it's sort of not based on the topics that we will hear a lot about tonight. and so you know, it's possible his audience could watch him sort of pass at opportunities to engage with other candidates and still come out liking. >> here is somebody that knows bugs, somebody that knows how to run a state, who know, he really knows how to talk the talk with and walk the walk on the economy. -se fed up. i want you to listen to something he says. >> so i want you to know, i'm fed up. i am sick and tired of listening to this nonsense and i'm going to have to call it like it is as long as i'm in this race. >> you think you will hear that tone tonight going after the front runners on the economy on bugs and how to run a country? >> i think so.
2:36 am
if you are john kasich, you are someone who chaired the house committee, had a successful run as ohio's governor in the eyes of many republicans and, yet, you can get no traction in this field. with trump, carson, to a lesser extent carley fiorina, the three newcomers dominating with 50% of the overall support. if you are john kasich. you are looking for an opening, throwing your hands up, saying, look, this is ridiculous, trying to find a way to perhaps appeal to establishment types, more moderate republicans, but jeb bush is also going to be looking for that kind of opening, marco rubio has done perhaps the best out of the more experienced politicians lately. he has been willing to take on trump, perhaps he's willing to take on carson, too. lindsay graham, who is not going to be on the main stage made some comments similar to kasichs, sort of throwing his
2:37 am
hands up, saying what's going on here? so, yeah, with the iowa caucuses, a little more than three months out at this point. you will see other candidates who have been slowly building, finally starting to get a bit more compass prated, a bit more willing to sort of go negative. >> quickly on the democratic side of the race, many of you may have been sleeping or watching baseball. she was essentially asked, which candidate she would rather face or which one she could see winning the white house, ben carson or donald trump? this was her answer? >> if i say one or the other, it might influence some people. i don't want to have any influence on it. i want them to go through whatever their process is. if i am fortunate enough to be the nominee, i want to run hard against whichever republican is up there. >> but you can picture either one of them in the office, right? you can picture either one of those guys in the office? >> well, i can picture them in
2:38 am
some office. >> the irony here is hillary clinton would do anything in her power to have donald trump or ben carson be the nominee. >> absolutely. if are you hillary clinton, you want to see as much trump versus carson as you possibly can, you are storing that video in the vault to roll out in a general election, assuming that she makes it there and one of them makes it there. if you are a democrat, are you more afraid of establishment types or more experienced politicians like marco rubio, john kasich, february bush. so these two trump and carson are appealing to a part of the republican electorate that doesn't make up the majority of the electorate. so she is loving this. she is not going to get in the middle of it. she wants to see it go on as long as it can. >> great to have you with us. enjoy the debate tonight. we know you will. >> all right. 38 minutes after the hour. after that debate, a.c. 360
