this is cnn breaking news. >> the breaking news, a deadly terror attack. apparently targeting westerners. a series of explosions that a gun battle rocking gentlemjakar. welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. >> i'm christine romans. it is thursday, january 14th. let's begin with the breaking news. a series of coordinated gun and bomb attacks in the heart of the indonesia capital of jakarta overnight. at least seven people dead. officials say they include five

attackers, one police officer and foreigner. ten others were injured. so far, there has been no claim of responsibility, but suspicion is naturally falling on isis. a terror group that has long sought indonesia for expansion. i want to get to cnn's kathy quintara. >> reporter: we heard less than an hour ago near the site of the explosion, as you said, five suspects were killed in the operation and two civilians killed. he clarified the police reported killed earlier was injured in the attack that was launched by the suspects at a police post at a busy intersection at the heart of the city. across from that is a starbucks cafe and office building.

he said there were five explosions that happened and a gun fight. there was one armed suspect that fled into the building, armed men, heavily armed police forces went into the building after that. we were told that all five suspects were killed and bodies brought to a police hospital. they did say there is a manhunt still going on. christine. >> a manhunt is still going on. this was multiple locations and this appeared to be coordinated, is that right, kathy? >> it was coordinated. it is one area. it is a very busy intersection and essential to jakarta. you have office buildings and commercial establishments. you have a mcdonald's and starbucks open there. it is busy anytime of the day. perhaps a very good target if they wanted to shock the city which is a target of attacks

before. the jw marriott was attacked twice a few years back. so was the embassy here in jakarta. no one expected another attack would happen now. the threat of the terror attack was deemed low after the network linked to al qaeda was weakened here. very capable counterterrorism efforts here. of course, there was a concern like the east indonesia that has pledged pledged allegiance to isis. thank you, kathy. >> and a clear view of the attacks is a man named christian. christian, describe what you saw? >> this morning, around 11:00, we heard a loud bang outside of

the building. we thought it was under construction next to our building. we realized there is 500 meters away from our building that shoot smoke. we said there must be something wrong. there were five or six other other explosions and gunshots. we really realized there was something serious going on. as we have been on the 20th level, we have a good view in central jakarta. we saw the streets closed down and our office building closed down. nobody can leave or enter the building. we had to stay inside, of course, that's what we saw. a few hours later, a lot of police cars on the street. a lot of military over there. nobody really knows what's going on here. >> how long did the shooting itself in the explosions go on

for? >> we thought everything was in 30 minutes, but the whole scene was really empty for at least two hours. even the police do no got to the crime scenes. there must be something going on. it looks like there may be one person with a gun or something like that. nobody was really close to the scene, but two hours later, only an hour and everybody was there. the police and rescue cars and things like that. the whole explosion was 30 minutes. >> describe to me this square. we know we just saw the picture of the explosion happening not far from the starbucks and there is a burger king nearby and police stand there. what goes on in this square? is this an area where if you wanted to target westerners would you go? >> reporter: this is one of the main roads in jakarta.

one of the central lines which goes from the north to the south. it is like in the middle of jakarta. we are at the most central point here. a lot of starbucks and mcdonald's, but also other restaurants and office buildings. it is not clearly only foreigners were there. a crowded place with a lot of cars and office people are walking by. it is like a mixed area. very crowded because jakarta has a lot of traffic every day. it is pretty crowded every day. this is one of the main roads. although, at that time, the cars and traffic. >> tell us a bit, christian, about the level of security in general in jakarta. we just heard from our reporter there kathy quinano there. how concerned with ex-patriates?

how concerned are you over dangerous situations? >> reporter: there was an issue a few years back, but in the office buildings, and entrance, there is security. they check luggage and cars driving on the main area. and also when you walk here on the street, it feels like okay. i'm not worried when i walk home for example. of course, there was something happening a few years back. the last few weeks and months, it feels okay here. >> and now going forward, just i don't know if you are still in the office building. the last time you looked. what is the scene at the site of the attacks? >> i'm still in the office and still can look at it.

there are a lot of police cars now and military still. it seems like some cars are passing by. and i don't know when i can leave the building. it gets normal, i think. of course, it's like massive police cars and military police everywhere. >> all right. christian hubel, we are glad you are safe. thank you for your insights describing the scene in central jakarta. you can see the explosion there. seven people killed in the explosion and gunfire that ensued afterwards. we are getting more details here every minute. >> we will continue to follow the terror attack in jakarta all morning long. first, republicans get ready to take the debate stage and we are getting sharp words. and splitting a record $1.6

breaking news. officials in jakarta, indonesia, say seven people are dead in a series of gun and bomb attacks. among the targets, a police station and shopping mall and starbucks. the united nations official found himself in the middle of the action.

jeremy douglas spoke to cnn by phone a short time ago. >> i was in the car when it first happened. we were actually luckily pulling in the back of the building. we pulled up and got out of the car. there was chaos because people weren't sure what was going on. a bomb went off when we got out of the car. we rushed into the building. a third bomb went off. we went up to our office and on lockdown in the office building. a fourth and fifth and sixth bomb went off. you could not get much more central in jakarta if you tried. right in the middle of the central business area. you have major international hotel chains and u.n., japanese embassy down the street. so, there's a big diplomatic

community and business community here. if you wanted to make an impact for what you are doing, this is the place. >> experts say this has some of the hallmarks of an isis attack. breaking overnight. the suspense is over. three winning powerball sold. one in tennessee, one in florida and one at a 7-eleven in the suburbs of los angeles. matched all five numbers plus the powerball. good for a piece, though, the record shattering $1.6 billion jackpot. cnn's sara sidner got the exciting call in the middle of the night. go to the 7-eleven in chino hills, california. exciting, sara. >> reporter: it was. that just changed.

updating the breaking news this morning. seven people are dead. one a foreigner in a series of terror attacks in the heart of the capital of jakarta, indonesia. authorities say five attackers were killed. the attacks targeted a police station and shopping center and high-rise with a starbucks at street level. as of now, no claims of responsibility, but authorities are looking into whether or not this has an isis connection. and to politicians. republican candidates are preparing for the debate in

north charleston, south carolina. donald trump in the center plank flanked by ted cruz and ben carson and marco rubio and chris christ christie. rand paul qualified for the undercard, but declined to participate. donald trump in florida hinted his sharp words over the citizenship may spill over into the debate. cnn's jeff zeleny was there. >> reporter: donald trump is headed to another republican debate. that was on his mind in florida. he packed thousands of thousands of people in the pensacola center. officials said up to 12,000 people. trump gave a typical speech to the crowds.

he picked his favorite target, ted cruz. still raising questions about his canadian citizenship although cruz says he is a natural born citizen because his mother was a citizen. >> you can't be born in canada. you can't be a canadian citizen. every time i have a meeting with the press, the first question they are asking me is this. you have to be able to run. i'm not going to get into it. i'm sure they will get into it tomorrow night. you have to be like some of the greatest lawyers from harvard, a very good lawyer, right? it's not a settled matter. supposing he runs and everybody's banking on him and then the courts rule he can't run? that's not so good. what do you do? concede the election to hillary clinton or crazy bernie? >> reporter: of course, donald trump is saying if republicans don't do something to stop ted cruz, hillary clinton or bernie sanders could be elected. we will see how much that comes

up at the debate. we have seen time and time again, donald trump has raised something in rallies in days leading up to it and when it comes debate time, he leaves the glov gloves on. voting is getting closer. thursday night in south carolina could be the most important republican debate yet. john and christine. >> every new one is the most important. hillary clinton on the other side is stepping up attacks on bernie sanders this morning as he edges closer in national polls. one iowa poll has him in front. the criticism of the health care and gun proposals may be doing more harm than good. the sanders campaign is seeing huge surging in donations. four times the pace than last year. they claim they can tell it is a direct result of the attention he is getting from clinton. a spokesperson puts it this way. thanks, team clinton.

overnight. we are told that seven people are dead and officials say at least five of those killed including attackers. one foreigner also of unidentified nationality. officials say ten other people were injured. so far, there has been no claim of responsibility, but as you can imagine, people are asking questions about whether isis is involved. cnn's kathy quinano is in jakarta with the latest. >> reporter: john, we are getting conflicting numbers from the explosions and the gunfire injuries and deaths. we heard a while ago that five suspects that with killed and two civilians who died from the explosions. one was believed to be a dutch

national. he confirmed five explosions that happened in the starbucks cafe which is in the office building at the central part of jakarta in the central business district. one at the police outpost which was attacked by at least two people. this happened quickly. the explosions and gunfire heard. people panicked. there was a lockdown and buildings around it. it's very busy in the area. a lot of commercial establishments and one in the office building and u.n. offices headquartered there. we see now that this road leading to the building is still closed off to traffic and security is still heavy there. the security minister telling us there is still a manhunt going on. he did not give details about who they are or where they may be. john. >> kathy, tell me about the area

that was hit. is it clear yet if there was a specific target? >> reporter: well, they did -- the police did say, police outpost was clearly attacked. the grenades were launched by the attackers. this outpost is on an island in the middle of the main thoroughfare that separates two huge lanes. people don't normally walk past that outpost, but eyewitnesss tell us at least two people approached us and explosions happened. before that, there was an explosion in the nearby starbucks cafe across that outpost. so, you know, this is -- if they wanted to instill terror and fear in the people in indonesia and jakarta specifically, this is a good target.

>> in a level of coordination, are officials saying that may lead them to thinking it is an international terror group? any isis ties at this point? >> reporter: police are not saying that for sure. they certainly are looking at that angle. the president himself ordered security officials and military to go after the perpetrators. the people who may be behind the attack. even the networks associated to groups who have a motive for doing this attack. of course, the prime suspect here, is a group, the east indonesian group based in western indonesia. the leader is the indonesian most wanted terrorist and pledged allegiance to isis. >> kathy quiano, thank you so

much. >> let's bring in christian hubel who works in a skyscraper. he has a clear view of the site of the attackers. he joins us via skype. christian, nice to see you. so glad you are safe. tell us what did you see. >> our office is based at the plaza indonesia. from here, we have straight view because we are on level 20. we have a good view on the scene which is 500 meters away. we heard a big noise. sounded like an explosion. we first thought it was from the construction site next to our building. then we realized huge smoke on the street 500 meters away. and the second and third and up to five or six explosions we heard in a few minutes. then we realized something was going on. it must be really serious.

>> how long did this go on? was this a period of minutes or half an hour? how quickly were authorities on the scene? >> the explosions were within 30 minutes. but the whole scene looked like it was going on for two hours because when the police arrived and a lot of people were standing around suddenly everybody was running away. it looks like there was still one terrorist or something like that. and it took two hours until the police now is cleaning up the whole scene and really all the rest of the cars and military police there now. it was really shot down for two hours. it looks like there is still something going on. >> christian, tell us about this area. you work right there. you are on the 20th floor. you can see a starbucks there. a shopping center. u.n. offices not far away.

obviously there are business offices, international business office. explain to us about what this area is like. >> we are here in a central area. a lot of skyscrapers and business offices and a lot of shopping malls as you said. this happened on one of the main roads in jakarta. basically, a huge traffic as every day in jakarta. traffic is huge. this is one of the most main roads. so it is really like a lot of people. not foreigners only, but locals and office people and everybody passing this location every day. it's pretty normal for a business district here because it has a starbucks and mcdonald's. a lot of food and shopping malls. it's one of the main central areas here in jakarta. it is almost one of the most

important areas here in the whole city. and so a lot of business people. a lot of people passing this location. it is not only foreigner. locals going by. >> indonesian officials telling us at least five attackers are dead. obviously many people involved in this. from your vantage point, could you see a number of attackers? did it appear like a coordinated assault to you? >> we did not really see that close. we definitely saw people which are walking on the street and obviously they had a gun in their arms. we just saw a lot of smoke and explosions. people running away. but we did not see where exactly how many it was or what exactly happened there. we just heard explosions and

gunfire. suddenly a lot of military police arrived and shutting down the area. >> christian hubel in jakarta this morning. thank you for bringing that eyewitness testimony. >> obviously people in fear there on the streets trying to get to safety. when you see an attack like this and if there were five or more people involved, this must have been a terrifying scene. guns strewn about the streets there. we saw video of the explosions. >> christian hubel, thank you. >> we will follow the terror attacks all morning long. back in the united states. the race for president. republicans getting ready to take the debate stage tonight. plus, breaking overnight. there are at least three big powerball winners. we'll take you live to where one of those lucky tickets was sold next.

dollars of bank loans. a campaign spokesperson acknowledged the mistake after "the new york times" reported on it. he has stated he will revise any of the documents. this may pose a problem for the campai campaign. he spoke to cnn's dana bash. >> how do you explain to your supporters that you got a very large loan from your wife's wall street bank to fund your upstart senate campaign? >> the premise of your question is not right. >> you didn't get a loan? >> the premise of your question is not right. we made the decision to put our liquid net worth in the campaign. we did so with a combination of savings, combination of selling assets and brokerage account. we borrowed against the stocks and assets we had under ordinary terms. so, those loans had been

disclosed over and over again on multiple filings. if it was the case it was not disclosed properly we will amend. that's the end of that. >> they will make sure it is filed properly. good news for the cruz campaign. a win in the duck dynasty primary. he won the endorsement of star phil robertson. he shows that in a video that shows cruz is godly and able to do the job of president. hillary clinton stepping up attacks on bernie sanders as he edges closer to her in national polls. leads in iowa. the criticism of the health care and gun control proposals could do more harm than good. the sanders campaign claims to be seeing a huge surge in donation. four times the pace at the end of last year. they say they can tell it is a

thank you for that. let's get an early start on your money. looking like a rebound for stocks this morning. futures are higher. look at europe. most of europe, asia lower right now. that really terrible day yesterday in the market spread around the world. the problem is china. oil prices have investors worried about the global economy. yesterday, i'll tell you, plummeting oil prices is wreaking havoc on the stock markets. housing markets and television network. north dakota posted 387% increase in foreclosures last year. oklahoma, 36% jump. texas rose 15%. those three states remain unscathed from the 2008 housing bust. that means the activity is not due to the backlog, but the oil market. >> 380% in north dakota.

goes to show how much that economy is tied to the oil sector. a lot of lives well beyond oil. of course, oil driving the market fluctuations around the world.
