the outsiders they've scored stunning runaway victories in the new hampshire primary. donald trump and bernie sanders staking up the parties. sanders trounsing hillary clinton by more than 20 points, both democrats say their fight will go national rightnow. just a few months ago trump captaured the gop after fatalering in iowa. just barely, ohio governor john kasich came in second place separating himself from the pack of republicans desperate for tickets, but can he go the distance. jeb bush, ted cruz, marco rubio

still in a battle for third place and sixth place governor chris christie says he's headeding back to new jersey to take a deep breath, meantime the rest of the field will be pounding the trail in south carolina just hours from now. let's go to cnn political. i'm going to mark first. he's joining us from manchester right now. he's getting new information on marco rubio. >> we learned in the last 30 minutes he has sent out a fundraising e-mail that he's acknowledging that he dropped the ball during that debate on saturday night, that devastating debate where chris christie took him to the mat. now marco rubio trying to raise money, but telling his supporters that he will never let that happen again. marco rubio in the past has made some pretty big mistakes. the whole water incident had

10:04 pm
45%. there's a tie going on within the republican party with no clear directive here. obviously trump comes out of new hampshire with a big victory, but this whole establishment lane is still so crowded and everyone taking a slice of the vote that it seems to me there's no clarity here. this is going to continue for quite some time. >> mark preson i want to go back to you. everybody is dpegt ready for south carolina and nevada and some of the candidates are looking beyond to super tuesday and all those other contests. this is going to go on for quite a while. >> it is. south carolina a a very interesting state. it's going to be like a replay of iowa. ted cruz's folks are saying he's going to play it hard to the evangelical vote. that tends to be in the upstate. he's going to talk about his second amendment support for gun rights how he's going to talk about gay marriage and family values.
10:05 pm
at the same time as david said you're going to see jeb bush and john kasich battling it out in some ways with marco rubio for that more republican type that we see in south carolina. of course, the big question is donald trump who has come out of here with an unbelievable victory here in new hampshire. he's won by so much, but is that enthusiasm here in new hampshire going to carry over into south carolina and right now we don't know the answer to that. >> it's interesting as we're watching all of this for so many of the republicans the night seems to have breathed some new life into their campaigns. >> we are going to make america great again. >> hillary you just needed this much and head to south carolina because it ain't working here. >> the real winner is the conservative grass roots. >> i did not do well on saturday night so listen to that, that will never happen again. >> there's so much going to happen if you don't have a seat

10:07 pm
kasijohn kasich is looking ahead thinking he's going to plant a flag in places like michigan, iowa, illinois. the problem is there's a lot of time between now and march 8th. if he's able to raise the money tonight if he's able to show that he still has life in south carolina perhaps he can build something, but to go from here and think you're going to automatically be in a position to post good showings in march 8th and 15th states you have to be able to keep some life in you. >> there's no doubt he's going to get some big money as a result of a second place finish in new hampshire. a lot of those establishment republicans they've always liked john kasich. no republican has ever been elected president of the united states without carrying ohio. >> certainly and we'll see how much money couples out of ohio. in many ways a wealthy state. john kasich has ties to wall street so it will be interesting if he'll start to see that
10:08 pm
business money come his way. now john kasich up here really put in hard work to win new hampshire. the question is does he have that same type of infrastructure built down in south carolina and onward. john kasich his type of politics played well up here in new hampshire. last night i was talking to one of the first voters in the nation who said that he had met john kasich about eight months ago and his advice to john kasich was go directly at hillary, you need to go negative and kasich said that's not my type of politics. about seven months he saw kasich again. kasich went up to this part of new hampshire, held a town meeting with 60 people. they came together and he talk to him again and he said you were right, you were right to do this and he ended up voting for him. i think that's what you saw across the state here in new hampshire. is that going to reflect in south carolina? we don't know but i think all this talk over the past week
10:09 pm
from all of us that this would turn into a three person race has turned into a five person race. >> there's a presidential debate coming up saturday night as well. anderson lots to assess right now. >> i want to talk to our panel of analysts. we keep talking about who is in the establishment lane. do lanes exist? >> i think the lanes will have to start to meld at a certain point and if you look at the numbers david was talking about at a certain point the establishment is going to figure out what it wants to do and it may have to adopt donald trump because he's got 35% of the vote here. he looks like a winner in many places in the south. and if you can't beat him, you're going do have to adopt him. >> there's a lot of establishment republicans who don't believe donald trump is enough of a republican. >> right, but they believe he's more malleable than ted cruz. >> they can't stand ted cruz.
10:10 pm
the fact is that they may have to make a choice. >> none of the other so called establishment candidates are willing to drop out. >> i think donald trump had a good night and we ought to give it to him, but he got a third of the republican vote tonight. he's polling about a third of the vote everywhere. it's not clear to me where his ceiling is and he may hit a ceiling at some point and as the field narrows that could be problematic. the question is whether it's ted cruz who takes advantage of that or someone else. >> they could limp along like this. >> one final point i want to make, this discussion about john kasich. he just spent eight months working new hampshire. now these things come in rapid fire succession. they're basically major media events and so he can't do what he did in new hampshire and i think that's going to be a big problem for him. >> just in terms it's a lot different. >> yes, i think it becomes very expensive as kevin mentioned
10:11 pm
earlier, but you don't have time to touch people like you did in new hampshire. that kind of campaigning works in iowa, works in new hampshire, doesn't work going forward. >> one of this term establishment lanes misses is there's a divide between kasich and rubio. they have responded differently to donald trump. rubio essentially has mimicked donald trump. he talks about barack obama wants to destroy america. it's interesting in the exit polling is that kasich ends up winning people who support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants or tying with trump. he wins people who oppose the ban on muslims coming to the united states. kasich was able to create his own lane, not just an establishment lane, but a good moderate lane. he may not win in a primary because new hampshire is unusual. he has to rely on states like massachusetts which will be voting on march 1th, but there's

trump on with an air war versus just having the media fight that you've seen. that's one of the things that's happened in new hampshire was that not many -- all these other campaigns, whether it was jeb bush or marco rubio or whoever he they didn't take on donald trump in a very broad and sustained way. someone is going to have to do that now. the person best do that is ted cruz. >> when they did take on it was normally not in a position of strength. >> it was a reflectionive tactive on their part. >> there has to be -- i think cruz is trying do this with this ad to define donald trump for who he is. other people have tried to take him on by using the same tactics bush was calling him a looser and whiner. that's not going to work you have to put donald trump in a box that he can't get out of.
10:15 pm
>> here is the advantage that donald trump has. he is much more fully defined in the eyes of many voters and the risk for ted cruz is because he's not as defined new information like that about immigration or the directy tricks against ben carson that puts him in a vulnerable position with voters. >> do you think that ted cruz will be willing to take donald trump on in a debate because he had a chance in the last debate to go at him, he was invited to do it and he pulled up short. >> the timing has to be right. sometimes you don't take the pitch. you have to wait for the timing to be right. you have to wait for that moment. you have to lay the ground work on things like amnesty so the voters are primed for that attack. >> the question was you said that donald trump doesn't have the temperament to have his finger on the button. he said it and then he was asked would you say that to him now and he didn't.
10:16 pm
>> here's where the timing's right -- that's where. >> you think south carolina is going to happen. >> that's where the timing is right. if you don't take donald trump on now with the head of steam he has coming out of new hampshire if he wins south carolina and goes into the march 1 states -- >> i want to say on the two ads, but if you're going it be dity and negative you have to be in thag face. jeb bush had to keep himself alive tonight. he work hard and he managed to do it. he may end up being third and he still has the money and he's going to have his brother in south carolina so i'm just saying he could end up being the alternative to donald trump and cruz. >> how interesting to have his brother now out on the campaign trail when early on in the campaign he sort of didn't know what to say about his brother.
10:17 pm
>> jeb bush is still alive. >> he had his mother. jeb bush spent $36 million to come in third place, fourth place and i'm sure he's spending a substantial amount to win in south carolina. i think all of the candidates that i've watched on the republican side jeb bush seemed to be the only one willing to take donald trump on. but here is my pro-donald trump moment, you can't take him on. his voters like him. i don't think -- you go the to let him fail at it. >> hope is not a strategy and one of the ways in that lane to consolidate the voters who believe that donald trump is not only a threat to the party but the country is to confront and him win. you can't run from donald trump. >> the voters are with him. >> it's what ted cruz did in iowa. ted cruz was able in iowa to sew a lot of concern about evangelical voters about the fact that donald trump really isn't one of them. >> we got to take another break.
