latest from mississippi. >> reporter: donald trump was rallying a crowd of thousands in mississippi last night. just hours before voters in this state and three others head to the polls today. trump and his campaign made it clear that mississippi and michigan are their top prizes today. these are both very delegate rich states. as trump was talking to voters in mississippi, he had an eye on florida and taking swipes at marco rubio. >> and we have little marco rubio. when we had chris christie endorse me two weeks ago, when chris was on the stage, chris is the governor of new jersey, but former prosecutor and tough cookie. i thought honestly marco was going to faint. he was choking like a dog. he was pouring down sweat. chris hit him once. he said the obama thing. remember the phrase. he did it again and again and

again. after the fifth time, you see the size of that hand? look at that. i was going to grab him to show him how strong that hand is. he made that sucker up. i was going to say, marco, i won't let you fall. i don't want you to get hurt. >> reporter: as soon as we get past the states here, the trump campaign will be focused on florida. they want to knock marco rubio out of the race. they went on air with a new attack ad against him. this all trying to secure senator rubio's victory in his home state. >> sara, thank you. voter goes to the polls in two states today. michigan and mississippi. big implications for both states in the race. the clinton campaign hoping for a show of strength in the deep south and in the industrial north. polls show her leading in michigan right now. cnn's jeff zeleny with more from clinton's final rally before the voting.

>> reporter: the michigan primary is now upon us. what a frantic final day of campaigning. talk of the auto bailout and trade and talk about guns. hillary clinton is increasingly trying to impress upon democrats that the time is now to start thinking long term. thinking to the fall. at the closing rally in detroit, listen to what she said. >> everything i just said, the republicans disagree with. so we have our work cut out for us. that's why it's so important for all of you to turn out as many voters as you can tomorrow. because the sooner i could become your nominee, the more i could begin to turn our attention to the republicans. >> reporter: now that is the farthest she has gone to saying it is time to wrap this up. she is not calling for bernie sanders to drop out. anything like that would certainly back fire. if she has a strong night tonight in michigan, if she wins

delegates here and in mississippi, they will continue to make their case they believe it is mathematically impossible for them to overtake her. bernie sanders campaign says there are still votes left in california and new jersey and new york. if he does not win in michigan, it will make the campaign harder. he is ending his night in florida tonight. that state among others votes next tuesday. thanks, jeff. let's talk more about the super-er tuesday. joining us now is white house correspondent colleen mccain nelson. thank you for being with us. let's start on the republican side. donald trump, all of a sudden, with a lot at stake today. >> that's right. he didn't have a good weekend. he notched a few losses. ted cruz came out of the past weekend with the momentum after winning a few states.

it certainly seems donald trump did not come out of the last debate with momentum. this is an important test for donald trump as to whether he's reached his ceiling or whether this was just a blip this past weekend and these are good states for ted cruz and donald trump will return to winning. for donald trump, the states tonight look good for him. polls show him winning in the larger states. he could come out of tonight with momentum. it is an interesting test for him. >> michigan is the state he is leading. mississippi, in theory, like alabama and louisiana, a bit which he won fairly handily. louisiana, less so. in michigan, it is interesting, though. if you go by the latest monmouth university poll. john kasich has been surging as of late. marco rubio, to an extent, in michigan, cratering. >> it is fascinating. for so long, everyone said that

marco rubio is the establishment candidate and that's the lane he could occupy if the race would clear out for him. all of a sudden, you see john kasich moving up in michigan. you see marco rubio falling precipitously. kasich has a good opportunity to surprise some folks in michigan. come in perhaps second. come out of michigan with momentum and head to ohio where he has a shot at winning. if he comes in second in michigan and rubio is a fourth and kasich is able to win ohio, he has an argument to make that in fact if perhaps he is the establishment candidate that the party should be coalescing around. >> florida is where there is a lot going on. millions of dollars in advertising going after donald trump. anti-trump ads from outside

groups. donald trump is putting up an anti-marco rubio ad in this state. we have this latest poll right now from monmouth suggesting the race is closer. donald trump still ahead. a lot at stake in florida. 99 delegates. winner take all. voting one week from today. >> florida is the showdown. not only has marco rubio staked his campaign on this saying i will win florida and basically suggesting that if he doesn't win florida, perhaps his campaign won't continue. beyond that, i mean, everyone else in the race is trying to knock out marco rubio in florida. donald trump is focusing his attention on marco rubio there and you see ted cruz who really doesn't have a chance of winning florida opening offices there and deploying staff. expressly for the purpose of trying to hurt marco rubio's chances in florida. this is where the battle will be

fought. >> marco rubio supporters are outraged that ted cruz would beat him. something very upsetting to marco rubio supporters. let's talk about the democratic %-p here on cnn. a lot of people were talking about the fact that sanders seem to interrupt hillary clinton or he was upset when hillary clinton interrupted him. people did make note of it on twitter. bernie sanders was explaining it last night. >> given the fact during the debate, she ended up going on many occasions spoke a lot longer than the time allotment allowed. when i was speaking, she interrupted me. i did not interrupt her. despite the fact she talked longer than the red lights. i think in the middle of the debate and somebody trying to make a point and somebody interrupting you, that's rude. >> i'm not sure interrupt-gate

will amount to much. what may amount to something today is the battle for michigan. >> this is the state they have both targeted. it is worth noting that bernie sanders has not competed. he had ceded the south to hillary clinton. after losing to south carolina, he backed off a lot of the southern states. michigan is a state he has pinpointed and saying he could win michigan. his advisers have long told us this is a state where they expect to have in their words a showdown. they have said they should be able to win here. they should be able to be competitive here. if hillary clinton is able to notch a win here, particularly a double digit win, it undercuts sanders' argument he should continue to fight in the campaign. it raises questions where he can win if he will not win the southern states. if he is not winning in the

industrial north, where will he win? his math problem gets tougher. >> it is interesting. jeff zeleny's piece and they played sound of hillary clinton. talking about the fact the sooner i can look up the nominati nomination, the sooner i can take on the republicans. you get the sense she wants to be careful not to alienate bernie sanders supporters. >> that is right. that was new language from her. earlier in the day, she took a question from someone and was talking about just how she would try to unite the party if she emerges as the nominee. what she would do to bring sanders supporters in the fold. she reflected back on 2008 when she was defeated by barack obama and talked about what she did to try to be a gracious loser and encourage her supporters to back barack obama. she talked about introducing him at convention and eventually

agreeing to not only support him, but work for his administration. it seems she was laying out a road map for maybe how bernie sanders could help her if she emerges as nominee. >> on the republican side, it is not just mississippi and michigan, but idaho and hawaii. none of us know anything about idaho. the first time they had a primary there. it is usually a caucus. there are caucuses in hawaii. that doesn't close until 1:00 a.m. eastern. we don't have a sense of what will happen. i guess marco rubio and ted cruz campaigned in idaho. it is not like anyone campaigned in hawaii. >> that is curious. everyone should want to campaign in hawaii. marco rubio was the only candidate who went to puerto rico. he netted a win there. perhaps showing up in idaho will give cruz or rubio a win

new details emerging this morning about the u.s. strike in somalia. the fighters were standing at attention possibly taking part in a graduation ceremony on the verge of setting up a fight in africa. jim sciutto has the latest. >> reporter: john, the largest strike against terrorists ever. the pentagon says some 150 fighters from the group al shabaab killed in the strike. the target was an al shabaab training camp. the timing was key. u.s. intelligence indicated these fights were about to carry out an attack on african union forces and u.s. forces in somalia. commanders acting in self defense. manned and unmanned aircraft

carrying out the strike. you have al shabaab claiming responsibility for another attempted bombing of a passenger jet. that bomb hidden in a laptop. you may remember a couple of weeks ago when a laptop bomb exploded on a jet in the air punching a hole in the fuselage and carrying that bomber and sucking that bomber out of the hole. two attempted attacks on passenger jets claimed by al shabaab as well. the ambitions of the group greatly concerning to the u.s. counter terrorism officials. attacking western targets inside the country, somalia, but the concern they would do the same outside the country as well. a growing concern here that they are sharing technology with al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. it is the group which is hiding explosives in laptops before, but now al shabaab has the same

we have white house journalist colleen mccain nelson. donald trump has a lot at stake today. >> that's right. after this past weekend, ted cruz was able to blunt donald trump's momentum and establish himself as the leading alternative to trump. this is the chance for trump to reassert himself and show this past weekend was a blip and in fact he is still the prohibitive frontrunner. polls show him doing well in michigan. he's very strong in the south. mississippi could be a big state for him. he has a chance to reassert himself and get his footing back. if ted cruz can pick off a state or two tonight, that could continue to undercut trump and really raise questions about whether donald trump has reached his ceiling and whether voters are starting to sour on donald trump. >> as big as today is, it is a prologue to next week with

winner take all in florida and ohio. there's a blood bath in florida with a lot of anti-trump ads up from independent groups or never trump groups. some loosely affiliated with marco rubio. and the polls right now show an eight-point gap with trump and marco rubio. that is closer than some think. we're getting word today that cnn has confirmed mitt romney has recorded robo calls for the rubio campaign paid for by the rubio campaign. they don't advocate marco rubio, but the robo calls going out today essentially saying don't vote for donald trump. any impact there? >> we saw mitt romney last week with his speech. a lot of people are saying mitt romney is the wrong messenger in the race.

he will not rally voters to the cause and convince people not to vote for donald trump. at this point, marco rubio and his allies are pulling out all the stops. they may as well try anything and everything. florida is his last stand if he can't win his home state. it probably can't hurt to try everything they can think of to undercut donald trump. as you note, rubio is getting a bit closer in the polls. it is probably still very bad news for him he's losing in florida. it is single digits. he is gaining a bit of ground. for marco rubio, it's do or die in florida. >> on the democratic side. two states up for grabs. mississippi, in the deep south, these states have gone strongly for hillary clinton in the primaries to date. michigan is a big test. industrial midwest. also, disaffected workers that should be bernie sanders supporters. 147 delegates up for the state.

both going hard in michigan. >> you know the disaffected workers. this should be bernie sanders turf. this is where his message of a rigged economy should resonate. he has pinpointed michigan as a state he thinks he can be competitive in and even win. if he can't win here, that really undercuts his argument and makes his math problem on delegates tougher. hillary clinton has managed to build a big lead on democrlegat. sanders won in maine, nebraska and kansas. these are all small states. it did not help him in the delegate count. michigan is a big state and prize. bernie sanders needs he this and if he can't get this state, it will be grim. >> in michigan, we look at how

bernie sanders does with african-american voters. that is an area where he can use improvement. >> right. hillary clinton has absolutely trounced bernie sanders when it comes to african-american voters. i was in flint for the cnn debate this weekend. bernie sanders talked about that before the debate. his argument was he is seeing more of a generational divide than racial divide. he said that he thinks he's doing well with younger minority voters and hasn't been able to break through with older minority voters. michigan is an important test for him. he needs to do well with white voters and black voters here. if he can only win white voters in the states, he will not be able to get the democratic nomination. >> colleen mccain nelson, you have a super tuesday part two. thanks for being with us. stay with cnn for the political coverage on earth. we will have results from this super-er tuesday. that's tonight at 7:00 p.m.

carry out an attack on the forces in somalia. the pentagon says the u.s. acted out in self defense. at the same time, you have al shabaab claiming responsibility for another attempted bombing of a passenger jet. that bomb hidden in a laptop. you may remember it was a couple weeks ago that a laptop exploded in the jet in the air punching a hole in the fuselage and sucking that bomber out of the hole in the plane. two suspected attacks on passenger jets claimed by al shabaab. the ambitions of the group concerning to the u.s. counterterrorism officials. attacking western tar gets in the country in somalia, but concern they would do the same outside the country as well. a growing concern. a growing concern they are sharing technology with al qaeda in the arabian peninsula and it

of the $75 million she was seeking. she broke down in tears describing how this affected her and how this video will be online for the rest of her life. here's what she said in a comment after the verdict. she said i would like to thank the nashville court and jury for their service. the support from the people of nashville is overwhelming. i would like to thank my family and friends and legal team. i have been honored by the support from victims around the world. she said their outreach helped her stand up to hold people accountable. >> her testimony made a lot of people pause and think about not just sportscasters, but female celebrities and spotlight they are under and precautions they have to take when they travel. also anyone on social media. the pain. we talk about bullying as kids. what she had to endure after the fact. to hear her comment on that was revealing. >> sometimes i think the internet is self healing.

in fact, in cases like this, the internet is not self healing. a video stays online for every despite attempts to scrape it off the web. to hear her talk about that, the reminder of people googling to see pictures of her are partly responsible for the damage and hurt that it caused her. case. this is about a sex tape from a decade ago that hulk hogan was filmed in. he was with the wife of his best friend. there's a debate about how much he knew about this at the moment. this is a case that he says is about privacy. he says his privacy was violated. he is suing the web site gawker for $100 million. ba gawker says this is a case about the first amendmet. this is fundamentally an issue of press freedom. they were within their rights to broadcast the few seconds on the web site. this is a big case for gawker. they don't have $100 million. they say this is ex-estential. here is what he said yesterday. >> tell me, did you have anything to do with this and he kept saying no, i didn't. i would never do that to you. how dare you. when they confirmed that bubba was on the tape and he turned

the camera off and bubba told heather this is for our retirement, heather, i started shaking. >> so bubba is the best friend of the wife that he was in bed with. this happened many years ago. hulk hogan talked about his sex life in books and on the howard stern show. he has not been a private figure, but it is different when gawker published part of the tape. he says it violated his privacy. >> gawker is streaming this? >> they are streaming it. certainly there have been first amendment fights in the past that have about topics. "hustler" magazine and larry flynt. on topics perhaps more of pure interests. this is a case of privacy clash against how much the press has a right to report on top ics that
