traveled to the heart of marco rubio country. miami. and he pulled out a surprise endorsement. former presidential candidate carly fiorina took the stage and said she is squarely behind ted cruz. watch. >> donald trump and hillary clinton are two sides of the same coin. they are not going to reform the system. they are the system. so when the establishment says ted cruz is too conservative, too much of a fighter, he won't get along, i say, you go, ted. >> so that just happened a few minutes ago. before that, the other big news on the republican side of the race was essentially vulnerable donald trump ending up crushing the crowd in michigan, mississippi and hawaii. ted cruz did pick up a win in idaho and marco rubio this morning is picking up the pieces after a just awful, awful night.

the action is focused on florida and idaho, win or take all states next week. the last poll showed donald trump leading in both of those states. the delegate math right now working in his favor. but ted cruz, who i can approximated up the big endorsement, he's in second place. clearly right now, the chief rival to donald trump with a powerful new endorsement from carly fiorina and it happened just moments ago. let's talk about more with justin phillips, a ted cruz supporter. thank you for coming on. the carly fiorina endorsement, what does it mean? >> it mean as lot. it shows some strength for the cruz campaign, the fact that people are coming into the campaign. former rivals are realizing, okay, we've got a choice, either donald trump or ted cruz. who do we want? a guy who is a consistent conservative and that's ted cruz. we don't want a guy who is part of the problem, a guy who brags about buying politicians. honestly, if you're bragging about buying politicians, you

really need an indictment, not a nomination. >> you're talking about donald trump. ted cruz is obviously running against donald trump but also running against marco rubio. i can't help but notice the site of this endorsement, miami, the home town of marco rubio. what should we make of that? >> well, it's a show of strength in rubio's backyard. and honestly, you know, god bless marco rubio. great guy. but he needs to have a reality check right now. he is not going to be the nominee. he's not going to be the 45th president of the united states. if he means what he says about donald trump, all those things he said about donald trump, if he truly means that, the only way to do that is to bow out of the race and endorse ted cruz. that's what he needs to do. >> ted cruz says the other people in the race -- john kasich and marco rubio -- need to prayerfully reconsider their

run. you're beyond that. are you calling on other leaders in the conservative movement, maybe even other elected officials to call on marco rubio to get out of the race? >> absolutely. i think that's what needs to be done. he needs to step out and consider his future as well because if gets crushed in florida, he doesn't have a political future. there is only one way to stop donald trump. the second choice is ted cruz. not donald trump. so if those people were to leave rubio because he drops out of the race and come over to ted cruz, then it's really a neck-and-neck race and let's talk another thing on numbers. i crunched the numbers this morning of the remaining delegates that are left, donald trump needs to win 54% of those in order to clinch the nomination. ted cruz needs to win 61%. if he gets the rubio support, which is a natural constituency

for him, it suddenly is a real neck-and-neck race and i think senator cruz pulls ahead and wins this. >> justin, you're a key figure in the tea party movement which is all about having your voice be heard, don't tread on us. are you ready to sit here and say right now that if donald trump does end up with the most delegates heading into the convention, maybe not a majority but the most, that he should get the nomination? i mean, do you think that all of this talk in the contested convention goes too far? >> no, i don't think it all goes too far. where it does go too far is if you talk about establishment figures stepping in to take the race away from the two top candidates, such as throwing a mitt romney out there, then, yeah, that goes way too far. that's stealing the election and, you know what, that's suicide for the republican party. if somebody like mitt romney or some other establishment figure comes in and in a contested convention or brokered convention, which ever term you want to use, and they take this away from donald trump or ted cruz, because those are the two

that by the time the convention goes around will have earned the most delegates, at that point it's the suicide of the republican party. i think a lot of cruz supporters will be angry as well and they may well walk away from the gop. >> thank you so much for being with us, judson phillips. a big moment, carly fiorina endorsing ted cruz in miami. that is where we find kate bolduan right now. hey, kate. >> hey there, john. let's continue that discussion exactly, about that carly fiorina endorsement of ted cruz. here we me to discuss is matt lewis, a senior contributor for the daily caller and kayleigh mcenany and ana navarro, a friend of marco rubio as well as endorsed and backed jeb bush when he was running. so, guys, let's discuss. kayleigh, you were sitting right here when ted cruz made the

endorsement and one of the things she said that will be played over and over again is donald trump, hillary clinton are two sides of the same coin. they are the system. >> right. >> and i'll tell you this. i'm sure donald trump still would have enjoyed having her endorsement, right? >> yeah, of course. you want an endorsement by any of your colleagues who stood on the debate stage with you, absolutely. that being said, i found it so interesting that cruz and fiorina are perpetuating this donald trump as an insider. he's never held a position in politics. he's an outsider. so it's rather comical they try to paint him as an insider. i don't think that's going to take them very far. >> ted cruz supporters believe this will have an impact because they think it shows ted cruz is bringing people in to the campaign, getting more people on

board. what do you think? >> i think he's trying to become the nontrump candidates and trying to get everyone to coalesce around him. that's why he does this endorsement in marco rubio's home town right before the florida primary. i think clearly there are two mainstream movement conservatives in this race. marco rubio and ted cruz. and the sense now is that ted cruz is much more likely to be the last man standing against donald trump. i don't think this fiorina endorsement matters. i don't think she brings a lot of voters with her. it's a sign that cruz is gaining momentum and the coalescing can begin among conservatives going reluctantly to cruz. >> maybe a psychological win. at this point, it's a very big victory. >> yep. >> when it comes to this. >> ana navarro joining us. the crowd goes wild. >> this is called miami time.

i'm not going to say cuban time. >> i did say you liked a dramatic entrance and that you did get. >> welcome to my ala mater and to my city. >> i love it so much. >> let's talk about last night. trump -- i'm going to steal a line from my dear friend john berman. vulnerable shnomerable. after every big voting day, can donald trump be stopped? >> yes. look, nothing is set in stone in politics until it's set in stone. so a lot of things can happen between now and election. he does not have a clear path yet. it's time to come to grips and deal with the reality that there is one emerging alternative to donald trump and his name is ted

cruz. there is only one person who has beat donald trump. and it is ted cruz. and i think, you know, he's now won seven states. he's close to him on the delegate and i think what you're seeing, for example, with this carly fiorina endorsement, i agree with matt, it doesn't bring a lot but it does show folks who are anti-trump are beginning to see cruz as that alternative and they are going to put -- >> that coalescing should happen on march 14th. if donald trump is to be stopped from winning the 1,237 delegates that he needs, it happens with rubio winning florida and kasich winning ohio. that's the best scenario whereby ted cruz could actually become and emerge from a brokered or contested convention. because the base -- if there's a sense that donald trump has stolen this from him, the only person you could potentially turn to that might be palatable to the base would be ted cruz. >> and someone who actually won delegates? >> right.

and the thing is, ted cruz was rather unpalatable, to use your word, to many of us until a couple of days ago. >> it's increasingly hard for him. i have a hard time seeing ted cruz win new york and connecticut and a place like florida. it gets harder for him. that being said, he did win maine. he performed well in michigan. he was tied with kasich. that was an impressive win and he's turning to this populist message of, i know those people with the hardworking hands and that does appeal in those states. it gets harder. it's not impossible. >> but the way he wins is from people like me. >> that must have hit hard and he ended up with zero delegates.

that's where the estimate remains right now. he's pulling behind right now in florida in the latest cnn polls and the latest polls. what do you say to your friend marco rubio sf. >> i think he's got to hang on to florida. he's put all of the eggs in the basket and it's not just about saving his candidacy. i think it's about saving his dignity. it's less about reaching the 1237. at this point, the reality is that it's mathematically impossible for marco to reach the delegate needed to be a nominee. >> ana, that's a big statement coming from you. >> i went to law school because i couldn't do math but i know enough math to know he can't reach 1237 but i do think that marco has got to stay in. he owes it to the people of florida and his supporters. he had a lot of organization in this state and he's going to stay in. i have zero doubt. i've known that man for 25 years. this idea that he may not be

coming to you live from the beautiful campus from the university of miami, florida, the faceoff between bernie sanders and hillary clinton. here is now just hours away fresh off a huge night for sanders, his surprising come from behind victory in michigan. the vermont senator narrowly edging out clinton and most of the pundits leading up to it. clinton crushed sanders in mi

mississippi. to talk about the wind at his back and no need help smiling, his campaign manager jeff weaver is here. >> what surprised you about last night? >> i think senator sanders really closed strong in michigan. i think we've seen that in state after state. a lot of our states he's won by double digits. so the more people here and see bernie sanders and his message, talking about rebuilding the middle class, they respond. >> but when you look at the math, it is, yes, a big win and a psychological win is just as important right now. when you look at the map, that's the thing that matters at the end of the day. she's still continuing to increase her lead in terms of delegates. >> right. but you have to look -- we get through march 15th, we have five big steaks coming u-- big state coming up.

from there it gets increasingly and those margins are going to allow him to eat into that delegate lead. she was very strong in the south and first lady of arkansas, a lot of outside of the south, hillary clinton has yet to win convincingly anywhere. >> sanders said last night, he believes the strongest states are yet to come. >> that's right. i think we're going to do well up and down the west coast. i think we're going to win california, oregon, washington, we're going to fight in new york. that's going to be a big showdown state in this. there are six states after march 15th in march arz and the map looks so much better for him. and one bit of a good news, when you look at to the exit polls,

it looks like you had your biggest support from the african-american community in michigan. the exit polls and 65 to 31%. i have heard bernie sanders speak last night. reaching out, trying to reach out in the african-american community but she's still beating him. 65-31. >> that's right. if you look at young african-americans, it was split between snarz sanders and secretary clinton. that's an amazing, amazing amount of progress that he has made in reaching out to the african-american community and also with michigan. the black middle class in michigan was really destroyed by the trade deals that hillary clinton supported in the deindustrialization that followed and they know that bernie sanders was the person who stood with them against these bad trade deals. >> you're a huge fan of polls now. let's talk about the newest polls out from cnn in two key states. here in florida and ohio. clinton in ohio is up 30 points.

clinton in florida is up 20 points. >> she was up 30 points in michigan a week and a half ago. >> do you think the same exact thing will happen? >> i don't know about everywhere but we are going to have wins on march 15th. there's no doubt about it. >> do you believe these polls? >> no. >> you don't believe these polls? what do you think it's going to be? >> i think the race is much closer than that. >> single digits? >> nationally or these states? >> these states. >> it varies from state to state. i can't give away the secrets. >> that's what i'm asking for, obviously. >> even before last night, hillary clinton said on the stump one line that i've been repeating because it was really telling. she said the sooner she becomes the nominee, the sooner they can turn her focus to the republicans. >> we feel the same way. the sooner bernie sanders is the nominee, the sooner he can turn his attention to the republicans. all of the polling shows consistently against all of the top republicans bernie sanders does better against them than hillary clinton does.

that's just the fact in the polling. they are not my polls. so i think democrats have to be really concerned that if you nominate hillary clinton, in a state where she was ahead and lost, when donald trump goes there and talks about her devastatingly bad deal on trade, his observation about what she did in terms of supporting these trade deals in places like ohio and illinois, where the furniture industry all went to china, that's going to be a devastating attack against her, against which she has no defense. you saw the debate the other night. her only defense was to create a dishonest attack which has been widely criticized saying that bernie sanders did not support rescuing the auto industry when in fact he voted to rescue the auto industry. she has no response for why she allowed corporate interests to sell out america and ship our jobs overseas. >> i can expect that very similar message is something that resonates with voters in

all right. the republican race looks so different this morning. donald trump extended his delegate lead. now there's new polling showing him with strong wins at his back heading into florida, ohio, win or take all states next week. 367 delegates at stake total on march 15th. as i just said, the biggy is florida and ohio, win or take all. ted cruz held a rally in miami, the heart of marco rubio country. what did he do? he unveiled a surprising endorsement. carly fiorina fully behind ted cruz. clearly the cruz campaign smells some blood in the water when it comes to marco rubio who had a brutal night. as we sit here right now, i don't think marco rubio won one delegate. joining me to discuss, the editor for "the florida

sun-sentinel" and a ted cruz super pac backer. also with us, susan, former rudy giuliani administration official and senior adviser and spokesperson for the committee to draft speaker ryan as president. if only we had time to talk about that but we don't. rosemary, i want to talk with you, in florida right now, a lot of talk about what marco rubio should or shouldn't do after this really bad night for him. what happens to his career going forward in your state if he doesn't win florida? >> you know, it has all unravelled so quickly. he has bet everything on winning here and yet, as you point out, the latest polls show him down 20 percentage points to trump. you know, we didn't endorse marco rubio in this election and he's our home town senator because we don't think he's qualified. really, his whole career has

been about running for office and when he gets there, he doesn't go to work very much. so what will he do if he doesn't win the election? you know, i think he's just so focused on tuesday and so it's got to be heartbreaking for him because he's just put his whole heart into this thing and people haven't rallied around him as the person who is most qualified for the job. >> susan, last night i said i was going to hold off on speaker ryan but donald trump made a point of saying that he had a phone conversation with house speaker paul ryan after he suggested that things may not go well for ryan. he said it was a good conversation and conciliatory. a lot of people looking at what donald trump did last night and say, here's donald trump trying to seem more mild perhaps, trying to reach out to the republican establishment. is there any possibility to make any inroads for donald trump with people like paul ryan? >> it doesn't look like that is

going to happen. when you look at the national polls, he's losing very badly to a contested convention and now we see ted cruz is actually on the move. he's losing in florida. this endorsement by carly fiorina is really probably one of the most meaningful endorsements that we've seen all cycle going into florida's -- >> why? >> because she adds a different perspective to -- or a different side of ted cruz that i think most people don't -- makes most people uncomfortable. so seeing a woman by his side speaking for him on his behalf really does make a difference and i think people -- and a lot of people liked carly. they liked what she said and couldn't get any team, mostly because she didn't have any money. >> kelly, one of the things that happened that was interesting last night, your guy, ted cruz, he finished second in michigan. >> yes. >> hillary clinton finished

second. >> john kasich badly wanted to finish second in michigan going into ohio. he tried very, very hard. what do you think that does for the ohio race? does that give donald trump a bump? >> it does. to governor kasich's credit, he got re-elected in ohio 16 short months ago. that's the difference between kasich and ohio and rubio in florida. rubio in florida, the tea party insurgent who toppled charlie crist in 2010 is not the rubio in 2016 running as the establishment-backed candidate and not able to get traction in what is clearly in florida and elsewhere an outsider's race. i think that is different. governor kasich seems to have much more of an advantage to win ohio to really compete in ohio in the next six days than senator rubio does in florida. in addition, i'd like to say the carly endorsement is important for another reason and it's that

she will be very -- carly fiorina will be incredibly effective of lumping together hillary clinton and donald trump. it's a very smart strategy and she's probably the best messenger i can think of to do that because donald trump insulted her looks. look at that face. i say, look at that beautiful face when i think of carly, listen to that big brain and voters will. she had an impact on the race that can't be seen in delegates. it's almost an intangible aspect. she'll do that now as the surrogate. >> when you talk about marco rubio not having a path in florida, all three of you were nodding your head in agreement, which is a remarkable thing to sit here six days before the primary and have all of you agree on that. rosemary, let me ask you about another florida figure. former governor jeb bush, a lot of people have been wondering, will he, when he? is he going to endorse marco rubio? if he was, does he have second thoughts based on what happened

yesterday? >>. >> well, to have impact, he needs to do it soon. that he hasn't done it seems to be sending a really strong message. you know, i just wanted to talk about on the ground here in florida, it doesn't feel like cruz is making a lot of ground. this still feels like a trump/rubio race here in florida and you know they are both from florida and there's a certain irony here as well, that this is the first year that florida has a win or take all primary and the reason that we moved the date back is because our legislature thought that jeb bush would be in the lead. so as it was -- cruz would have more opportunity to get more votes and rubio if they hadn't changed the date. but all eyes were on jeb when this thing began and that's why the date is tuesday and now here we are looking for jeb.

all right. what a night in miami. bernie sanders and hillary clinton face off in a debate you can watch right here in cnn. such a different atmosphere following the stunning sanders upset in michigan.

florida votes next tuesday. new cnn polls show that hillary clinton has a big lead in florida. look at that. 61 to 34%. and campaign manager for hillary clinton, let me say right off the bat, bill, this debate tonight, what a different, different scene it's going to be now after what happened in michigan. >> i think you'll have to excuse hillary clinton at the debate tonight and certainly well deserved. i think bernie must feel like mark twain. the reports of my death have been largely exaggerated. all across the networks just a couple of days ago everybody was writing bernie's political obituary. this was a huge win for him last night, came from only 30 points behind. it really shows, i think, that that message of his of jobs and trade and his appeal to the people really feel left behind

by the political and the financial establishment is resonating in these states. hillary clinton won a state that democrats will not win in november and bernie sanders won a state that democrats must win in november and everybody ought to take a very close look at that. >> patty, let's stipulate that hillary clinton actually won more delegates last night and this is a delegate game and we know that's important. at the same time, we also know that she badly wanted to win in michigan and this does change the scenario for her. so what does she need to do on the stage tonight to correct whatever did go wrong in michigan? >> well, look, first of all, i will give it to bernie sanders, he had a fantastic victory in michigan last night, a must-win state for him. but you said that the delegates are important.

they are not just important. it's crucial. i lived through it in '08 with barack obama, against barack obama. he won the sweep of the southern states, like hillary clinton won and is winning now. she still lost and right now hillary is winning by a greater margin than barack obama ever did in 2008 in terms of the delegates. having said all of that, sure, i do think that tonight's debate, she's going to have to not so much go after bernie sanders but really sort of retool her message to focus on the economy. >> right. >> you know, talk to working class voters. that's where she came up short in michigan yesterday and she really needs to sort of pivot to that message hard and strong. >> and you can see it in the exit polls, right? if you ask the voters in michigan about the issue of free trade, how do they feel about free trade, the exit polls and i

think we have that number, are pretty clear that the voters in michigan are not at all happy about the idea of free trade. you can see it right there. they say it takes away u.s. jobs. that's a message that bernie sanders has been very consistent on and that's a message that is somewhat new to hillary clinton. >> it is. and again, hillary has done very well in these primaries. she's got the lead in delegates and she's certainly, i'd say, the front-runner right now. it's a matter of maybe authenticity. this is something that bernie has been saying and preaching for 30 some years and particularly on these trade deals. i mean, most working americans, i believe, feel that nafta really screwed them and cost 5 million jobs or whatever. that was signed by bill clinton and hillary supported it. ttp, bernie supported it from day one. every single labor union, private and public, opposed ttp.

we are here live in miami, florida, at the university of miami. some breaking news out of washington. that very much affects the state of things in florida. republican national convention suing the state department for e-mails, communications from hillary clinton's days there and beyond. the rnc says the information has direct bearing on her qualifications to be president

and voters need to know about it before the election. good thing that we have the rnc's chief strategist and communications director here with us now to discuss it. thank you for coming in. in this lawsuit, it says that this information is manifestly relevant to whether she, hillary clinton is fit to lead this country. what are you trying to do here? >> two lawsuits actually. one deals with communication between hillary clinton and her top aides, cheryl mills, patrick kennedy, during her tenure as secretary of state. the other has to do with her time after she left the state department and with her aides that still were at the state department and her campaign and outside entities whether there was coordination or collusion to cover it up. what we know now is with each passing e-mail dhaump comes out we find more classified information, more things she said never existed. so we filed a lawsuit, a request with the state department last

year. we have heard nothing. they have stalled. we are taking it to federal court. with each passing day, we find out more and more information about hillary clinton and in doing so it has a relevance on her ability to be commander in chief. >> the fbi is investigating everything surrounding her e-mails. what do you think you will uncover that the fbi is not? >> we don't know. at the end of the day it is public information and legally allowed to be seen by the public. if the fbi is investigating it may take months and years. we're at a critical point not just for republicans but for democrats and they need know what is in the e-mail, any cover-up, what information was in there. these are topics and information the public needs to know. >> i can hear what hillary clinton is saying right now, the timing and topic and messenger points to this is political. >> she said that about everything. we have had judges, inspector generals appointed by democrats,

president obama. >> why now? >> we didn't. we tried to get this information a year ago. they stalled on it. at some point we realized their goal is to kick the can down the road so they can be elected before it happens. we need to let the american people what occurred during her tenure of secretary of state, if anything nefarious went on, which whether there was a cover up. these things are relevant to her fitness to be the president of the united states. >> republicans had a big night last night. after the wins by donald trump, ted cruz a big win. we talk about it every time you come on, more or less likely that you are looking at a contested convention after the results last night. >> i'd like to start with the big night. congratulations to bernie sanders. he did phenomenal in michigan and shows the depth he has and i think you will see that race until june. with respect to our race we have four phenomenal candidates up there. the intensity continues on our

side. the level record turnout on our side speaks to the enthusiasm th that's on the republican side versus the democrat side. with each passing day it is more lakely this will go on longer than it has in the past. remember, we have a big day on march 15th. we start the winner take all phase, particularly in florida and ohio where those two have is a lot of delegates at stake. >> stand by. i think i'm hearing ted cruz is holding an impromptu press conference. let's listen in. >> between donald trump and i. we are the only two that have any path to getting to 1237 delegates. head to head with donald trump we win. the polling yesterday showed we beat donald head to head by 13 points. so if you don't believe donald trump is the best nominee for republicans, if you recognize 65, 75% of republicans do, that

donald loses to hillary in the general i would encourage republicans, even if you are supporting another candidate to come and join carly and the millions of conservatives coming together and unifying behind our campaign. >> they are at a rally saying don't vote for cruz because that gives it to trump. how do you answer that? >> a i said, candidate can only have a path forward if the math allows you to get to 1237 votes. you are running out of elections and delegates. at thint this point i have 361. donald has 100 more and nobody else is close in the delegate country. if you want to stop donald trump the answer is in the same as the eight other states where we beat donald trump which is to you know fie behind our campaign. i will say to all of the folks who are supporting other people, maybe you were supporting jeb bush or chris christie, maybe you were supporting rand paul or

here divides the anti-trump vote. why is giving trump a victory here of 99 delegates good for you or the republican party in general. >> let's be clear. our object is not to give trump a victory anywhere. we are competing nationally in all 50 states. we have an incredible grassroots team on the ground in all 50 states. media was quick to write us off in virtually every state in which we won a victory. the media ya said there was no chance to win in maine, no conservative could do well in new england. we won resounding victory in new england. in kansas the media said trump had a dominant lead and was unbeatable. we beat him 2-1 in the state of kansas. we have won victories from coast to coast, literally from maine to alaska, both of which we have won and from texas up to iowa. we are seeing a national victory. so we are competing hard to win

florida and what's going to happen there and beyond. interestingly enough in a new cnn poll out this morning, trump is leading florida and ohio on tuesday. one question in there i want to ask you about. voters were asked, if the candidate in the state doesn't win, should they get out? 71% said if kasich doesn't win ohio he should get out. 66% said if rubio doesn't win florida he should get out. what do you think republicans are saying here? >> look, we're at a phase where each of the candidates has to assess their viability, their resources and support. as they go in to these key phases that's important to determine whether or not or whether they can continue. far be it from me or anyone in washington to tell them what they need to do. it will be up to them to determine if they have a level of support that allows them to continue. if they want to stay in the race and have support they should do it. if they want to suspend their
