and corrupt. more words from donald trump and these are directed at his own party and its nominating process. the republican frontrunner heads to upstate new york blasts the delegate system in cleveland. that is something we heard from him at the huge rally in albany. he expects hillary clinton to be the nominee despite being in his words, guilty as hell, of mishandling her classified e-mails. let's bring in cnn's sara murray to shed some light on all this. >> reporter: good morning, john and michelle. donald trump is not backing down on his criticism of the republican nominating process. he stumbled in the delegate wrangling in colorado and louisiana. speaking here in albany, new york, to a crowd of thousands, he suggested to them the system is rigged. >> so we have a rigged system. so in colorado, they were going

president the country ever saw, you know why? i'm not a vice president. i'm a president. >> you don't want to be second fiddle? >> it is not that. i'm running for the top job. if i don't get the top job, i'm still governor of ohio. >> that's what everyone says early on in the process if they would be vice president. the reason people are asking this question, why is john kasich still in it? is he angling to be a vp pick for ted cruz or donald trump? >> originally when he started this thing, kasich started this back in july. almost a year ago now. that was the question. the vp was the big one. there are so many candidates in there. jeb bush, scott walker up at the top of the field. maybe this is the guy who carries ohio and changes the map

a bit. now it's interesting. he could get the nomination. it is still a tough road for him. it is not easy. if trump can't clear that 1,237 or make it close enough to where the party officials feel and leaders feel they need to basically keep it from a contested convention, if kasich can get to a contested convention in cleveland, he has a really good shot at starting to maybe getting the nomination. it is a possibility. >> tom, what do you think donald trump is looking for in the vp pick? he put the names out there. is he trying to pull diversity? you think about kasich with trump. that seems almost too strange a mix. that match could not be made in heaven. what do you think he is going for here? this is something people are starting to talk about. >> sure. you know, you could argue some

partisan diversity there. you have trump and you have three establishment picks. walker, rubio and kasich he's floating. it's clear they don't really want any part of it. you can see where he needs some of that. he really needs to bring some of these folks back into the fold. he needs to assuage concerns. you have seen him doing this behind-the-scenes. he had the meeting with the republican party right before north dakota. and you know, you can see that they want to keep everyone in line. you can do that. you can do that. that's outreach. that is good partisan outreach. >> trump said he wants an insider for vp. you don't hear that often. >> withhat about sarah palin?

you are talking ideologically. you hear kasich talk about the religious freedom laws coming out. >> i read about this thing they did in mississippi where apparently you can deny somebody service because you're gay? what the hell are we doing in this country? >> he is talking a little more liberal there on the social side. right after he made that strong statement, he kept saying over and over again that well, you might disagree with a lifestyle. you might not feel that it's right. it really seems like he was starkly playing it both ways. did you notice that, tom? >> you know, it's classic split the party. this is sort of everything's pushed to the right, if you will, this cycle. you can't lose. he's in a weird spot. the establishment, you could argue will support him. a lot of the old establishment and moderate republicans will support him.

that's not enough to get him over the top. so you know it sounds like at the beginning of that answer is really his inclination. it seems how he really feels about it. you hear him hedging a bit. this is convention work. you know, it doesn't look like these guys are going to get to 1,237. it is possible trump could do it. if it goes contested, you need to swing blocks of delegates. you need to pull in states. you are fighting a lot of the battles you had in the caucuses and primaries. he needs to pull those folks in. you can't get to 1,237 with moderate. >> big race in new york. hillary clinton and bernie sanders facing off thursday night. we heard from someone we hadn't heard from in a while with the democrats last night. or maybe not depending on which interpretation.

vice president joe biden said something that made people's eyes pop a bit. >> this country's ready for a woman. there's no problem. we will be able to elect a woman in this country. >> when he said that, his aides tried to end the interview thinking joe biden was saying he wants a woman to be president. i wasn't necessarily talking about hillary clinton. he said it. >> why not throw everything out there now? why hold back? don't you think, tom, that seeing kasich out of a debate where he's sometimes lost in the crowd, when you have trump and cruz and all of their back and forth. here he is with his family. don't you think this was a much, much better scene for him? a better way to actually hear his voice on these issues? >> sure. you know, you heard the candidates say that. they love the town halls. they love the format. it presents them in a more human

right now. you got a real big contest coming up in new york. you have some big mid-atlantic contests yet to come. nothing's been decided yet. so anything you can do where it is personalizing and humanizing and adds depth. these are not just one dimensional people here. these are distinguished politicians with long careers. veteran businessmen. having the family on stage really gives a lot of depth. it goes beyond the mud slinging we so often see. it helps bring them out. it helps bring them out and talk more about what they're thinking. what's behind their policies. it's a great format. it eases them up a lot. you get a lot of nice quotes and thoughts. >> the candidates seem to love it. it is a break from the mud slinging. let's get back to the mud

slinging. donald trump complaining about the delegate routes. john kasich says he will use the rules to get to the convention. cruz campaigning in california. this is what he said about donald trump's complaints. >> you may have noticed that when donald loses he gets very unhappy. he yells and screams and stamps his foot. he curses and yells and insults anyone nearby. look, as we know in the state of california wine is something best served with cheese. >> that sounds like berman in the morning. >> you appreciate that ted cruz really does like cheese. i'm not making that up. ted cruz is a cheese lover. for him to bring out cheese is a

big move, tom. >> such knowledge. >> what about donald trump? he is attacking the delegate system. on the other hand, he clearly seems to have a little bit of a new focus. he is all in in new york with a hope that a big win in new york could right the ship a bit in the hunt for 1,237. >> he has to get to 1,237 before the convention. a contested convention does not look good for him. if he can lock that in beforehand, he will be good. he is likely to get the nomination. he needs to get above 50% in new york to make that happen. that's just the key benchmark here. you know it is interesting about cruz is the primary and the convention wranglers, people who have done this before, will tell you that there's the primary after the primary which are the

state conventions. the congressional district conventions where they are selecting the delegates. what is funny, trump doesn't show up for these, but cruz does. cruz did colorado last weekend and north dakota before the. he is doing wyoming this weekend. in person with the republican activists. a lot of these people are pretty dedicated to him. you don't see that as much with the trump and kasich delegates. but more so with cruz folks. that just really reinforces it. if trump cannot clear that 1,237, he is in troubled waters in the national convention. >> it seems the rhetoric is the headline every day. it ratchets up every day. the words get nastier. would you say, tom, this has officially gotten ugly? not just the republicans with the attack, but the democrats. if that is how it is now, what

will it look like in two or three months time? >> these conventions, both conventions will be big battles. very rarely does it get this close to the convention without having a presumptive nominee in place already. going back to trump talking about the walker, kasich, rubio as potential vp picks. you could see him try to go in and if he doesn't have the delegates he needs, trying to get them by picking off kasich or rubio. if he could cut a deal to get that to 1,237 by naming his vp before the convention. these are tactics from lincoln's era. this is stuff they used to be in 1948. the last time you had a really big contested republican convention. the same is true on the democratic side. this thing will be fought all the way to philadelphia. >> tom lobianco.

an important cnn exclusive. two rugged former taliban fighters turned to isis and defected. now speaking only to cnn. they describe the terror group tactics as too brutal to handle and the isis promises to help ordinary afghans empty. i want to bring in nick paton walsh live from kabul. nick, you spoke to the men face-to-face. they have a fascinating story to tell. >> reporter: the men, former taliban fighters, killers themselves. when the taliban group under pressure, people came across the border from pakistan, hard and radical under the isis flag and said join us for face the consequences. they took that choice and soon saw that isis were after their own warped ideology and money and in their eyes, too brutal.

they describe the beheadings and how those who were relatives of fighters who died were not given up to the person's family to look after, but put in an isis camp. that was enough for the men to decide they chosen the wrong side. they defected and now working with the afghan government in the uprising program to get militants together to kick isis out. it is backed up by american fire power. isis are to some degree on the decline in the east of the country from where they were last year. because of drone attacks hitting them again and again. they are still there. they are popping up in your areas. it is staggering to see men like these two we interviewed, former taliban. once attacked by american air power, now hoping american air power will hit their villages because their homes have isis living in them and they want the

yesterday. closing lower. it is back in negative territory for the year. verizon workers planning to strike almost 40,000 employees from massachusetts to virginia. preparing to walk off the job tomorrow morning. they want a new contract to limit outsources and increases pay. verizon says they need more flexibility everybody as the number of people who use landlines decreases. you like getting rewards at starbucks? it will be harder to get the free drink. the coffee store rewards is based on how much a customer spends. instead of earning one star per visit, you get two stars for every $1 you spend. you have to spend $63 or 125 stars to get the free reward. under the old plan, it took 12 stars. this is good for latte drinkers who spend more money.
