2:00 am
it is tuesday, april 26th. nice to see you this morning. it is voting day. ted cruz and john kasich aimed at donald trump may fall apart. in hours, voters head to the polls in the five eastern states in the acela primary. indiana is the next huge battle ground one week from now. cruz is boasting about kasich pulling out of indiana as part of a deal where cruz is supposed to give kasich a clear path in new mexico and oregon. this is to block trump from winning enough delegates to clinch enough votes. kasich will be in indiana for a fund-raiser and meeting with the governor. he is telling people if they want to vote for him, they should. >> i don't see this as any big deal. other than the fact i'm not going to spend resources in indiana. he's not going to spend them in other places.
2:01 am
so what? what's the big deal? i never told them not to vote for me. i'm not over there campaigning and spending resources. we have limited resources. you ought to feel good about it. >> trump is blasting what he calls collusion. jim acosta has more. >> reporter: the alliance with ted cruz and john kasich is not going unnoticed. donald trump opened the flood gates at kasich. hurling insults at the ohio governor. could the deal work? kasich pulling out of indiana could help cruz and hurt the gop frontrunner in the state. trump has been making the case that this proves that cruz and kasich simply are not the best suitors for the gop. here is more. >> kasich is doing worse than many of the people that left months ago. i mean, if you look at marco
2:02 am
rubio, he did better than kasich. to this day, he has more delegates. this is just a guy who is a stubborn guy who eats like a slob and should not have press conferences like he is stuffing things down his throat. i'm not leaving. i'm not leaving. he's 1 for 42. and i would have won the one, but i was given a dirty poll by nbc were they came up with a poll. it's true. >> reporter: now the trump campaign is still confident that the tycoon can reach that magic number of 1,237. a top official within the never trump movement told me don't be so sure. the official said trump needs indiana. he wished cruz and kasich joined forces weeks ago. fund-raiser in indiana today. a- john and christine.
2:03 am
>> thanks, jim. on the democratic side, today could be a chance for hillary clinton to put more distance between herself and bernie sanders. clinton is 250 pledged delegates ahead. late last night, clinton and saints spoke in duelling television town halls. arguing over whose job it is to unite the democratic party if clinton wins the nomination. >> it is incumbent upon secretary clinton to reach out to my supporters, but all of the american people with the agenda that they believe will represent the interests of lower income fames and middle class and working families and those concerned about the environment and not just big money interests. >> i did not put down conditions. i did not say if senator obama does x, y, z, i will support him. at that time, 40% of my supporters said they would not

support him. i spent an enormous amount of time convincing my supporters to support him. and i'm happy to say the vast majority did. that is what i think one does. >> brianna keilar is with the clinton campaign in pennsylvania with the latest. >> reporter: john and christine, the clinton campaign feeling pretty good about the primary day. they feel good about pennsylvania. they think they have maryland all but locked up. and because of that, secretary clinton is channelling some of the confidence into focus on the general election. unveiling a new attack line on donald trump in wilmington, delaware. >> trump says wages are too high in america. he doesn't support raising the minimum wage. i say come out of the towers named for yourself and listen to people. don't just fly that big jet in and land it and go make a big speech and insult everybody you can think of. then go back and get back on the

jet and go back to your country clubhouse in florida or your penthouse in new york. >> reporter: looking at the math, you see how it is difficult for sanders. coming out of his loss last week in new york. to deny hillary clinton, he would have to win six of ten. you factor in super delegates and he would have to win three of four. he has a number of states that are racially diverse. john and christine. >> thanks for that. joining to us break down the acela primary, we have tom lobianco live in the washington bureau. good morning, early bird. i want to listen to what sanders said about the whole stop trump strategy or collusion. listen. >> you know, i don't tell voters
2:06 am
what to do. it's up to them. you always husband your resources in your campaign. they want to husband their resources in certain places. we want to husband ours. >> is this strategy working or are they back pedaling? >> i guess we will find out in a few weeks whether it is actually worked. some of the critique of this is they came too late. voters are starting to pay attention. especially in indiana. some question of what would happen with the kasich voters whether they would stick with him. a lot of moderate to centrist republicans more business type republicans. they're not necessarily going to go with cruz. they could easily go with trump. that could inflate his margin there. you know, there's no clear

victory there. you know, trump calls this an act of desperation. unclear that's actually what this is. they got to do something. >> the issue is how they talk about it. when marco rubio tried to forge his alliance with john kasich still in the race, marco rubio's staff says if you are a rubio supporter, vote for john kasich in ohio. these guys can't make themselves do that in this alliance. kasich says if you want to vote for me, vote for me. it doesn't appear to be the way cruz and his supporters are viewing this deal. listen to what ted cruz had to say about the maybe alliance. >> the fact that john kasich has pulled out of indiana gives us a straight forward head-to-head contest between me and donald trump. >> that is cruz talking to our sunlen serfaty. why is kasich going to indiana
2:08 am
to fund raise and meet with the republican governor? why won't he say vote for ted cruz in indiana? >> you want to talk about a tenuous alliance? this is the type of thing where if it is successful, it breaks down in july. right at the convention. this thing has a time stamp on it from the start. you know, if they are successful at this, think are baey are bac fighting each other. they need to deny trump the 1,237 delegates and from there, they are right back at each other's throats. >> let's talk about carly fiorina, on the short list for the ted cruz candidacy. how serious is the vice president candidates on a ticket that doesn't exist yet? is this trying to look like
2:09 am
maybe he's in the big leagues? is it positioning? >> you have to do something. look at fiorina. she's been one of the strongest surroga surrogates. she is out working the conventions and helping his team sweep the delegates battles. incredibly effective. it's a different dynamic. in the previous cycles, what we see is we have a presumptive nominee at this point. the trump people want to present him as that way. there is no clear presumptive nominee yet. you have to look back to 1976. previous contests. bringing somebody on to the ticket heading into a convention before then gives a little oomph or boost. it rounds them out. >> okay. tom lobianco for us in washington. five states up for grabs. for the democrats, a chance for
