battleground polls show the race too close to call with just one weekend left in this race. good morning. welcome to "early start." i'm christine romans. >> i'm john berman. it is friday, november 4th. 4:00 a.m. in the east. no more fridays after this one in the campaign. let's give you the headlines. developments overnight in the race. donald trump as you heard took a swipe at hillary clinton asking a number of veterans and military leaders if they can imagine hillary clinton being this be boss. can you imagine her being their boss. hillary clinton went after donald trump accusing him of dog whistle politics. blaming him for support in which he has denounced. this as both candidates are in pennsylvania and ohio today. this morning, counting to 270 is hard because it is a big number and you don't have enough fingers and adding up the states to get to 270 is getting

complicated. for you unfamiliar with ways of our republic, you need 270 votes to win the election. hillary clinton wants new hampshire. now polls find it tied there. and a new poll from nbc news has donald trump ahead by one point. he has no chance without georgia. joining us this morning is cnn political reporter eugene scott. start with new hampshire. four votes that are so important. you can count those on your fingers. >> we said in the past whoever is grabbing the headlines, there is negative news about them. the last time new hampshire poll was taken, donald trump was getting criticism for alleged sexual misconduct with women. we saw a lot of those in new hampshire backing away from donald trump. we saw that with voters as well. as you said before, new hampshire could swing any way on any given day.

>> why is new hampshire so subjectable to news? >> i don't know the why, but people say new hampshire tracks more closely with the nation and tracks more closely with the news than any other state. it is the most responsive. part of it is a very informed electorate. it is largely an educated electorate. a lot of suburban boston is what new hampshire is. people paying attention. hillary clinton, by the way, new hampshire is part of almost all her maps to 270 unless she wins nevada. let's talk about trump's path to 270. it includes georgia. georgia is a red state. there is a new wall street journal poll which has him up by one point. >> and there is an issue of urban versus rural. there are people voting for donald trump. atlanta has black voters, brown voters, women voters and millennial voters.

they are concerned about the issues that hillary clinton is speaking about. they are getting on board with her. >> i don't see georgia on the candidates schedules. >> no less issue for tal kopan whom we will talk about in the next hour. there are people out there and tal suggested the clinton campaign is so big, you don't see everything they're doing. the top line surrogates. >> so many top line surrogates. hillary clinton has three stops in less than eight hours today. pittsburgh, detroit and cleveland. cleveland with jay-z. they are trying to get out the early vote in ohio. they are handing out tickets in a place where you can early vote for that event. the creative ways the campaigns are trying to rack up votes. this is a day after hillary

clinton was alongside bernie sanders targeting donald trump and courting african-american voters. we have cnn's brianna keilar in raleigh. >> reporter: donald trump's deputy campaign manager says this path to victory goes through here and north carolina and iowa and ohio. that is why the clinton campaign wants to cut him off in the tar heel state. the key to victory is the african-american vote. hillary clinton is out performing donald trump by a wide margin. she is not doing as well as president obama in 2012 and 2008. that's why he has been here making a pitch for her and why hillary clinton made this pitch to north carolinians today. >> he has spent the campaign offering a dog whistle to the most hateful supporters. he retweets white supremacists and spreads racially tinged conspiracy theory.

of their 10 year old son barron. and the economic news is due at 8:30 a.m. today. the jobs report expected to show 177,000 net new jobs. better than september. the jobless rate ticked down to 4.9%. it was 5% in september. half the rate at the height of the recession. wages expected to hold steady. up 2.6% over the past year. you like to see stronger wage growth. it has been slowly improving. democrats want a strong number feeling it will help hillary clinton's closing arguments on the economy. she tied herself to the president obama legacy. in his terms, the economy added 11 million new jobs. hiring is positive for 72 months in a row. but donald trump has blasted every jobs report since he started running. he called september anemic. he called the numbers phony.

he said the unemployment rate is higher than the government is reporting. various times in the campaigns, he said unemployment rate is 10% to 20%. this just in. the election is soon. it is tuesday. for complete coverage of that day -- basically we're on nonstop now until the thing is over. tuesday is the big day. on 24 staraight hours. >> the end is in sight for the candidates. hillary clinton and donald trump targeting key battleground states. what can we expect in the next four days? he intentionally leaves a lot open to interpretation. you could absolutely interpret this to be an attack about benghazi or e-mails or other attacks, he left it open to be interpreted as the first female commander in chief. that is why it is the eye of the beholder statement. >> since we're on the subject of political roarsch tests, melania trump. is it political malpractice having a trump raise the issue of being too mean on social media or an act of pure genius that we just don't understand. tal. >> those are my only two options? you know, it doesn't make a lot of sense in terms of an optics perspective. brian has made the point that she could be speaking to an audience that is not the beltway or reporters and that is true. at the same time, at this point

in the race where people are getting their news and local and national media, there is no way any report about this will not include probably high up in the story in the first few paragraphs the irony of the fact her husband is known for attacking people on social media. while the point she is making is valid and bullying on social media is a problem especially directed at young people. she is calling attention of a flaw of her husband. that is questionable move. >> i think it is a subtle jab or message to her husband. i don't know about you. this is the way my wife tells me to shape up. >> she gives national speeches? >> local speeches. there is something to be said for the better half in a marriage. suggesting to the husband how to adapt and change his ways. by the way, trump has not been tweeting insults and on the

listen to this. >> the most frustrating thing is some of his support is coming from working folks. people say well, you know he will be our voice. are you serious? you don't see him hanging out with working people. unless they're cleaning his room. or mowing the fairways on his golf club. >> this time, tal, it's personal. >> absolutely personal. keep in mind, it is personal on a few levels. for a lot of this election the obama legacy so to speak is on the line. think about his signature achievement. obamacare. it is talked about arguably more than any other policy other than immigration and it bears his name in the lingo. he feels like his policies are on the line. it is clear from the way he speaks he feels his legacy beyond policy is on the line. you know, he was the first african-american president.

he was the barrier breaker in that regard. so much rhetoric on race and how minorities feel. he made a clear pitch to minorities on the trail. if you want to vote for me, you want to vote for hillary. he has made this personal. he is embracing that and running full steam ahead. >> i say donald trump made it personal when he questioned where he was born for months and years. even the very origin of the president. >> when we hear about we need to remember birtherism. he talked about the fate of the republic rests in the hands. >> the world. >> what's incredible is he is challenging the voters saying don't let me down. that's the subtext of the speeches now. >> where do we go from here, brian? i think the clinton team will end up on monday night in

philadelphia. they've got every minute matters. every appearance matters. every rally matters. the polls are tightening. >> the candidates are mostly on the east coast. new hampshire, north carolina, florida, pennsylvania. >> trump's going all the way to reno. he knows that is part of his key map. i have been pressing the clinton team on this. why are they still working so hard for ohio? i understand that it's a state that barack obama won twice and it is fairly close. it is not essential to their map. they are putting resources in it tonight especially with the rally with jay-z. >> it is interesting. the clinton campaign has been struggling for a few weeks in how to deploy resources because it has so much. it has had very successful fund raising and high profile surrogates. it has a lot of places to play on the map. we think politics is about prose

and poetry. it is not. hillary clinton has a lot more opportunities to take this thing. she could write off ohio. she may play to force donald trump to spend resources there. polls have shown it within the margin of error. it is not completely gone. she has been in arizona. another state where she trailed. they may be forcing donald trump's hand. it is hard to make the calculations. you want to go as many places as you can. you also want to be strategic. it must be a tough challenge for the clinton campaign when they have the opportunity to be in a lot of places to really pick and choose. >> the tighter the race, the worst the day after. if clinton is the prevailing candidate and wins on tuesday night, but by a few electoral votes. that will make a difference in what donald trump says and the reaction to the election. the difference between 272 and 320.

that makes a big difference. i wonder if the calculus is picking the toss-up states and attempt to turn them blue to run up the score at end of the day. >> they are just trying to win. >> just settling on winning. donald trump finishing the campaign in new hampshire. going back to new hampshire on monday night. both pennsylvania and new hampshire have in common is there is no real early voting. you go to those states late because it is late. those are the states you campaign in, tal. >> absolutely. it is pointed out to me that hillary clinton is strategic about timing visits to states when the states are actually going to be voting. you want momentum through the finish line. when i said politics is math. the area that hillary clinton has been able to put a lot more resources into for many months now is a turn-out operation. donald trump has almost been

relying on the republican party for his turn-out operation. you better believe when she is going to the states, it is not about flying in and doing a speech and flying out. there are extensive operations here to get the voters that actually need to vote to the polls. it is an incredible ground game that is playing out on both sides throughout the country. >> they are bombarded with television ads. if you live in pennsylvania or ohio, sorry. we learned this week, brian, the clinton team is spending money in reliably blue states. they want to shut out donald trump in the states he thinks he would have to win. >> partly because they have the money. i was amused to get text messages from the campaign asking for a few dollars. i suppose they can spend it on tv ads. think about monday night. the philadelphia rally and closing argument by hillary clinton. it was the site of obama's speeches. pennsylvania is crucial in the
