"early start" continues right now. >> he retweets white supremacists and spreads racially tinged conspiracy theory. >> and these great medal of honor recipients behind me. to think of her being their boss? >> her being their boss. what did you hear when donald trump said that. a lot of questions this morning and quite a discussion. all of this as two new

battleground polls show the race too close to call with just one weekend left in this race. good morning. welcome to "early start." i'm christine romans. >> i'm john berman. it is friday, november 4th. 4:00 a.m. in the east. no more fridays after this one in the campaign. let's give you the headlines. developments overnight in the race. donald trump as you heard took a swipe at hillary clinton asking a number of veterans and military leaders if they can imagine hillary clinton being this be boss. can you imagine her being their boss. hillary clinton went after donald trump accusing him of dog whistle politics. blaming him for support in which he has denounced. this as both candidates are in pennsylvania and ohio today. this morning, counting to 270 is hard because it is a big number and you don't have enough fingers and adding up the states to get to 270 is getting
1:03 am
complicated. for you unfamiliar with ways of our republic, you need 270 votes to win the election. hillary clinton wants new hampshire. now polls find it tied there. and a new poll from nbc news has donald trump ahead by one point. he has no chance without georgia. joining us this morning is cnn political reporter eugene scott. start with new hampshire. four votes that are so important. you can count those on your fingers. >> we said in the past whoever is grabbing the headlines, there is negative news about them. the last time new hampshire poll was taken, donald trump was getting criticism for alleged sexual misconduct with women. we saw a lot of those in new hampshire backing away from donald trump. we saw that with voters as well. as you said before, new hampshire could swing any way on any given day.
1:04 am
>> why is new hampshire so subjectable to news? >> i don't know the why, but people say new hampshire tracks more closely with the nation and tracks more closely with the news than any other state. it is the most responsive. part of it is a very informed electorate. it is largely an educated electorate. a lot of suburban boston is what new hampshire is. people paying attention. hillary clinton, by the way, new hampshire is part of almost all her maps to 270 unless she wins nevada. let's talk about trump's path to 270. it includes georgia. georgia is a red state. there is a new wall street journal poll which has him up by one point. >> and there is an issue of urban versus rural. there are people voting for donald trump. atlanta has black voters, brown voters, women voters and millennial voters.
1:05 am
they are concerned about the issues that hillary clinton is speaking about. they are getting on board with her. >> i don't see georgia on the candidates schedules. >> no less issue for tal kopan whom we will talk about in the next hour. there are people out there and tal suggested the clinton campaign is so big, you don't see everything they're doing. the top line surrogates. >> so many top line surrogates. hillary clinton has three stops in less than eight hours today. pittsburgh, detroit and cleveland. cleveland with jay-z. they are trying to get out the early vote in ohio. they are handing out tickets in a place where you can early vote for that event. the creative ways the campaigns are trying to rack up votes. this is a day after hillary

clinton was alongside bernie sanders targeting donald trump and courting african-american voters. we have cnn's brianna keilar in raleigh. >> reporter: donald trump's deputy campaign manager says this path to victory goes through here and north carolina and iowa and ohio. that is why the clinton campaign wants to cut him off in the tar heel state. the key to victory is the african-american vote. hillary clinton is out performing donald trump by a wide margin. she is not doing as well as president obama in 2012 and 2008. that's why he has been here making a pitch for her and why hillary clinton made this pitch to north carolinians today. >> he has spent the campaign offering a dog whistle to the most hateful supporters. he retweets white supremacists and spreads racially tinged conspiracy theory.
1:07 am
you better believe he is being heard cloudily and clearly. >> reporter: it is a mad dash for hillary clinton. she will be in pennsylvania, michigan and ohio today. ohio with star power from jay-z and focus for her in philadelphia over the weekend. she will be in philadelphia with katy perry on saturday and then with her husband and chelsea and president obama and first lady michelle obama in philadelphia on monday. the night before election day. john and christine. >> thanks, brianna. donald trump in new hampshire and ohio and pennsylvania today. in north carolina on thursday, donald trump had an off-script moment that is getting a lot of attention. >> you know when i look at these great admirals and great generals and these great medal of honor recipients behind me, to think of her being their

boss? i don't think so. and you know they're incredible patriots. they would never say a thing, but i know what they're thinking. it's not for them, believe me. >> trump praised the veterans bravery and his own particular courage. let's bring in jim acosta for the latest. >> reporter: john and christine, donald trump continued to try to make a comeback in the last week of the campaign at a rally in north carolina. he once again attacked hillary clinton for the e-mail controversy. he saluted military veterans and talking about his own bravery. here's what he had to say. >> they are so much more brave than me. i would not have done what they have done. i'm brave in other ways. i'm financially brave. big deal. >> reporter: if there is one subject donald trump is hesitant to touch is president obama. after days of attack, trump said the president should be back at the white house doing his job.
1:09 am
a far cry from the personal attacks on the president in the past. >> thank you, jim. in pennsylvania this morning, there is still the whiff of irony wafting through the air after the surprising speech of the campaign, a trump who said we're all too cruel on social media. this is melania's first public speech since cleveland. she said social media is too mean and too filled with insults based on looks and intelligence. dana bash said wait a second. has she ever met donald trump? let's get more from sara murray. >> reporter: good morning, john and christine. melania trump on the campaign trail in philadelphia to deliver a speech. her first since the gop convention where they plagiarized first lady michelle obama. she wanted to talk about what she would do as first lady and
1:10 am
said one of her top priorities is battling cyber bullying. >> children and teenagers can be fragile. they are hurt and they are made fun of or made to feel less in looks or intelligence. our culture has gotten too mean and too rough. especially to children and teenagers. >> reporter: now one thing melania trump did not mention is her husband's use of twitter. donald trump uses it to hurl insults to people in the media. melania said she feels adults are better able to handle criticism. she wants to do more to protect children. it a speech heavy on what she wants to do as first lady. not too much on details of her husband. she has been a rare asset for her husband because she made it clear publicly and privately she would rather be home taking care

of their 10 year old son barron. and the economic news is due at 8:30 a.m. today. the jobs report expected to show 177,000 net new jobs. better than september. the jobless rate ticked down to 4.9%. it was 5% in september. half the rate at the height of the recession. wages expected to hold steady. up 2.6% over the past year. you like to see stronger wage growth. it has been slowly improving. democrats want a strong number feeling it will help hillary clinton's closing arguments on the economy. she tied herself to the president obama legacy. in his terms, the economy added 11 million new jobs. hiring is positive for 72 months in a row. but donald trump has blasted every jobs report since he started running. he called september anemic. he called the numbers phony.
1:12 am
he said the unemployment rate is higher than the government is reporting. various times in the campaigns, he said unemployment rate is 10% to 20%. this just in. the election is soon. it is tuesday. for complete coverage of that day -- basically we're on nonstop now until the thing is over. tuesday is the big day. on 24 staraight hours. >> the end is in sight for the candidates. hillary clinton and donald trump targeting key battleground states. what can we expect in the next four days? "early start" continues. who says i shouldn't have a soda everyday?

1:17 am
it is friday, guys. >> they are both smiling. >> it is friday morning. early. now you are counting in hours. i want to listen to the piece of sound from donald trump talking to veterans. i think this sound bite is in the ear of the beholder. people really hear different things when they hear donald trump talk about hillary clinton as the boss of people in the military. listen. >> you know when i look at the great admirals and the great generals and these great medal of honor recipients behind me, to think of her being their boss? i don't think so. and you know, they're incredible patriots. they would never say a thing, but i know what they're thinking. it's not for them. believe me.
1:18 am
>> so brian stelter, some women right away and men were like, please. a woman can't be this boss. others are like come on. a bunch of politically correct cry babies. this inspired both sides. >> it is true. it happens from time to time with donald trump. he always straddles that line. it is in the ear of the beholder. i'm sure at least some liberals will bring this up today. maybe clinton herself will go at this. it is entirely in the ear of the beholder. >> tal. >> absolutely. she is a woman. if he is going to refer to her by a pronoun. that pronoun will be her. donald trump has done this throughout the campaign. he intentionally is very vague and he uses a lot of innuendo and insinuation.
1:19 am
he intentionally leaves a lot open to interpretation. you could absolutely interpret this to be an attack about benghazi or e-mails or other attacks, he left it open to be interpreted as the first female commander in chief. that is why it is the eye of the beholder statement. >> since we're on the subject of political roarsch tests, melania trump. is it political malpractice having a trump raise the issue of being too mean on social media or an act of pure genius that we just don't understand. tal. >> those are my only two options? you know, it doesn't make a lot of sense in terms of an optics perspective. brian has made the point that she could be speaking to an audience that is not the beltway or reporters and that is true. at the same time, at this point
1:20 am
in the race where people are getting their news and local and national media, there is no way any report about this will not include probably high up in the story in the first few paragraphs the irony of the fact her husband is known for attacking people on social media. while the point she is making is valid and bullying on social media is a problem especially directed at young people. she is calling attention of a flaw of her husband. that is questionable move. >> i think it is a subtle jab or message to her husband. i don't know about you. this is the way my wife tells me to shape up. >> she gives national speeches? >> local speeches. there is something to be said for the better half in a marriage. suggesting to the husband how to adapt and change his ways. by the way, trump has not been tweeting insults and on the

attack on facebook. >> i want to know what he has to shape up about. brian's long list of flaws. guys, thank you so much. see you in a little bit. so a parade more than a century in the making. next. why do protein drinks taste chalky? then get worse? introducing protein shots from 5-hour energy. protein shots from 5-hour energy are smooth and tasty, and still deliver 21 grams of protein with 100 calories. they're great for workouts. so great that if you don't get up to fifteen percent more reps, more laps, more distance, we'll give you your money back - period. protein shots from 5-hour energy. great taste. 100 calories. 21 grams of protein.

clearer because donald trump -- don't boo. don't boo. don't boo. >> vote. >> come on. you guys know that. >> even for a south sider like president obama, the cubs breaking a 108-year curse is a big deal. the president calling joe maddon from air force one to congratulate him on the historic world series win and invite them to the white house before he leaves office. also on the call is deputy chief of staff and big cubs fan and today is championship friday in chicago. the city honoring the cubs with a victory parade. followed by a mass celebration rally in grant park. a lot of people in the obama administration who spent a lot of time in chicago.

you think about all those people. >> everybody is like next year is finally here. we have been saying that for 100 years. we have the election to get in the way of the baseball parade. a few days from now. what do the candidates hope to achieve? we have new developments overnight. come on back. but it doesn't cover everything. only about 80% of your part b medical expenses. the rest is up to you. so consider an aarp medicare supplement insurance plan, insured by unitedhealthcare insurance company. like all standardized medicare supplement insurance plans, they could save you in out-of-pocket medical costs. call today to request a free decision guide. with these types of plans, you'll be able to visit any doctor or hospital that accepts medicare patients... plus, there are no networks, and virtually no referrals needed. join the millions who have already enrolled in the only medicare supplement insurance plans endorsed by aarp...

donald trump suggests america's troops don't want to see hillary clinton become their boss. what exactly did he mean by that? hillary clinton slams donald trump for an endorsement his campaign actually condemns. and polls, we are watching polls. new polls have the race tightening in battleground states. oh, the map and the many, many ways you can play with the map. welcome back to "early start." i'm john berman. >> i'm christine romans. it is 31 minutes past the hour.
1:32 am
friday morning. just four days to go. brian stelter is starting to count hours now. donald trump takes a swipe at hillary clinton asking veterans to imagine her as their boss. hillary clinton accuses donald trump of dog whistle politics. both candidates are in pennsylvania and ohio today. it is 4:32 a.m. in the east. do you know where your election is? here's a hint. is really freaking close. national polls are ticking up for hillary clinton. there are new looks in key states that raise questions and blood pressure on both sides. new hampshire, a couple polls show it is tied. and georgia. a new poll from nbc news has donald trump ahead by just a wee single point there. joining us this morning is cnn political reporter eugene scott. let's start with new hampshire. this has people -- people have
1:33 am
said a long time. as long as hillary clinton wins pennsylvania and new hampshire, she cannot lose the election. if new hampshire is tied, all of a sudden, that math is problematic for her. >> it is. a few weeks ago, donald trump was having a hard time in new hampshire. that is because the headlines were negative because he was faced with the alleged sexual misconduct assaults. right now, the news cycle has shifted to hillary clinton. >> it is so interesting that is the unique quality of this campaign. if you are talking about somebody, it is bad for them. both candidates. if you are getting air time, it is bad for you. >> all publicity is not good publicity. >> let's talk about the georgia polls. donald trump, all of his permutations of map include georgia to win the white house. what is happening in the polls? >> donald trump will probably get georgia. georgia is one place and atlanta is another. there are a lot of black voters
1:34 am
and millennial voters and brown voters in atlanta. it is looking more purple as the demographics change. >> you see georgia close and no one campaigning there. roslyn carter is campaigning there in the next few days. you see why north carolina is close. eugene scott, great to have you with us on the final election friday. hillary clinton starts the noon rally in pittsburgh today and then to detroit and cleveland. thursday, she was shoring up support in north carolina rallying the faithful alongside bernie sanders. targeting donald trump and courting african-american voters. cnn's brianna keilar has the latest from raleigh. >> reporter: john and christine, donald trump's deputy campaign manager has a path through north carolina and ohio and iowa.
1:35 am
the key to a democratic victory here on election day is the african-american vote. hillary clinton has been out performing donald trump by a wide margin. she not doing as well as president obama did in 2012 and 2008. that's why he's been here making a pitch for her and why hillary clinton made this pitch to north carolinians today. >> he has spent the entire campaign offering a dog whistle to his most hateful supporters. he retweets white supremacists and spreads racially tinged conspiracy theories. you better believe he is being heard loudly and clearly. >> reporter: it is a mad dash for hillary clinton. she will be in pennsylvania, michigan and ohio today. ohio with some help and star power from jay-z and a focus for her on philadelphia over the weekend and into election day. she will be in philadelphia with katy perry on saturday and
1:36 am
accompanied by her husband and chelsea and president obama and first lady michelle obama in philadelphia on monday. john and christine. >> brianna keilar, thanks so much. donald trump starts the day in new hampshire and on to ohio and pennsylvania. in north carolina, donald trump had a late night event there and he went off script with military leaders behind him. he made a comment about whether these leaders would ever accept hillary clinton as their boss. listen to this. >> you know when i look at these great admirals and these great generals and great medal of honor recipients behind me. to think of her being their boss? i don't think so. and you know they're incredible patriots. they would never say a thing, but i know what they're

thinking. it's not for them. believe me. >> her being their boss. what did he mean? tweet us. let us know what you think. it is being discussed this morning. donald trump praised the bravery of veterans. let's bring in jim acosta for latest. >> reporter: john and christine, donald trump tried to make a comeback in the last week of the campaign at the rally in north carolina. he again attacked hillary clinton for the e-mail controversy. he saluted military veterans and at one point talking about his bravery. >> they are so much more brave than me. i'm brave in other ways. i'm financially brave. big deal. >> reporter: if there is one subject trump is hesitant to touch is president obama. trump only responded by saying the president should be back at the white house doing his job. a far cry from the more personal attacks on the president in the

past. john and christine. >> so melania trump held a rally outside philadelphia. the town might as well have been named irony. it was one of the more surprising speeches of the campaign. she suggested our culture is too cruel on social media. that too often tweets and posts are based on looks and intelligence. our dana bash noted has melania ever met trump? let's get more from sara murray. >> reporter: good morning, john and christine. melania trump traveling to the philadelphia area to deliver a speech her first since she gave the remarks at the gop convention where they plagiarized first lady michelle obama. now melania wanted to talk about what she would do as first lady and one of her top priorities is battling cyber bullying. >> children and teenagers can be fragile. they are hurt and they are made

fun of or made to feel less in looks or intelligence. our culture has gotten too mean and too rough. especially to children and teenagers. >> reporter: now one thing melania trump did not mention is her husband's use of twitter. donald trump regularly uses it to hurl insults at people in the media. melania said she feels adults are better to handle the critici criticism. she wants to do more to protect children. it was a speech heavy on what she would do as first lady. she has been a rare asset for donald trump on the campaign trail. she made it clear she would rather be moment taking care of their 10-year-old son barron. >> thank you. the big piece of economic news due this morning. at 8:30 a.m. eastern, the

government jobs report is expected to show 177,000 new positions. that is better than september. the jobless rate forecast ticking down to 4.9%. it was 5% in september. cut in half from the worst days of the recession. more people are starting to look for work. that will maybe push that jobless rate up. these are wages here. wages up about 2.6% year over year. democrats want a strong number here in the jobs report feeling it will help hillary clinton's closing arguments on the economy. she tied herself to president obama's legacy. in his two terms, the economy added 11 million new jobs and hiring stayed positive for 72 months a row, but wages are not growing. donald trump blasted every jobs report since he started running. he called september's reading anemic. he claims the unemployment rate is higher than the government is reporting. time is running out. we'll talk about what the

if you are an undecided voter, a, how can you be undecided and b we have four days left. joined by senior media correspondent and host of reliable sources is brian stelter. we have in washington, d.c., tal kopan. the president is going to north carolina for two events today. the president, if you have been watching these events is relishing in the last lap on the campaign trail. this is not all hope and change by any means. he is going after donald trump hard.
1:46 am
listen to this. >> the most frustrating thing is some of his support is coming from working folks. people say well, you know he will be our voice. are you serious? you don't see him hanging out with working people. unless they're cleaning his room. or mowing the fairways on his golf club. >> this time, tal, it's personal. >> absolutely personal. keep in mind, it is personal on a few levels. for a lot of this election the obama legacy so to speak is on the line. think about his signature achievement. obamacare. it is talked about arguably more than any other policy other than immigration and it bears his name in the lingo. he feels like his policies are on the line. it is clear from the way he speaks he feels his legacy beyond policy is on the line. you know, he was the first african-american president.
1:47 am
he was the barrier breaker in that regard. so much rhetoric on race and how minorities feel. he made a clear pitch to minorities on the trail. if you want to vote for me, you want to vote for hillary. he has made this personal. he is embracing that and running full steam ahead. >> i say donald trump made it personal when he questioned where he was born for months and years. even the very origin of the president. >> when we hear about we need to remember birtherism. he talked about the fate of the republic rests in the hands. >> the world. >> what's incredible is he is challenging the voters saying don't let me down. that's the subtext of the speeches now. >> where do we go from here, brian? i think the clinton team will end up on monday night in
1:48 am
philadelphia. they've got every minute matters. every appearance matters. every rally matters. the polls are tightening. >> the candidates are mostly on the east coast. new hampshire, north carolina, florida, pennsylvania. >> trump's going all the way to reno. he knows that is part of his key map. i have been pressing the clinton team on this. why are they still working so hard for ohio? i understand that it's a state that barack obama won twice and it is fairly close. it is not essential to their map. they are putting resources in it tonight especially with the rally with jay-z. >> it is interesting. the clinton campaign has been struggling for a few weeks in how to deploy resources because it has so much. it has had very successful fund raising and high profile surrogates. it has a lot of places to play on the map. we think politics is about prose
1:49 am
and poetry. it is not. hillary clinton has a lot more opportunities to take this thing. she could write off ohio. she may play to force donald trump to spend resources there. polls have shown it within the margin of error. it is not completely gone. she has been in arizona. another state where she trailed. they may be forcing donald trump's hand. it is hard to make the calculations. you want to go as many places as you can. you also want to be strategic. it must be a tough challenge for the clinton campaign when they have the opportunity to be in a lot of places to really pick and choose. >> the tighter the race, the worst the day after. if clinton is the prevailing candidate and wins on tuesday night, but by a few electoral votes. that will make a difference in what donald trump says and the reaction to the election. the difference between 272 and 320.
1:50 am
that makes a big difference. i wonder if the calculus is picking the toss-up states and attempt to turn them blue to run up the score at end of the day. >> they are just trying to win. >> just settling on winning. donald trump finishing the campaign in new hampshire. going back to new hampshire on monday night. both pennsylvania and new hampshire have in common is there is no real early voting. you go to those states late because it is late. those are the states you campaign in, tal. >> absolutely. it is pointed out to me that hillary clinton is strategic about timing visits to states when the states are actually going to be voting. you want momentum through the finish line. when i said politics is math. the area that hillary clinton has been able to put a lot more resources into for many months now is a turn-out operation. donald trump has almost been
1:51 am
relying on the republican party for his turn-out operation. you better believe when she is going to the states, it is not about flying in and doing a speech and flying out. there are extensive operations here to get the voters that actually need to vote to the polls. it is an incredible ground game that is playing out on both sides throughout the country. >> they are bombarded with television ads. if you live in pennsylvania or ohio, sorry. we learned this week, brian, the clinton team is spending money in reliably blue states. they want to shut out donald trump in the states he thinks he would have to win. >> partly because they have the money. i was amused to get text messages from the campaign asking for a few dollars. i suppose they can spend it on tv ads. think about monday night. the philadelphia rally and closing argument by hillary clinton. it was the site of obama's speeches. pennsylvania is crucial in the
1:52 am
final days. think of that as a television event. the whole country will be watching. trump and pence will be together. and clinton and her surrogates in pennsylvania for a concert rally. it will be a heck of a made for tv spectacle. >> it is clinton and barack obama and michelle obama. >> the past, present and they hope the future. >> brian and tal. thank you. it is a popular product for surfers and bikers. investors are not impressed. how one stock is heading off a cliff here when we get a check of cnn money stream next. tein d t y ? introducing protein shots from 5-hour energy. protein shots from 5-hour energy are smooth and tasty, and still deliver 21 grams of protein with 100 calories. they're great for workouts. so great that if you don't get up to fifteen percent more reps,
