this is cnn breaking news. >> welcome to "early start." i'm boris sanchez. >> i'm christine romans. it is monday, november 21st. 4:00 a.m. in the east. four police officers shot in the line of duty in the span of 24 hours. here is what we know right now. two of the incidents took place in missouri, one in st. louis and one in kansas city. two other officers shot in s sanibel, florida. one in texas. a 46-year-old police officer was in his patrol car and shot twice in the face by a gunman in a silver car and opened fire and

sped off. that suspect later killed in a shootout with police. the 20-year veteran police officer, married information fa three, is in critical condition and is expected to survive. >> this officer was not involved in a traffic stop. he was not trying to pull this car over. this officer was driving down the road and ambushed by an individual who pulled a gun on him and shot out the police officer's window. >> all officers in st. louis will now ride two to a patrol car until further notice. and in kansas city, in gladstone, missouri, a police officer was shot and the suspect was shot. the fop tweeting the officer is expected to survive. the suspect's condition and identity is yet to be confirmed. >> west of ft. myers, a police officer was sitting in his

patrol car following a routine traffic stop and someone pulled up and began firing. the officer was taken to the hospital and released. this is the first time in the history of the sanibel police department that an officer was shot. and the shooting death of the 50-year-old police officer was a targeted intentional killing. benjamin marconi was targeted outside a traffic stop. hours ago, san antonio police released a picture of a man who may have information about the murder. we have more from polo sandoval. >> reporter: police in the middle of the manhunt. trying to track down the person for persons responsible for the shooting death of the 20-year veteran of the force. the traffic stop outside the police department, filling out a

citation of a driver and a third vehicle pulled up along him and the person getting out of the car and walking up to the passenger side of the patrol car and shooting the officer. the police chief saying the gunman shot the officer again and the search is on for the individual. san antonio police with the latest on the investigation. >> witness reports indicate the suspect to be a dark complexion male. wearing a gray shirt and gray pants. we have descriptions of with and without facial hair. we are looking into all motives. all sapd police are looking into the investigation. we considered suspect to be extremely dangerous and clear

at the trump golf course in new jersey. he has latest. >> reporter: boris and christine, meeting after meeting. cabinet potential official after potential official. it was all about reading the tea leaves and trying to get a sense of who will fill out the top positions in the trump administration. the president-elect greeting every one of the visitors. on sunday, focus on two individuals. chris christie and rudy giuliani. one of the most early endorsements of trump campaign. he has been fallen out of favor in recent weeks. now this leaves a lot of question if chris christie will have a job in the trump administration. all signsow are pointing to no. not so much for rudy giuliani. a close confidant and aide to the president-elect.

million. i can tell you something having covered wilbur ross over the years. he wants to create the workers who can fit the jobs of today and tomorrow. skills. when you talk about the skills gap, he is aware of other problems along the pipe lyline n to education. he thought deeply on the issues. another cabinet candidate that donald trump is very enthusiastic about is the potential defense secretary. james mattis. they met for over an hour on saturday. afterwards, the president-elect characterized the retired four-star general as the real deal and true general's general. a source tells cnn no decision has been made, but trump is quote leaning in mattis' direction. donald trump says he will live in the white house once he takes the oath of office, but

donald trump clearly back in charge of his twitter feed. he spend the weekend escalating the feud with the cast of "hamilton" after friday's performance with the message to

vice president-elect mike pence. he listened and left the theater. in a barrage of tweets, trump said the comments were rude and dehe mannmanded an apology. >> reporter: while mike pence was not offended by the message friday night, somebody was. that person being president-elect trump. despite having a lot on his plate, strhaving to set his political agenda, he tweeted not once, not twice, but four times about the ongoing controversy. even going as far as harassment and saying it was disrespectful. the theater should be a safe space. mike pence said he enjoyed the music musical. >> when we arrived, we heard a few boos and cheers.

breaking overnight. a confrontation with hundreds of dakota access pipeline protesters and police. authoriti authorities are calling it a riot. people are trying to reach a

nearby highway. one person has been arrested. protesters claim they were attacked by police with water cannons in freezing temperatures. turning to syria. it is being called the heaviest bombardment in five years. more than 300 people have been killed since the offensive start up a week ago. they knocked out all hospitals in eastern aleppo. barrel bombs said to be full of chlorine gas. cnn's jomana karadsheh has the latest from amman, jordan. jomana, what do we know about the bombing? >> reporter: christine, we have been speaking to people, residents of eastern aleppo and activists. this is the worst the situation has been in eastern aleppo. if you look at the besieged rebel held neighborhoods, they

have been pounded by air strikes. the indiscriminate barrel bombs dropped on the civilian neighborhoods in addition to the intense artillery shells. we are talking about hundreds of people killed and nearly 1,000 people injured this past week. as you also mentioned, there are reports of at least one incident of a suspected poison gas being used that led to the killing of a family of six. we have seen hospitals attacked. four hospitals in eastern al lep aleppo. schools, both in the east and in the regime controlled west, have been hit. we heard this is a preliminary operation in eastern aleppo. there is a ground push and the

civilians continue to pay the heaviest price in the conflict, christine, always with the possibility of mass starvation. a real possibilililitypossibili. >> a quarter of a million people. maybe this is a naive question. these people have nowhere to go, right? they are trapped in the city. >> reporter: this is the really difficult part to try and understand, christine. we are not on the ground to be able to verify this. also, some of the residents, the 250,000 people, some will tell you we have nowhere else to go. aleppo is our home. we have nowhere else to go. people say they do not trust the syrian regime and their humanitarian corridors. they don't believe they will be allowed safe passage. and we have heard fighting ongoing around the areas.

missouri. one in st. louis. the other in kansas city. two others were shot. one in sanibel, florida and one in san antonio, texas. in st. louis, the officer was in his patrol car and he was shot twice by a gunman in the face who pulled up alongside him in a silver car and sped off. that suspect was later killed by police in a shootout. the officer is expected to survive. >> this officer was not involved in the traffic stop. this officer was not trying to pull this car over. this officer was drying doiving the road and ambushed by an individual who pulled a gun on him from inside his car and shot out the police officer's window. >> unless further notice, all officers will ride two to a patrol car. the wounded officer was able to speak to officers.

and ten minutes outside kansas city, a police officer was shot during a traffic stop. the suspect was shot. kansas city's fop tweeting the officer is expected to survive. the suspect's condition and identity have yet to be confirmed. in sanibel, florida, an officer wounded by a drive-by shooting. he was in his patrol car and someone pulled up and started firing. that suspect was taken into custody a short time later after exchanging gunfire. this is the first time that one of their officers has been shot. >> in san antonio, the shooting death of the 50-year-old police officer was a targeted killing. benjamin marconi was gunned down. san antonio police released this

all right. donald trump apparently back in charge of his twitter feed. the president-elect escalating a twitter feud with the broadway musical "hamilton." after the performance, cast members read a message to vice president-elect mike pence in the audience. they called themselves diverse america and alarmed and anxious and the trump administration won't protect them and their families. pe pence listened calmly and left the theater. but trump demanded an apology calling the statements rude.

activists on the ground in eastern aleppo saying there are renewed air strikes today on several neighborhoods of eastern aleppo. there are several casualties. we will monitor the situation. this comes after the past six days of what has been described by all accounts as unprecedented bombardment of the besieged neighborhoods of eastern aleppo. we have seen neighborhoods pounded by hundreds of air strikes. the indiscriminate barrel bombs dropped on them in addition to the heavy artillery shelling. we had reports of a suspected poison gas. some say it was chlorine gas used in one instance where a family of six reported to have been killed in the attack. we have seen four hospitals attacked in the past week. the little health care that is left in that city now on the

verge of complete collapse. we have seen schools bombed on both sides of the frontline. the regime says this a prop preliminary operation on the push. the civilians are paying the heavy price with hundreds killed and wounded and facing the possibility of mass starvation. boris. >> and jomana, how does this come to a halt? is there any indication that there is any progress or peace efforts or talks to slow down the bombardment in aleppo? >> reporter: we heard officials say this needs to be resolved diplomatically. it cannot be a military solution. we have seen diplomacy fail over and over again with aleppo and

syria. we know the united nations is trying to work with all sides involved in the conflict. whether the syrian regime or rebels or russians to try to work on at least a humanitarian plan for eastern aleppo. so far, there seems to be no progress that we know of. we heard them say the rebels have agreed in principle to the humanitarian plan, but they are still waiting for the green light from the syrian regime and russians. boris. >> five years into the conflict. bloodshed and no progress made. jomana, thank you. we are expected to learn if employees at the o'hare airport will go on strike later this week. it is expected to learn later on this morning if they will walk off the job. employes voted last thursday to trying. they are pushing for a $15

missouri. one in st. louis and the other in kansas city. two other officers were shot. one in sanibel, florida. the other in san antonio, texas. in st. louis, a 46-year-old sergeant was in his patrol car and shot twice by a gunman who pulled up alongside him and opened fire and sped off. that suspect was later killed by police. the officer is in critical, but stable condition. he is expected to survive. >> this officer was not involved in the traffic stop. he was not trying to pull this car over. this officer was driving down the road and ambushed by an individual who pointed a gun at him from inside of his car and shot out the police officer's window. >> until further notice, all officers in st. louis will ride two to a patrol car. the wounded sergeant spoke to fellow officers, but could not give a description of the shooter.
