will be filled by china. what the tpp did, boris, you can argue the pros and cons whether it is good or bad for american jobs. it did create an american-led level playing field in environmental standards and labor standards in the 12 countries. if they were in the tpp, they had to reach certain standards for expeporexport. that is all gone. china can step into the breach and lead by the sheer says of the economy with the next round in asia. that is not to say china will do bad negotiations. they believe in a multilateral trade platform. president-elect trump says as i s say, this is potentially dis disast disastrous for the u.s. what is more disturbing is not just pulling out of the tpp, but

how will this change with the trump administration? let's bring in cnn's matt rivers. the trump campaign said part of the reason china kept pushing into the south china sea is obama did not stand up to him. the implication is he would. how is this being received there? >> reporter: well, china's leaders are just as curious as the rest of the world as what the trump administration plans to do when it crafts the policy toward china. when donald trump talked about china on the kpacampaign trail, was about the economics about all of this. the chinese economy heard the u.s. economy in the words of the president-elect. we heard him talk less about the military side. and so really in order to determine what he will do next, we have to look for clues. he did talk about the south china sea a little bit, but if

donald trump follows through with the rhetoric where he says put america first. if he focuses domestically, maybe he pulling back from the south china sea and doesn't engage as the obama administration did. that leaves china the ability to perhaps further its own goals of building up the artificial islands. you have to look at who the trump administration macy consit of. general flynn has been anti-china and one of the top defenders for another post. james mattis. so boris, we have a lot of speculation right now. there are a few clues here and there, but this is one of the big open-ended questions facing the trump administration as they are set to take power. >> and one question of many. that and the tpp. matt rivers from beijing, thank you. at least three people injured after a 6.9 magnitude

so you don't have really cheap labor exploited to the detriment of american workers. a lot in here. it looks like it is all but dead. >> reporter: absolutely. it does. and don't forget. it is also getting rid of 18,000 tariffs. it opens up 11 markets for u.s. exports. it opens up further, i should say. many of the markets are already open to u.s. exports. allows american made goods to get deeper into the countries. we can't say at this stage whether as donald trump says that this is going to be a disaster for american jobs if it went through because there will also be an opening up of the u.s. economy to the other 11 countries. what we can say is that the tpp as it stood, christine, was as you said, a lot of it was about protecting labor rights and environmental issues. it did have its critics. it is a contentious policy and

there has been a lot of people in japan and australia and other countries expressed concerns about it. where it leaves us now and this deal is effectively dead. there is a vacuum as the prime minister of new zealand said in asia pacific in the trade economic policy. that vacuum is more than likely to be filled by china. china has said in response to the trump information that it wants to see a multilateral as in many countries involved in one big overarching trade deal. it doesn't want to see a fragmentation. that is what donald trump is talking about. the chinese said we want one big deal. how that one big deal looks with china in the driving seat is the question. >> it is fascinating to see what the trump cabinet looks like and who handles trade and who runs treasury. that is a clearly the trade

donald trump. post election and on the campaign trail. trump did not shy away from talking about china on the campaign trail. it was mainly rhetoric on the economy here. when it comes to the military, we didn't hear any specific policy proposals. that leads us to try to guess and read the tea leaves to see what the trump administration would do. you are hearing one he disengages from china. pulls back from the south china sea and let's china continue with that artificial island building. because he is focused on other areas and turning more attention to iran and isis. the flip side is look at the people he is putting around him. general flynn in the national security advisor. china is an enemy of the united states. one of the top candidates james mattis said the united states should pursue a strategy of counter balancing of china's
