fidel castro's funeral set for sunday. over the next six days, cubans will celebrate his life in a series of events. his ashes will begin a journey 700 miles across the island nation. more from patrick oppmann in havana. >> reporter: havana still is grieving the passing of fidel castro. no music played and no sale of alcohol. they want to give the picture of the world of a country in deep mourning. we have seen candlelight villgi. people who are grief-stricken by the former president's loss. others seem indifferent. i don't remember seeing less people on the streets.

people seem to stay in the homes during the nine-day mourning period. there will be a 21-gun salute to honor his life. he was cremated and ashes expected to be on display in revolution square. we expect raul castro and other officials to attend and really speak to the nation about fidel castro. then from there, his ashes will be transported across the island. 700 miles in total. on that route they arecreating journey he took to power. they will salute the head of state who was so controversial. he will get to the second largest city in san antonio ati.

miguel, christine. >> thank you, patrick. the scene is anything but somber in south florida. cuban exiles dancing in the streets. waving flags and banging pots and pans. cnn's boris sanchez tells us many have waited decades. >> reporter: christine and miguel, it is hard to believe the response from people in cuba and here in miami is the response to the death of the same person. there is a dee jay set up to play music and some holding up signs of loved ones who could not be here. many say they have been looking forward to this for a long time. no better story captures the divide with the passing of fidel castro than elian gonzalez.

claiming two areas in aleppo. pushing the civilian death toll to over 500 in just the past two weeks. that's raising concerns a long ground assault is about to hit high gear. cnn's fred pleitgen has the latest from london. good morning, fred. >> reporter: good morning, christine. it looks like it has hit high gear. this looks it could be a pivotal moment in the syrian civil war. it is interesting and surprising, frankly, to see the pace at which the rebels are losing ground in aleppo. the reports we are getting that the syrian government has taken over eight neighborhoods in the past 24 hours. other reports indicate they may have lost the entire northeastern part of the city in the last 24 hours. it seems the government forces are moving quickly. as you mentioned, a lot of civilians killed and wounded.

a lot of civilians at risk. apparently up to 250,000 people trapped in eastern aleppo. we got information from unicef yesterday and they say it could be up to 100,000 children trapped in there as well. a dire situation. many people are fleeing to the government held areas. some all to kurdish held areas. it is certainly a devastating situation for the civilians on the ground. it looks like it is a collapse by the rebel forces which have held out in aleppo since 2012. >> we have been talking about this for years. we have watched pictures of people fleeing for years. on the diplomatic front, is there any feeling as though anybody is doing anything to stop this history from unfolding? to change the course of history? >> reporter: the u.s. administration is still trying

to get some diplomatic, i won't say solution, but diplomatic pause in aleppo going. it seems at this point in time, the chances are very, very slim. what you had over the past couple of weeks is the russians have said they would stop bombing the eastern districts of aleppo. they set up humanitarian corridors for civilians to get out of the area. not many civilians did that because they don't trust the syrian regime. they believe they could be captured and killed. a lot of diplomacy has been tried, but failed. at this time, the russian government and syrian government are looking for a military solution if you will to the crisis in eastern aleppo. it is causing a lot of agony for the people trapped inside. >> military solutions. sometimes that feels like an oxymoron. fred pleitgen, thank you. breaking overnight in the

philippines. improvised explosive device found near the embassy in man a manila. it was placed by a person riding in a taxi. police consider it an act of terrorism. the ied had the same design in the deadly marketplace bombing in september that killed 14 people. the army corps of engineers is asking people to move to the free speech zone by december 5th for the dakota pipeline area. native tribes and activists have clashed with authorities in recent days. many fear the pipeline could contaminate the missouri river and disrupt tribal burial grounds. it is cold out there. there are all these people who camped out. these are inside pictures here. encampments outside where they

government offensive is going into high gear at this point in time. as you mentioned, a lot of air strikes and a lot of people killed. also a lot of territory lost by the rebels. most of the areas have been held by the rebel forces since 2012. now they're losing them quickly. the syrian government has made more advances in the past 24 hours over the past four years. they say they have taken back ten districts of eastern aleppo. there are reports saying the rebels have now lost all of the northeast of aleppo. that is significant. eastern aleppo is the last urban strong hold that the rebels have. we could witness a major turning point in the syrian civil war in favor of bashar al assad. all of this with devastation for the civilians on the ground there. the u.n. saying there could be up to 250,000 people trapped. you mentioned some fleeing.

unicef says they believe of those 250,000, 100,000 may be children. for them, the situation is even worse than the adults trapped. miguel. >> the dynamic here, fred, if there is no place for the rebels to go and u.s. and russians cannot come up with some sort of deal to how you go forward here, where does this thing go? >> reporter: i think a lot of it right now seems to be looking in the direction that the syrian government and the russians and their backers, iranians and hezbollah are looking for the solution to the situation in aleppo. they will fight until the rebels lose the territory. the russians and syrian regime set up humanitarian corridors for civilians to go to other rebel held areas in more than western syria and civilians to
