candidate or campaign. >> if the fbi had surveillance order, would that be information you would know? >> yes. i would know that. something like this, absolutely. >> more now from white house correspondent athena jones. she is covering the president from west palm beach, florida. >> reporter: the president spent the weekend in mar-a-lago. it was a series of tweets launched before sunrise that dominated the headlines. in the tweets, president trump without offering evidence accused president obama of having his quote wires tapped in trump tower. those explosive allegations prompting a vigorous denial from president obama and repeated calls to provide evidence to back up his claims. rather than providing that evidence, the white house is

calling on congressional committees that are investigating the russian activity and ties between trump aides and russian officials. those committees are asked to look into quote whether executive branch powers were abused in 2016. now democrats and republicans are asking what the president is basing accusations on. >> i'm not sure what it is he is talking about. perhaps the president has information not yet able to us or the public. if it is true, we will find out. if it isn't, he will have to explain. >> the president has called for congressional investigations into the allegations he made starting yesterday morning. i would expect that he is going to want to provide our committee with any evidence that he has. >> reporter: so there you have a republican saying she expects the president to provide evidence backing up his claims if there is any. this comes as we learn late

sunday night that the fbi asked the justice department on saturday to refute the president's assertion that president obama had ordered wire tapping. christine. dave. >> athena jones in west palm beach. let's discuss this with senior media correspondent brian stelter and greg valliere. thanks both of you. let's start with you, brian. walk me through the evidence trail here of where the president got this idea. we are talking about a web site on a radio show and another web site and in the president's brain and on twitter. >> this seems to start on thursday. an idea for a while that president obama is doing whatever he can do to undermine new president trump. mark levine took this to a new level. saying a silent issue.

then rush limbaugh and breitbart. rece published a story and circulated in the west wing. according to jeff zeleny, this infuriated president trump. we saw him tweet about it. he said he just found on about the theory and shared it on twitter. the best evidence shows this was coming from mark levine and breitbart. they have seucceeded. saying this is all obama's fault. >> this is a president who derides media reports using anonymous sources. this man based on anonymous sources. greg, it is one thing how big a story it is if it is true. what about if it is false? >> i'm not sure it damages him with his base. his base is in a different

universe. he can make a case, guys, that the obama administration intelligence community is out to get him. i think you may not believe it, but that is a case that he can make. frankly, i think the bigger problem for him is this is still another distraction. we are getting into spring now. we have to start talking about obamacare and tax reform and all of these issues that he wants to get done. he keeps stepping on his message and all of these big issues keep getting moved. >> greg, i'm glad you bring that up. in a way, his team saying look at what we accomplished. we are doing more to transform the economy. president trump himself changed the story line. we would talk today about the sessions stuff could have petered out eventually. maybe a little kate mckinnon on snl. the president himself has

stepped on that message. >> christine, today we would talk about the new immigration rules and obamacare fight reaching a crescendo in the house. all of these are obscured by the charges he made over the weekend. >> to be fair, we are trying to talk about those things. these things matter to people and business. >> to be fair, former bush attorney general says he thinks he is right. there was surveillance conducted at the behest of the attorney general. who is speaking for the president ins terms of showing the evidence where this came from? >> president trump is declassifier in cheechief. instead, sean spicer says there will be no comment from the white house. that is not quite true. some aides were tweeting about this. criticizing the media. spicer will not have an on-camera briefing today.

free world and potentially have to lead the world in international crisis, how do you trust the information? >> the president has the ability to be the most informed person in the world. he has the agencies at his disposal. fbi and nsa and cia. when he turns to breitbart or mark levine's radio show. or the most credible sources rather than government information, it certainly leaves a lot of people confused and caused weekend of chaos. you have "the washington post" saying 17 sources seething at the cable news coverage. this is the disarray in the white house. caused by his own tweets. >> greg, we have three senators on the intelligence committee saying there is no evidence. what is the next move?

the diepartment of jusof justin? justice? >> i think one of the key stories is how many defect? a lot more like marco rubio feel this guy is becoming a political liability. we are not there yet. i do think that is the next big story? >> greg, obamacare. we are looking for overhaul this week. can the president and paul ryan hold the conservatives together? that is the other big story. >> he needs to inject himself into the debate. it could stall out in the house despite paul ryan. a lot of conservatives don't like the refundable tax credits. i think trump has to get involved. does he have that time? we hear stories who goes next? priebus? spicer? there is all this intrigue within the white house. i think that will preclude trump from playing a bill role on

substantially revised order. cnn's justice reporter laura jarrett has more from washington this morning. laura, is there an update on timing or how will the version of the eo as they are known be different from the first? >> reporter: christine, we expect to see the new executive order as early as today. we expect to see the green card holders and those with existing visas excluded. we heard several top members of the cabinet wanted iraq removed from the list of the previously banned countries. that is something to watch for as well. christine, we expect to see the old order revoked. despite the issues we heard about keeping the old one on a dual track with the new one. >> the heart of this, laura, how will the delays for the new order undermine the rational it is imperative to national

security? >> reporter: this is interesting, dave. to the extent the administration took over a month to rewrite the travel ban, no judge would blame them. if they delayed this rollout for some political reason connected to the speech or otherwise, that could come back to bite them the minute the government lawyers use emergency in court. >> and various lawsuits with the first executive order. where does those suits stand? >> reporter: lawyers at the justice department tried to get the active cases put on hold rewashir reworking the order. several judges said no. the question is what happens when the new executive order comes down? do they start over or do they argue this is just like the old one? christine. dave. >> thank you, laura. fun is not the word.

the united states strongly condemning the latest ballistic missile by north korea. warning it will defend itself and use the range of abilities at its disposal against a growing threat. the north koreans test firing four ballistic missiles into the sea of japan last night. three landing within 200 miles of japan's coast. let's get the latest from cnn's paula hancocks in seoul, south korea this morning. good morning. important how this launch differs from those in the recent

past. >> reporter: dave, what we know from the four missiles this morning, according to the u.s. and south korea is they went about 600 miles in distance. they also went as high as 160 miles plus. that shows the range is much further. ago according to one official. reports suggest this is an intermediate missile. we have not had confirmation yet. washington and seoul and tokyo poring over the data. we have seen the range before. not recently. we have seen some relative restraint from north korea before the u.s. election with one previous missile a few weeks ago. that again was a missile that a to experts. it was harder to track.

the white house possibly getting a chance to change the narrative today as aides prepare to announce the travel ban. we had false starts on this before. we are told as early as today is coming. the order delayed in an effort to keep the focus on good press for the address to congress by the president. cnn justice reporter laura jarrett has more from washington. is there an update on timing and how does this version differ from the first? >> reporter: we expect to see the executive order rolled out as soon as today, dave. the changes are the green card holders and those with existing
