violence of the vietnam war. on the other end, venezuelans were the most pessimistic with only 10% saying in their country was better. thanks to all of you for being part of my program this week. see you next week. >> thanks for joining me on a sunday afternoon. i'm dave briggs. just two more days until alabama voters go to the polls, both candidates in the vinyl sprint for votes. president trump stumping for republican roy moore and even recorded a robo call for moore's campaign des pate molestation allegations facing moore today. he claims he doesn't even know the women making the accusations. >> i do not know any of the women who charged me with sexual allegations. molestation. i did not know any of the women.
11:01 am
when i saw these pictures on the advertisements of my opponent, i did not recognize any of those women. i did not know them. i have written cards, graduation cards and have known families and a lot of people throughout my life, but these allegations are completely false. i did not date underage women. i did not molest anyone. these allegations are false. >> that coming up also. moore's challenger doug jones courting the african-american vote. cory booker campaigning for jones. . we have team coverage of this critical race. the president is in west palm beach. covering the doug jones campaign, we will start with kaylee hartung covering roy moore who has no events scheduled today. nothing since tuesday. kaylie, what is moore's campaign doing in the final stretch to get out the vote?
11:02 am
>> as a member of moore's staff told me, if moore had it this way, there would be no get out the vote effort on a suspected because it's the lord's day. the more he has let go of that. today launching out of this field office, people will be going door-to-door for the moore campaign, but the thought is they will be doing it between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. local after folks have gotten home from the morning church service and before they head to an evening service. making phone calls is not the priority. they want to get face-to-face with voters. when i asked about the plan for this campaign tomorrow on monday the day before election day, the strategists i talked to said he was not comfortable sharing the details they are in the process of working out because he doesn't want the jones campaign to get wind of the areas they will be targeting. a lot has been made of the fact that we haven't seen roy moore since last tuesday since he held
11:03 am
that spirited event alongside steve bannon. next time we will see moore will be tomorrow. another event with bannon in midland city and in south alabama. today moore is spending the afternoon with friends and volunteers at a christmas party in montgomery. >> fewer than 10 events in the last month. let's go to alex who is covering the doug jones camp. what is the jones campaign strategy as we enter the final few days here? >> reporter: in stark contrast to what kaylie was saying, this campaign is firing on all cylinders. this is doug jones's hq. a height of activity and people all over the place crowding into conference rooms and in the kitchen who are phone banking. this is a campaign that is trying to squeeze every vote possible. they had four events yesterday
11:04 am
and four more today. is starting in just an hour to launch the get out the vote effort. they will launch the raves of canvassers to get as many votes as possible. we can discern two things. moore feels comfortable with his passionate base of support on tuesday. doug jones feels there are a lot of votes still to get whether from moderate republicans, undecideds, women turned off by the allegations and in particular from african americans. we have seen a pointed strategy to get the african-american vote and some of the biggest names were african-americans and they came down and we have seen duvall patrick in selma, the former massachusetts governor and kory booker with doug jones at a historically black college and cory booker will be with doug jones in just under an hour's time. as much as this ticketic has
11:05 am
been about targeting the african-american electorate, the message that jones has been speak being at all of his campaign stops has been consistent across the board. a lot is about the perception of alabama. ache a listen to what he had to say. >> a lot of people are saying this is an election about we are alabama. what do we want to be? i'm not sure i agree with that. i think the question is not who do we want to be, but who are we? that's the question. who are we as we give this election to the face of the nation. people look from all over. >> now doug jones has said that roy moore is an embarrassment to the people of alabama. something we heard from democratic voters and a number of republican voter who is have crossed over. he feels that the notion that
11:06 am
roy moore is an embarrassment is one of the strongest argument as doug jones tries to become the first democratic senator in a quarter century. dave? >> we don't hear a lot about his politics, but that is the thing. the president's big push for roy moore. first he led a campaign rally just 25 miles from the alabama border and in the mobile tv market. there he gave a full throated endorsement of the accused child molester and now the president recorded a robo call, urging voters in alabama to vote for moore. cnn correspondent abby philipp with the president in west palm beach, florida. why is this race so crucial for the president? >> it's all about the votes for president trump. he is very concerned about making sure he doesn't lose a
11:07 am
crucial senate vote as a result of the senate race. he is going against his own party, going against mitch mcconnell and including the senior senator from alabama, richard shelby who say roy moore does not belong in the u.s. senate. the key reason for this is because the president as he said publicly and privately doubts moore's accusers and does believe we should take into consideration that moore said the accusations are not true. the president is concerned about the prospects of the agenda. he is close to getting his tax bill and near his home in mar a lago, he is playing golf today with another u.s. senator, lindsey graham talking about taxes and the budget according to the white house. another key indication that the president is clearly focused on
11:08 am
his own agenda and legacy and not as concerned about what republicans are saying could be a huge embarrassment for the party. >> he just stayed away on the golf course, but not setting foot in alabama. all in on the race. roy moore mostly out of sight as we mentioned. the run up to the special election. he emerged for a rare interview where he denied sexually assaulting women when they were teenagers including one when she was 14. how does he explain the accusations? he blames a left wing experience driven by anti-religious fervor. >> they are attacked me in that area. defamation has been around for a long time and that's what this is. they have done this and it's inconceivable to think somebody would wait 40 years because they
11:09 am
were embarrassed or ashamed of something and then less than 30 days before the general election come out and make allegations and appear on a political advertisement and they waited 40 years not to be embarrassed. >> the man on the other end of that interview has been covering politics for more than 20 years and thinks for being here. are you publicly supporting roy moore? >> no, i'm not publicly supporting moore and i'm not publicly supporting jones. i know both men for a number of years. we don't support political candidates, but we respect our guests. >> when roy said he doesn't know
11:10 am
these women and never molested the women and when he questions why they came out, is that explanation going to be enough for the voters? >> i think it's going to go the same as we have been seeing. there are people that believe roy moore and 30% that are going to turn out no matter what. others will hold their nose and vote for moore. plenty r going to sit home. some republicans will vote for jones. this is alabama and this is a red state while doug jones is a nice guy, if you had a different democrat, you might be seeing a different result, but doug jones never thought he stood a chance to win against roy moore. >> nationally you had who were out and whether it's the questioning of 9-11 or the sandy
11:11 am
hook shooting because we were not living up to the law of god and homosexuality should be illegal and muslims should not be allowed to serve in congress. does that matter to the voters of alabama? >> again, i think they matter to most of us who vote in alabama. we are not the idiots we are betrayed to be by the media or the left or the right. what happens is we don't want a south carolinian telling us what to do or d.c. elite. it's resistant to outside interference. it's a very unfortunate choice of words. roy moore has always been a polarizing figure. 30 years ago when he had the 10 commandments, he was polarizing
11:12 am
then and only gotten more so. this is the debate that we should be having and not about roy moore, but the way men treat women in this country and how we treat minorities. we can't have that debate with mr. jones because we can't get roy moore to debate. >> let me ask you about the outsider position. steve bannon is the consummate outsider. why does what he says matter to the voters? he doesn't want outsiders and why is he showing up only with steve bannon? >> i don't pretend to speak for the moore campaign and neither would i. steve bannon is the ultimate outsider. steve bannon is not going move the needle just like president trump barely moved the needle when he came down here for luther strange. this is an alabama race. i covered politics for a long,
11:13 am
long time and i looked at other states and alabama is unique. the people are proud and they are going to make up their own minds. that's where we are. it doesn't matter that bannon or president trump comes down here. >> that's interesting what you said about bannon and trump. roy moore's political strategist said this on abc about president trump's campaigning for roy moore and making a robo call as well. >> this is donald trump on trial in alabama if. the people of alabama vote for this liberal democrat, doug jones, they are voting against the president they put in office at the highest level. it's important for donald trump and if they can beat him, they can beat his agenda. >> that's the position of the roy moore camp. what will the impact of president trump be in this race? >> i think it doesn't hurt. it helps because it's a deeply red state. what i'm saying is in contrast
11:14 am
to mr. young is that it will move the needle some and give some republicans covered to vote for a man they didn't want to see in office in the first place and it will give his supporters even more pervor to get out and vote and they will show up. this is about numbers at this point. the moore campaign's internals are showing 7 to 8-point leads over doug jones who knows what's real. this is a tough election. >> in the final stretch here, we have richard, the senator who represented alabama since 86 saying he didn't vote for roy moore. the largest newspaper saying do not consider the r and the d next to them. think about what it means for alabama. what will shift this election in the final 48 hours? >> i don't know. i think it's baked in already to think that al.com is going to
11:15 am
influence anybody in the state is about like thinking our sight is going to influence anyone. people are going to make up their own mind. they are not going to listen to us. richard shelby has done a great job for our state and he won't change the vast majority of people's minds. we don't listen to many people. >> we are listening to you. who wins? >> moore. by probably a climb margin. it's just the nature of the beast. it is a red state. let's go back to the fact that if we had a really exciting democratic candidate, let's say like a walt maddox or anthony daniels from huntsville or dario melg in from selma, this would be a very different race. doug jones is anotheration white

11:40 am
united states senate, next year around this country his face is going to be an attack ad used by democrats against republican opponents. just in the same way here in alabama, every republican candidate tries, they will be using roy moore and donald trump. the democrats will be in other races throughout this country to tip the balance of the senate and congress next year. will this be the difference, if roy moore wins is this the gift that keeps on giving. >> as they detain the seat, people have seen that with president trump and the republicans some ways are doing already. in the short-term, the republicans can survive.
