i'm dave briggs. >> it's wednesday, i'm christine romans. november 14th, 5:00 a.m. in the east. let's begin with the white house, imminent shakeup there. a stunning, unprecedented move by melania trump. the first lady calling for the removal of deputy national security adviser mira ricardel. and president trump said he is ready to fire her. she clashed with mrs. trump during a recent trip to africa. listen to what she told abc news during that trip. >> has he had people that you didn't trust working for him? >> yes. >> did you let him know? >> i let him know. >> what did he do? >> with some people, they don't work there anymore. >> sources tell us ricardel has also butted heads with defense secretary jim mattis and chief of staff john kelly in receipt weeks. so far no official word from the white house on her status. more now from senior white house correspondent pamela brown.

>> reporter: a stunning string of events here at the white house surrounding deputy national security adviser mira ricardel. earlier today, melania trump, the first lady, issued a statement. here's what the statement said, "it is the position of the office of the first lady that ricardel no longer deserves the honor of serving in the white house." the statement came out around the same time that ricardel was at the white house attending a ceremony with president trump. so immediately white house officials began scrambling in the west wing. they were caught offguard, according to sources, that the statement was even going to be released. there had been an ongoing feud behind the scenes between staffers for the first lady and mira ricardel surrounding a trip to africa. there was a dispute over a plane seat and other issues. the fact that this has spilled into public view is extraordinary. in terms of her future, that's unclear. a source telling my colleague, jeff zeleny, that the president has made the decision to fire

her. yet, throughout the day, she was still in her office, according to white house officials who couldn't give a clear answer on what her future holds. we have reached out to ricardel, and she has not responded for comment. all of this raises the question of what will be next for john bolton, the national security adviser, who brought ricardel on board to the nfc. back to you. >> thank you. other senior white house members employed in the next few hours or days. no one feels secure with the exception of ivanka trump and jared kushner. the president is expected to ask for the resignation of homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen in the coming days. >> and cnn learned he is discussing potential replacements for chief of staff john kelly despite announcing kelly would remain on the job until 2020. in fact, the vice president's chief of staff, nick ayers, has told two friends he is in the running for the position. ayers has grown close to the president and key members of the administration including the

president's daughter and son-in-law. to california. breaking news. 50 lives lost to the california wildfires, and the threat widens that hour. 48 of those fatalities have occurred in northern california where six more victims of the camp fire were found on tuesday. officials are compiling a list of the missing. they're reluctant to say how many people that might be. a new wildfire is burning east of los angeles county in san bernardino county. it's being called the sierra fire. it's approximately 20 acres in size right now, but the high, dry winds are fanning the flames. no evacuations ordered yet at this time. in southern california, as well, the death toll from the woolsey fire stands at two with more than 400 structures destroyed, another 57,000 considered to be in danger. the department of health and human services declaring a public health emergency in california. cnn's scott mclean has more.

>> reporter: there are thousands of firefighters on the front lines trying to stop this fire from spreading. for many in malibu it doesn't get much worse. case in point, we're standing on what was the home of thomas hirsch. he grew up here, his family lived here. when we think of malibu, we often think of the rich and famous. that is not the case for this family. his parents bought the house in 1965 for just $39,000. and they're 94 and 97 years old. so they've accumulated a lifetime worth of things. today thomas was trying to find anything of value that he could salvage. he found a sterling silverware set that had been melted into a blob. he actually just found it right over here. despite the destruction and despite his parents' age, he says he wants to rebuild. >> we're survivors. what we build will come back, take whatever insurance money they came back. clean it up and make it nicer than it was before. i told my dad, and he said,

"tom, you can't make it nicer than it was." >> reporter: conditions are prime for flames to spread quickly or fires to start. as for rain in the forecast, that might be in two weeks maybe. whenever firefighters are able to finally stamp out this fire, it will be with no help from mother nature. dave, christine? >> entire landscapes reduced to ash. thanks. more than 13 million people, 13 million people in california under red flag warnings. want to get straight to meteorologist pedram javaheri. >> good morning. yet another day where we're watching carefully to see how things play out. extreme concern for fire weather behavior includes los angeles county down toward san diego county where humidities will struggle to get above 5%. we know the winds will be gusty at times. weaker than yesterday at least. take a look, containment to the north for the camp fire up to

35%. officials saying november 30th, that's the target date for containment, and fully containment across the region. to the south, we're up to 40% containment. uncertain as far as when conditions will be good enough to put the fire out in its entirety, at least contain it in its entirety. the forecast for this afternoon yet again, 35 to 50 miles per hour. tell you what, that is plenty strong here to cause the fires to continue spreading into new areas. and unfortunately, that's going to be the case at least through today. by tomorrow afternoon into, say, friday, we begin to see winds die down, becoming breezy which is pretty seasonal for this time of year. again, expecting some numbers to improve there as we go in toward friday and saturday. guys? >> thank you. cnn has learned president trump's legal team could submit answers to questions posed by special counsel robert mueller any day now. a source said the president met again with his lawyers monday. they are nearing completion of written answers to mueller's questions.

those questions said to focus on russia conclusions and not obstruction of justice. still unresolved, whether mr. trump will sit down for an interview with the special counsel. cnn has reported that mueller's team has begun writing its final report. later this morning, matthew whitaker will speak publicly for the first time since president trump appointed him acting attorney general. he'll be appearing at a justice department summit in his home state of iowa. at the same time, the state of the art maryland arguing in court that the president bypassed the constitution and illegally appointed whitaker. the state asking a federal judge to replace him with deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. senate judiciary committee chairman chuck grassley downplaying concerns raised by democrats that whitaker might interfere in the special counsel's investigation. >> the president said that he wasn't going to do that. so doesn't matter what whitaker

thinks. the president said it isn't going to be done. >> officials saying the president is in no rush to nominate a permanent replacement for ousted attorney general jeff sessions and that whitaker appears poised to remain in the position for weeks if not months. at a white house event today, president trump's expected to announce his support for new criminal justice reform legislation. the bill is backed by his son-in-law and senior advisor jared kushner along with a bipartisan group of senators. proponents made some changes to the bill to gain support of law enforcement groups. changes like stiffer sentencing guidelines for fentanyl-related crimes and expanding the definition of a serious violent crime. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell has pledged to bring the bill to the floor if he has the 60 votes needed. the question is wherther enough department will support the compromise or will hold out for a more ambitious overhaul. this is the final day for

election officials to count the ballots from three statewide races. bill nelson's campaign filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming that the deadlines are arbitrary and impose a severe burden on the right to vote. >> they will need a lot more time to get the voting done in palm delaware beach county. voting machines are overheating and malfunctioning. officials will have to start over with the recount of nearly 200,000 early ballots. in broward county, embattled supervisor brenda snipes is suggesting she may step down after all the criticism and controversy. >> i've not made any decisions. whatever i do, i will contemplate it very carefully and make what i think is the correct decision for me. >> miami-dade and broward county insist they will meet tomorrow's recount deadline. house democrats leading a rebellion against nancy pelosi say they're confident they have enough commitments to block her from reclaiming the speaker's gavel. they have been gathering

signatures from new and returning members in a letter calling for new democratic leadership. according to congressman seth molton, a leader of the anti-pelosi group, they may have already enough signatures to prevent her from being elected. pelosi, for her part, telling cnn she's 100% confident she will be the next speaker. that should be fascinating dynamic in the weeks ahead. a cold case cracked in ohio. who police arrested in the killing of eight family members. ♪ dad: oh, hey guys!

breaking news. a military training plane crashing in laughlin air force base in del rio, texas. according to officials there, one pilot was killed, another

has been transported to a local hospital. a t-38 talon went down at the base at 7:40 p.m. last night. we are monitoring that situation. we'll bring you updates throughout the morning. a husband and wife and their two adult sons charged with murdering a family of eight in ohio in 2016. the victims 16 to 44. they were shot to death at four crime scenes in the small town of piketon. at one scene, police found a 4-day-old baby lying next to his murdered mother. that child and two others survived the killings. four members of the wagner family carefully studied the habit and routines of their victims for months before committing the massacre. the motive appears to involve custody of a child. more than 200 cases of the polio-like ill notness -- illness under investigation by the centers for disease control. there are 90 confirmed cases,

bear -- crude oil crashed into a bear market last week. saudi arabia announced plans to cut shipments by 500 barrels per day. that would theoretically support prices, right. but president trump is lobbying the kingdom and opec to keep output flowing. the president tweeted monday, quote, hopefully saudi arabia and opec will not be cutting oil production. oil prices should be much lower based on supply. much of the concern here surrounds sanctions imposed on iran. the trump administration vowed to very out iran's -- zero out iran's oil experts but decided to allow countries like china and india, big importers, to keep buying oil from iran. ahead, the nfl deciding to pull the rams-chiefs game out of mexico city. andy scholes has more in the "bleacher report." >> tell me about the melania trump staff announcement and how just unusual that is and how that takes the post midterm job insecurity to a whole new level. >> well it seems like pretty much everybody at the white house works under the assumption that they could be gone at any day, history they could spend six months, a year expecting to be fired, a la jeff sessions, and just kind of go on their job. it's clearly a strange work environment. and add to that what i don't understand about this melania trump story is that if there is one person on earth who you would think would be able to get somebody fired at the white house without making a big deal out of it, it would be melania trump. she could talk to them at dinner assuming they're having dinner, talking to each other, she could say, donald -- she can call him donald -- would you please fire this person? it doesn't make any sense why

she was all people would have to issue a press release in order to get somebody fired and still not have that person fired apparently by the end of the day. that's incredible. >> it begs a lot of questions there. i mean, without getting into separate bedrooms or whatnot, yeah, why would you issue a public statement? nancy reagan famously feuded with president reagan's staff. don regan, the chief of staff. you never saw public statements from her or any of the first ladies in recent past that were very influential in terms of staffing. but we'll see -- how important is it -- we mentioned the james jared kushner and ivanka trump several times in these first few stories. how influential are they in things moving forward in this white house? >> well, you said it already. i think they're probably the only two people who do have really good job security at the white house. ivanka's last name is trump. that was the concern with them coming in. they play at a different level, i think, than other staffers.

clearly it seems like they're having, you know, the desire to have more influence over staffering decisions as they rub -- staffing decisions as they rub up against people. >> the "new york times" wrote, president trump's moving toward major shuffles in his cabinet and west wing staff as member of the family working to leave a mark on personnel decisions after a bruising midterm election cycle. several familiar with the discussion said on tuesday make their mark on personnel decisions -- you make a good point, zach. what about on policy? >> yeah. so both ivanka and jared were supposed to have the sort of moderating influence on trump. ivanka in particular. there was talk, you know, during the paris climate deal that maybe she would moderate trump on that or, you know, during several other things. but their influence on policy has been, i guess, a little less overt. you haven't noticed it quite as much as trump has retreated into his nationalist corner. that's not really the policy angle of a aired and ivanka who

-- jared and ivanka who, you know, steve bannon called them the democrats in the white house. so a sort of resurgence of them. one wonder if that would have any effect at all on trump's policy which has gone in a completely different direction. >> want to get to the florida recount which is ongoing. thursday deadline. and the president is weighing in. marco rubio is weighing in. and of course, governor scott, the senate candidate, is weighing in. but rubio's tweet really raised a few eyebrows. i love sports analogies, guilty of them -- of just about every day here. but here's rubio's. imagine if nfl team wastrayaling 24-22 -- was trailing 24-22, the three-point kick to win. after the game lawyers for the winning team get an order to have rules changed so that last-second field goals are only one point. what do you make of that sports analogy, and why when florida is going to go governor scott's way in all likelihood, why the president, why rubio, why scott undermining faith in our

institutions, in our elections? >> and that's exactly what they're doing. if you're crying fraud for an election that you're winning, as trump also did with the 2016 election which he won when he said there were millions of illegal votes, it sort of makes you wonder, you know, what the -- what do you accomplish by doing that. especially when you're going to win it. it doesn't make a lot of sense. you know, tortured sport analogies are one thing. but this is -- it's not a game. this is american democracy. imagine your vote not counting because of a technicality, because of a bunch of republican and democratic lawyers. probably more concerning, i think, than the poor folks who are watching this drag on longer than they would like. >> yeah. he's a football fan. but i think wide right on that attempt. zach wolf, thank you, my friend. good to see you. >> thanks. breaking news this morning. 50 lives already lost in the california wildfires. the threat appears to be widening this hour. 48 of those fatalities have occurred in northern california where six more victims of the

a husband and wife and their two adult sons charged with murdering a family of eight in ohio in 2016. the eight victims ranging from 16 to 44 were found shot to death at four crime scenes in the small town of piketon. at one scene, police found a four-day-old baby lying next to his murdered mother. that child and two other survived the killings. police say four members of the wagner family carefully studied the habits and routines of their victims for months before committing the massacre. the motive appears to involve custody of a child. cnn has filed a lawsuit
