germany. >> i'm christine romans. >> i'm laura jarrett. monday, march 16th. 5 a.m. in the east. a new reality is setting in. americans are thinking twice about being in crowded places because of coronavirus. this is unknown territory we're in with no end in sight and so like times square in new york, the country is shutting down. the cdc recommends canceling all events with 50 or more people across the united states for eight weeks. the white house point person on coronavirus, vice president mike pence says new guidelines on curfews and social distancing will come out later today. >> all of this reaching into everyday life beyond work. religious services, birthday parties, gym, mass transit, restaurants, spring break and schools. nearly 2/3 of public school students. new york city adding to the list until at least april 20th. >> we're dealing with a lot of unknowns and a lot of challenges and we understand how difficult

it will be to achieve that goal. i have been very honest about the fact that there is a real possibility that by closing our schools now we may not have the opportunity to reopen them in this full school year. >> concerns have been growing that not a lot of people were heeding avoiding big crowds. governors of washington, illinois, ohio and massachusetts have ordered bars, restaurants and wineries all closed in app effort to slow the spread of the virus. mayors of major cities imposing similar questions. >> i would like to see a dramatic diminution we see in res straupts and bars. whatever it takes to do that, that's what i'd like to see. the virus is not a mathematical formula. there are going to be people who

are young who wind up getting seriously ill. >> in some cities you can get takeout or delivery. members of the white house coronavirus task force are divided over whether further steps are necessary, like federal restrictions on domestic travel or some kind of a national lockdown. the president tried to address concerns last night. >> relax. we're doing great. it all will pass. this is a very contagious virus. it's incredible, but it's something we have tremendous control over. >> tremendous control, the president says, even as the cases mount and the death toll continues. minutes later dr. fauci continues. >> the worst is, yes, ahead for us. it is how we respond to that challenge that's going to determine what the ultimate end point is going to be. >> dr. fauci also indicated he would support a national lockdown to stop the spread of the virus and so called flatten the curve.

that's a strategy behind all of the cancellations and closures we're seeing nationwide. it's about a socially conscious effort to reduce the burden on the health care system, which could be swamped pi a sudden surge in coronavirus cases. health care groups are already raising concerns about supply shortages during the pandemic. the federal reserve slashed rates to near zero to support the economy during the pandemic. president trump has repeatedly attacked the fed. sunday he said the move is great for the country. >> it makes me very happy. i want to con fwrat two late the federal reserve. >> the fed will no longer meet later this week. it had a meeting for the 18th. the emergency rate cut failed to calm investors. just the opposite, futures dropping 5% overnight hitting limit down, meaning it can't fall any further. in asia, the declines for the markets, by the time they closed, european shares are

down. the european economy, global economy grinding to a halt on purpose. something that could throw the u.s. into a recession. goldman sachs downgraded the u.s. growth forecast 0%. no growth for the first quarter and a 5% contraction for the second quarter. united airlines is cutting the flights to 50% and american airlines cutting by 75%. nike, urban outfitters and more retailers are shutting their doors temporarily and stressed their online stores would stay open. disney is shutting all the stores tomorrow and hotels on friday. there is plenty of food in the u.s. walmart is shortening hours at all of its stores until further notice. the shorter hours will help employees restock shelves overnight and clean the stores. publix and stop and shop have also changed their hours. the senate is expected to take up a coronavirus aid bill that passed in the house early

saturday morning. the measure provides two weeks of paid sick leave and up to three months of paid family and medical leave for workers affected by the virus. we'll expand federal funding to support health care systems in hard-hit communities. the bill does have exemptions for businesses with 500 employees or more. companies with fewer than 50 employees can apply for a reduction. the compromise was necessary to have something rather than nothing but it's certainly not what vice president pence or speaker nancy pelosi is touting. chaos, a mad house is how people described the airports as they returned to the u.s. from over seas. scores of people were packed into overcrowded lines waiting up to 5 hours for kroifs screenings. the close quarters is exactly the opposite of the social distancing being preached by health officials. all the chaos at airports

stem from 26 countries. students coming in from poland said they faced long lines and mass confusion. >> so if i'm an american and i don't get out of here by midnight, i'm just stuck here? how does that work? that doesn't make any sense. if there's a process for me getting out after that 12 a.m. deadline, that's fine, but there's no process communicated. there's no idea what we were supposed to have done if we had not gotten out. no information what so ever. >> in chicago at o'hare, one of the 13 places doing the enhanced screening. >> we did make the necessary adjustments at 12 of the funneling airports. at chicago they were not marred quick enough. we are glad to see certain airports and certain airlines, step up, partner with us and help address this unprecedented

sort of connection. there are extremely emotional connections. one week after the extraordinary lockdown, the psychological toll that it's taking on a population that understands why it's necessary. you see them cuing up with the social distancing outside of the supermarkets. really respecting what they've been told because they understand that it is crucial that this outbreak be brought under control. clearly that is not the case. we're watching the numbers very carefully. they continue to rise extremely fast putting under strain the country's public health systela which is trying to treat people. it spikes fast and in clusters. that is an extraordinary toll for any health system to bear. hence, the extraordinary lockdown. the fear, the lesson for neighboring countries and possibly the united states. once the outbreak hits and you take these kind of measures, you are in for the long haul. it takes some time for the

welcome back. another nba player has tested positive for coronavirus. the third confirmed case in the league. carolyn mannau has more. >> the detroit pistons say one of the players on their roster tested positive. the player was not identified by the time. he has since been isolated since wednesday and under the care of medical staff. the team said it's working with public health officials to monitor the situation. while we don't know how the virus was contracted, the pistons played the jazz back on march 7th in detroit and days later donovan mitchell and gobert did test positive. the new york yankees are confirming a minor league player is positive for coronavirus. this is the first nobody case to impact the baseball world. the nba's first coronavirus patient gobert says he is getting better and he hopes others will avoid the mistakes

sunday easter masses where people can go and pray. instead, the pope will be celebrating that mass. it will be live streamed to facebook but there will be no gathering. yesterday the pope walking through the streets of rome to pray for an end to this outbreak, to the end -- for an end of this epidemic. for the time being for the national members at least, laura, doesn't show any sign of being brought under control. there is one glimmer of hope from the very north of the country, one of the early localities that was shut down and everyone is looking to that to see whether it will be replicated nationwide now that everyone is locked down. >> it's amazing to see the streets completely bare. thanks so much. a touching show of gratitude in spain. people under lockdown applauding from their windows for health care providers helping others

during the pandemic. officials have announced tighter restrictions. al goodman is live in madrid. >> a tweet from a doctor at a hospital in northern spain a short while ago with a sign reading, we heard you. thanking those people who are applauding the doctors. now the number of daze cases in spain is more than 7,700. just from the start of the weekend, that's almost double. the prime minister worries this could go to more than 10,000. this is the first weekday of the state of emergency that was announced at the start of the weekend. there were dense crowds on some of the commuter trains. going to work is one of the permitted activities you can do to leave your home. the authorities are concerned about the dense crowds. the civil guard, that's a police force, tweeting out video of that. we'll have to see if the authorities are going to do something about these crowds coming in on the trains. that's the commuter trains.

where al was there in spain, we know there are plans to send some testing kits as well as medical supplies, and even to the united states while the government hero figuresly isn't doing it. we're hearing jack ma has planned to send 5 million facemasks. it shows that china has this under control. however, in the same breath wuhan health officials where all of this started at the epicenter are stressing that it is still severe there. in fact, there are concerns that human-to-human community transmission as they call it is still happening. they are restricting people from going outside. they're asking folks to avoid doing that and they're saying it could be something that they have to monitor and continue in the weeks and months to come. hubei province, what we've seen, laura, is the easing of restrictions or mention of

venues. as of this morning there were 250 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country. there are no confirmed deaths but it was just a couple of days ago the number is rising. there's a possibility that coronavirus could do what the politicians couldn't. they've had more than a year of political deadlock going back to christmas eve 2018. two main parties, netanyahu and benny ganz's party have talked about an emergency government but have not gotten together because of differences. now as they face the coronavirus, it's very possible that an emergency -- that an emergency government is possible. we'll see how it goes. it's much easier said than done. >> oren lieberman for us. germany is taking drastic action to contain the spread of

coronavirus and forcing border controls to the north, west, and south. as you can see here, we have massive traffic jams here on the german/polish border. i want to take you with me. you can see how the professionals here, this is the polish army. you have two guys in hazmat suits taking everybody's temperature who's trying to go across the border. essentially this is something by the way you see in a lot of e o european countries as well. between germany and poland and germany. you have trucks like you can see here. they're still allowed to go through and get cargo traffic to keep going. every truck driver has to get his temperature taken. every car driver who wants to go across has to have their temperature taken. polish people can go across and we've seen a bunch of germans turned back. trucks have to wait a long time. even as the european countries

are saying they want to minimize the economic impact, it does have a massive impact because goods just move so slowly. you can see right here, border control going on with them taking the temperature of everyone in the car checking everyone and then they also make people fill out health forms as well to see if they have temperatures or anything else. if there are people who have temperatures, they actually get waived out and then they have to go into isolation. so one of the things i have to point out is about a day ago you would not have noticed that there was a border between poland and germany of the all of the borders had been taken down. this is how quickly they have wrapped things up. traffic moving slowly, goods moving slowly and the movement of people moving slowly. you can see how deep the impact is. >> it gives you such an appreciation of why the goods take so long to get across the
