you are live in the cnn newsroom, and we begin with the loss of the nba great and activist. bill russell has died at the age of 88, and in the remarkable career of the nba, he took the celtics to the championship and winning the final two as the coach. he also had the incredible legacy off of the court calling out injustices. and magic johnson said he was my idol and i looked up to him on and off of the court. he was dominant winning 11 nba championships and off of the court, he paved the way for guys like me, and michael jordan released this statement, bill russell was a pioneer as a

champion, as the activist and paved the way for every black player who came into the league after him, and including me. the world has lost a legend and my condolences to the family and may he rest in peace. this is from the boston celtics organization, bill is a champion unlike any other, and bill's dna is woven throughout the celtics organization with relentless pursuit, and from the individual glory to the commitment of social justice and civil rights on and off of the court. andy shoals is taking a look at bill russell's life and career. >> i took basic skills and egotistically speaking, i think they had the best command of all of the skills in basketball as a package of anyone who has ever played. >> reporter: the champion of champions, bill russell played

the best of anybody in nba history, and he had one thing on his mind -- winning. >> one thing i loved to do was to be back on defense by myself and have a three-on-one coming to me, and i loved that. because over half of the time i could stop it. i brought defense to a level where it was as important or more important than offense. but my defense was part of the offense. >> reporter: the 12-time all-star for the boston celtics revolutionized the game with the shot-blocking ability, but he put greater value on the victories than the individual numbers. >> if i am really going to be a great team player, i have to be willing to disappear sometime, and be out there without you knowing that i am out there. >> reporter: russell was not always a force on the court, and he took the only scholarship that he was offered to the university of san francisco. in the span of one year, he won a ncaa championship, olympic goal medal and nba title, and he

credits much of his success in life to his parents. >> the first thing i remember is that my mother and father loved me. she said, you must always be willing to fight for yourself. never be a victim. that is the way vii have conducd my life is that i have avoided as much as possible being a victim. >> reporter: russell is a private person who wanted nothing to do with stirring trouble, but with the racial tension, trouble was all around him, whether he liked it or not, and he used his fame as a backer of the civil rights movement. >> i contributed a great deal to the game, and the game contributed as much to my life as i did or maybe a little more. i came here and i lived and i died, and this is what happened [ laughter ] i had a good time [ laughter ] >> and the nba commissioner adam silver has put out a statement

honoring bill russell. he was the greatest champion in all of sports, and he had the qualitys of the inclusion, and it is stamped into the dna of our league. and also from barack obama who honored russell with the presidential medal of freedom, and as tall as bill russell stood, his legacy is rising higher as a person, and bill knew what it took to lead on and off of the court, and he is the greatest champion on and off of the court, and he was a civil rights trail blazer standing with dr. king and muhammad ali, and his activism never stopped him, and i learned so much about the way he played, coach and lived his life. and now, joining us by phone is bob costas, and bob, it is hard to say much more than that,

because he towered over professional sports. >> yes, he is the greatest winner in the history of american team sports which is not necessarily the same thing as the greatest player, but he played 13 nba season, and the celtics won the championship 11 time, and he was part of the american olympic team, and his team won back-to-back ncaa championships at the university of san francisco, and no one can match that, and statistically he can't match michael jordan or lebron or the contemporary wilt cha chamberlain or kareem abdul-jabbar, but certainly, nobody can match him, because he was the first head coach or manager in professional team sports in america when red auerbach stepped aside as the coach of the celtics, he named bill the player/coach of the team, and this is several years before frank robinson became the

manager in cleveland. as your other correspondents have mentioned, bill was part of the first wave, that first post-jackie robinson wave of activist athletes, and maybe you recall this picture, jim, and it is quite famous when mohammad ali had the title stripped from him in the 1960s, there is a summit of prominent black athlete, and you will see ali sitting there in the middle with the young kareem abdul-jabbar and maybe lou alcindor then, and jim brown is alongside him, and bill russell, and arthur ashe is not in the picture, but he is part of it, and tommy carlos, and someone made the point a few moments ago, that when those athletes stepped out, and made statements, there was great peril. it cost them in terms of their careers, and it cost them in terms of the potential violence

and vandalism, and it is much difference than someone putting out a tweet in a social media world. they truly were trail blazers. if i may say so, i got a text a short while ago from jim brown. he said that bill was more than a friend. over five decades of our relationship, he was my brother. he had a brilliant mind and unique humor and infectious laugh. one should be so grateful to have one friend in life like bill russell, and that is what jim brown considered to be the greatest running back in history to think of him, and so just as a sidenote if you ever listen to bill russell, and he had that cackling laugh, and when something was genuinely funny, and i said, you know, bill, nobody enjoys their material

better than you do. and he would say something that he thought was funny, and he would just crack up, and that is part of his personality, and he would crack up. >> you are absolutely right. and they were so heroic, and a part of the professional athletes in thatte t era that changed the world, and one thing that people would forget that russell experienced such racism that even in boston, he decided to have his jersey retired away from fans, and to think back on that, it is incredible what he did go through in life. it was just a remarkable life well lived. >> yeah, one would like to believe even then the vast majority of the fans were appreciative and respectable, but there is an element that certainly was not. his home was vandalize and one thing that is true of bill

russell and anybody who has a universal view of justice and humanity, and he took the people as they came as individuals, and so his teammates be they black or white, that is a real brotherhood. there waskconnection between cousy and russell and havlicek and bill russell and casey jones and bill russell and a bond between red auerbach and bill russell to the point that when they were both stopped being active in the game, they wrote a book, and a jewish guy who was from the east coast, and a black guy who became his star from the west coast, and the book was about their shared experiences and how much they had in common which is ultimately the goal as we struggle through still as we struggle through these issues is of race in the country, the idea that we can see each other ultimately as individuals and appreciate one another if it is

deserved as individuals. >> and he famously boycotted an exhibition game in the '60s and led mississippi's first integrated basketball camp, and became the league's first black coach, and all of that culminating with him receiving the first presidential medal of honor, and reading tweets from michael jordan and magic johnson and he paved the way. >> he was among those who paved the way no question about it. something else that may seem trivial in light of his role in society, but as a player, he had one of the great rivalries with wilt chamberlain, and wilt had all of the statistical records and his team only won two championships and bill's won 11, but they were actually very close friends. i was lucky enough to interview them together once just a couple of years before wilt's untimely death of 1963 in the late 1990s,

and their affection -- death at age 63 in the late 1990s and they were giants both figur figuratively and literally, and nobody could have understood each other and they were giants in the history of sports. >> and bob, you mentioned your interactions with bill russell, and your sense of the man? >> well s, he demanded respect d you had to win his respect. he came to you with an open mind, but he did not suffer fools. he was his own man, and he had to be, because that is the way he grew up. so my sense of him is that he lived an epic american life and that his significance as a

player, even if he never spoke up about another issue puts him in the pantheon of great american athletes, but when you consider the totality of the life along with the athletic achievements, it is going to resonate for a long, long time. >> what a remarkable life and example for the players who came after it, and bill russell has died at the age of 88. bob costas, thank you so much. we appreciate it. >> thank you, jim. and now on the cnn with the breaking news we are remembering another african-american this time from the world of entertainment, and if you are a trekkie fan, you will remember her from the original cast of "star trek" and original cast and her mate george takei

statement by a resident of mariopol. >> well, i think it is because it is difficult to ferret it out, and it is the kind of campaign that russia has been waging in ukraine. it is violated in ukraine, and trying to engage in the war of annexation, and the method by which they are doing it is going back to the war and before, and bombing civilian location, and destroying them, and it is not even indiscriminate killing, but

the white house, and for the security council and say that even though i know that nancy pelosi is a tough lady and she did not get to where she got to by rolling over, but i would have hoped some coordination to say, do it on our term, and at a timing of our choice, and not, you know, as part of the accidental trip that has been taken possibly as nancy pelosi's last trip as house speaker. >> and fareed, you have spoken out how the supreme court has become so political in recent months, and i am curious what you thought about this remark from justice alito about the overturning of roe v. wade. >> we had the honor of this term of writing i think only the supreme court decision in the history of that institution that

has been lambasted by a whole string of foreign leaders. one of these was former prime minister boris johnson. but he paid the price [ laughter ] what really wounded me was when the duke of sussex addressed the united nation, and seemed to compare the decision whose name may not be spokewen the rush attack on ukraine. >> fareed, you know, it sounds like justice alito is just needling the critics here making light of a serious situation here in the u.s., and people are justifiably outraged by what is going on here in the supreme court right now. >> it is much worse than that, jim, because it is damaging the court's legitimacy. and one of the things that has kept the court's legitimacy over time has been a sense of dignity

and majesty and the justices are doing what they are doing for serious constitutional reasons, and they don't pay attention to the chitter chatter, and the decision, and that is why cameras are not allowed in the court, and why else are nine people allowed to make decisions that affect 540 million people's lives, and why else? because they behave themselves, and they behave in accordance with the dignity and the majesty of the court. and what a leader did behaving like a cheap, like a commentator, and not a particularly good one at that, was frankly disgusting, and it was the most undignified supreme

court justice that i have seen in my lifetime, and i don't think that any of the predecessors would have done it. it is scandalous, and there is not a disciplining procedure, but if john roberts wants to fulfill the role of chief justice, he should call justice alito in and saying why this damage is not just alito who looks like an idiot, but it is damaging the court, and makes it look less dignified and less cerebral in this country that is in extraordinary power. >> right. i don't think that founders intended for a supreme court justices to take the vegas act on the road which is what the justice sounded like there. fareed zakaria, i appreciate it. more rain is expected in kentucky, where they certainly don't need it. we will go therere next for a le look next in the n newsroom.
